For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
This suit has a lot of things that I typically don't like — the beige “mushroom” color, the drawstring pants, the exceedingly “athleisure” feel to it (it's a suit! let it be a suit). BUT… something about this suit is calling to me.
For once I actually like that super light brown/beige color — huh. I'd wear it with neutrals like black, white, ivory, and navy, and for some reason I'm seeing it with a few deep emerald accents like shoes or a necklace.

Looks like Jane from Tarzan but in a boardroom.

That sounds like a directive for a photo shoot “Give me Jane from Tarzan, but in a boardroom”

My two levels up manager created and is hiring for a new role that would report directly to her adjacent to my current team. I’ve helped a little in the subject area and it’s really interesting to me. I’ve considered applying but the role is looking for 15 years experience while I have 7. Would you reach out to her or to the recruiter for the position or not at all? I’m leaning towards the recruiter because I know her fairly well and I think she would be able to give me an idea of if I would stack up versus the external applicants. I worry that if I go to my boss and it’s not a good fit she’ll think I’m looking when I’m not.
Anonymous
Reach out to her. You know her! Don’t be weird.
Anon
Go to her. Say you saw the position and while you love your current role, the new position is something you’re interested in for a next step in your career. You’d like to get her thoughts on if you’re competitive for the role. If not yet, then what are some things you can develop over the next year or two so you’re ready when it opens again.
It doesn’t mean you’re looking to leave the company, it means you’d like to grow in your current department. Most managers will love the conversation and if she wasn’t considering you for different roles, it puts you on her radar.
Anonymous
+1 to approaching the manager, not the recruiter. I had a similar conversation recently with an internal opening I was underqualified for but wanted to explore. I phrased as “while I am very happy in current role, the idea of working on X appeals to me” where X was relevant to my educational background and not a muscle I am able to flex in my current role.
Anonymous
Have an informal conversation with your boss. It’s more likely to appear that you are job-hunting if you go through HR without talking to your boss first, and it will be super weird and awkward.
No Face
I would talk directly to the manager. Even if you don’t get this job, it would be good for her to know that you are interested in that area.

Reach out to two levels up boss and tell her the same thing you wrote

A few weeks ago, I asked for Labor Day weekend travel recs close to CT. Just wanted to say thank you to the poster who recommended the Shawangunk Mountains. The Labyrinth Trail day hike at Mohonk was exactly what I was looking for! Labor Day was the bright spot in a really rough summer for me, thanks to your recommendation!
(And to the poster who recommended the Finger Lakes, they’re next on my list!)

Yay, that was me! So glad you had a great time!

Going off the comments about being “kind but not nice” earlier, I wanted to add that I heard recently (and agree) that it’s often good to be “friendly, but not friends”. If I see my racist, conspiracy theorist, anti-vax, misogynist uncle on the street, I’ll say hello and ask after the kids, but I won’t invite him to events or be personal friends with him. I like this principle because it allows you to be kind, but doesn’t ask you to accept immoral behavior or spend a lot of time with it. I’m applying this to a lot of people in my life, including jerks, old boyfriends, coworkers with poor boundary issues, etc., and it’s helped me feel better as a woman who has been socialized to “be friends with everyone” against my better judgment. Thought I’d pass it along.
Anon
This is a great idea – especially for dealing with less than pleasant family and coworkers.

I’m the one who wrote “kind but not nice” – so glad you find it helpful! Really liking the “friendly but not friends” thing.

I had a BR suit in this color (I considered it taupe) and it was actually super versatile. I liked that I could pair a variety of shell colors with it since it was such a neutral. But I don’t like this particular version, it just looks sloppy at best.
Anon
I’m trying to figure out how sloppy it really is vs how much is just bad styling
Anonymous
It has a visible drawstring at the waist. It is very sloppy. It is “F YOU, I wanted to WFH forever but you made be put on a suit so this is what you get” sloppy.
Anon
And that’s a bad thing because? (kidding)
Anon
If you’re going to spend $750 on an outfit, you can find ones that are just as comfortable and, while relaxed, are not sloppy.
frijoles
it looks like cheap poly boucle my aunt would wear
Anon
The pants have an elastic, tie waist like sweatpants. It is definitely not a suit to wear to work.
Anonymous
Yeah. I am Anon at 3:46 and I will say this particular outfit (with the drawstring tucked in or replaced with something that is not an extra-long shoelace) might have a place, it is just not the non-artsy (or maybe tech) workplace. For me, I might find it appealing for pleasure or solo work travel where I can change before any interactive event. Or I might wear it for a Zoom event from home because it looks roomy and comfortable and warm but from the chest up it just looks like a relaxed blazer and I wouldn’t be scared to stand up on screen and have people briefly see what I am wearing on the bottom. It is actually not terribly far off from an outfit I use for just these purposes — grey wool pinstripe pants with an elastic waistband plus a coordinating jacket from Brooks Brothers plus a neat tee or sweater.

Ughhhh where is my rich husband

IDK but I hope he has a single brother!

I want the rich part, not the husband. Please let me win the lotto.

You know those Hollywood marriages where they live in different houses but still go on dates and go to red carpet events together and all that? I want that
Anon
YES! Some level of companionship – but with all my space. Great compromise.

When my kids were little I fantasized about living in a duplex with my husband in one unit and me in the other, and the kids could run back and forth.
I still would have slept with him from time to time, but I wouldn’t have shared a bathroom with him.
Anon
My husband and I have separate bedrooms and bathrooms and it works really well for us. We do sleepovers on occasion but most nights we’re separate. I need my space, even moreso since March 2020 since we’re now together all day during the week too.
Anon
HAHA my friend just said that to me yesterday. She was like “arrrrgh, where is my rich husband?” And since I know she has done very well for herself, I said, “honey, you ARE the rich husband,” she said, “you’re right!” and we moved on.

This is like a sweatsuit with lapels.

It’s the Swuit from New Girl.

Yes! Hope Nick and Winston get a cut!

I am so confused. A post about power dresses, followed by whatever THIS is? While I would welcome a less formal way of dressing for work, I am not on board with any of these weird hybrid pieces. My workwear honestly hasn’t changed that much.
Anon
It is weird, but at the same time I’m eager to transition to the weird clothes that are in movies/tv set in the future. Star Trek uniforms look like they were designed to be comfy.

If I want stretchy, might as well go all the way to St John.

Agreed. Everyone keeps talking about the new era, but I’m either WFH, in which case it’s leggings and a zoom friendly top, or I’m at the office, wearing my clothes from 2019.

What’s your favorite date you’ve been on?
Not because of who it was with, or because of the occasion (anniversary etc), but what were the actual activities of your favorite dates that you’ve been on?
Anonymous
I have a couple:
–couples massage and a private soak, then went to dinner at a new restaurant in town, and then ended the evening with live music and drinks.
–hiking early in the morning and had breakfast and champagne and watched the sunrise.
–bowling, dinner and drinks from the snack bar, out for ice cream while strolling around the town after
–any live outdoor concert with snacks and drinks is always one of my favorite things to do.
So much of this can’t happen now with COVID so we have mostly been doing puzzles, take out, and movies at home. We still go hiking often and also tried canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding this year which were both a lot of fun!

Honestly, just going to a bar or pub. I like sitting side by side at the bar, chatting. The favorite ones are the ones where we together as a unity end up talking to other random guests about random things.
I love that dynamic, it’s such a great way to see if he plays well with others, can indulge my love of silly conversation with people I’ll never see again and be on “my side” or discuss random themes with intelligence and grace.
If he’ll keep his own and contribute positively while we talk to the random people (whether they are the gay couple living next door, fire fighters on holiday or tattooed metal rockers), there’s a very good chance I’m taking him home.

Went on a day trip to a petting zoo about 45 minutes away. It was with my husband after we were married, and it was super nice to have some time in the car, then an activity that involved animals (we held an albino baby kangaroo! did not see that one coming) and then got some food before heading home. Other fun dates we enjoyed were all zoos, a wildlife park with a small train you could ride and see the animals from, and an aquarium. A bonus from these visits are the overheard one liners from children that are just so funny and random.
We also have fun at the Lautner Museaum in St. Augustine and the Ripley’s Beleive it or Not Museum. Oh, and the Spy Museum in Wa DC was great.

Second date: guided trail ride on horses. Hadn’t been on a horse since I was 10. It was fun and original. It went downhill from there and he ghosted me three months later, but still gets credit for that one awesome date.
Monte
City conservatory/botanical garden. He brought some beers that we drank in thermos and we wandered around and then sat and talked. This was a first date and the dude himself wound up being a bust for me, but the date itself was beautiful and warm and lush feeling in the middle of winter.
Evening hours at the Art Institute, and then a beer/coffee downstairs where we could talk about the art or read in companionable silence (this was of course further on in the relationship). Bonus points for the live music also playing. I love art but cannot do multiple hours of wandering without wanting to sit and digest.

When I was in high school in the very early 80s (so styles were still what we more or less think of as the late 70s) my mom, who was OBVIOUSLY very uncool had this friend who was in her twenties who I thought was the coolest. She was a clothes horse and gave me hand-me-downs from time to time.
One of the hand me downs was a mauve blazer a lot like this one, cut from a nubby almost-terrycloth almost-boucle stretch knit. When I tell you I was THE coolest kid wearing my stretchy mauve blazer to marching band and chem class… yeah, I was delusional. It wasn’t cool then either.

This color washes me out completely, but I really like the cut of the blazer. Pretty much optimal blazer for me. No opinion on the pants, they would probably make me look stumpy.
