For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. Wow, a beautiful navy suit from Boss — on sale for 40% off. Yes please! That's a dress beneath it, made of mixed materials for a “blouse and skirt” type look. Now, that high neckline is exactly the kind of thing I usually avoid (see my top style tips for busty women), but I would make an exception here because this is such a gorgeous outfit. I'd probably be sure to wear my 18″ set of pearls, or even a simple gold necklace (I just got this one and like it) to visually lower the neckline a little bit to the more flattering mid-clavicle region. The jacket (Boss ‘Julea1' Stretch Wool Suit Jacket) is $357 (was $595), and the dress (Boss ‘Darlana' Mixed Media Sheath Dress) is $345 (was $575). Here's a more affordable option — a dark navy jacket + dress (with detail at the waist) in seasonless wool, available in misses, petite, woman, and woman petite sizes. (L-6)Sales of note for 8.30.24

Luggage
What is the best time of year to buy luggage? I need a new carry-on as my old carry-on is now too big for some airlines. Tumi is having their semi-annual sale right now, but I’m wondering if I should tough it out until the end of the year. Does anyone have any experience with their sales? Recommendations on other brands are welcome!

Yay Kat, this BOSS Suit is absoluteley BEAUTIFUL! I can NOT beleive that I never came across this suit before! And it is NOT to expensive either! I am showing this suit TODAY to the manageing partner after I finish posteing! Thank’s again!!!! DOUBEL YAY!
As for the OP, TUMI is very good stuff. I found that I got great prices RIGHT after the summer, when I needed new luggage for my trip to California. I got 10% off at Nordstrom’s b/c Rosa knows a guy who work’s there, and I have all of that luggage today stored at Dad’s house on LI, b/c I live in NYC and do NOT like to have that stuff cloggeing my closet’s. Good luck to you if you get TUMI! YAY!!!
Bonnie
Rather than wait for a sale, check out the selection at your local Marshalls, TJ Maxx or Ross. I often see Tumi bags there at a discount. I’ve been happy with my Victorinox carry-on.

I just bought a two-suitcase Samsonite set (one carry-on size, one larger) at Costco for $129. We’ll see how they hold up (travelling with them for the first time this weekend), but for $129 plus Costco’s great return policy, I am willing to take the risk!
tesyaa
It’s a great set and has held up very well.

I love my Tumi hand bag, but I prefer Briggs and Riley for luggage. In general, I find the design of B&R much more thoughtful, especially the garment bag styles.
MJ
+1 for Briggs & Riley. Plus their complete, best in the business, lifetime, no-questions-asked warranty is the bees knees.
Lilly
When I had to replace luggage rather suddenly, I lucked into a Victorinox bag at a substantial discount on 6pm.com. Inventory there is not a constant thing, even as to brands, so it’s worth watching and waiting if you have time. Or you might get lucky like I did.

Any fellow apple shapes? What style of dress do you feel works best on your body? I’ve gained weight and I’m feeling really awkward in my clothes right now. Time to shop.
I have broad shoulders, big boobs, I carry my weight in my stomach, and I have a pretty small butt in comparison, so I think I’m a classic apple shape?

I hate being on hold, and I hate hold music. Pop music from 3 years ago is a terrible option, I’d prefer some non-descript jazz.
Anon
I agree! It feels like musak is used to pacify you while you wait. The one time I enjoyed listening to hold music was during a call to the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund.
Nati
Generally, me too. But sometimes the hold music is horrible in certain senses but also SO CATCHY in others. I’m thinking more the tunes without lyrics for this.
Has anyone ever heard the This American Life episode about the man who loved a piece of hold music so much he tracked down the creator so that he could have a copy of it to play around the house? I found it so funny and can sort of see where he’s coming from on the odd occasion that I find myself grooving to objectively bad but in a good way hold music…
Julia
Ha! This reminded me of a completely different This American Life episode about a TAL staffer who was lost in the customer service cycle of a phone company for months. Ira Glass commented that, after hearing the hold music so many times, for such extended periods of time, they had determined it was intentionally a song that has no beginning and no end so as to blur the passage of time. Eventually, by making a public case on the show, they got in touch with an executive who resolved the situation and then, at the end of the call, said he was going to do “something special” for the customer/TAL staffer. Speculating about what that “something special” might be, the customer pondered whether it might be a CD of the company’s hold music. I think this was an old episode that was recently rebroadcast.

There’s also a Reply All episode about this.

The Practitioner Priority line at the IRS used to (when I was in law school 2006-2008) had two songs – Waltz of the Flowers (or Dance of the Reeds – I always get those mixed up) by Tchaikovsky and Eine Klein Nachtmusik by Mozart.
I thought they should have gone more American – say Copeland?
I think they’ve now switched over the musak-y jazz.
Shopaholic
I’ve been trying to place an order with the Limited for 2 days and keep getting error messages. So frustrating! Their customer service just keeps telling me to try again. Has anyone had any luck?
just need to rant.
UPS Advice
Hi ladies — I desperately need some customer service advice. I recently placed an order with Reiss, and returned most of the merchandise via UPS. Several weeks later, I had not received any return confirmation, so called them to follow up. They indicated that they had not received the package.
Unfortunately, I do not have the tracking number. I usually photograph the shipping label before taking my packages to UPS but in this case my husband took this one to UPS on my behalf and we both forgot to do so. I have literally never had a problem with a lost UPS package in my life, and I can’t believe it happened to the one package whose tracking number I can’t find.
I’m sick over this — it’s over $1000 of merchandise. Any advice on what I could possibly do to track down this package?
Gail the Goldfish
Is it a shipping label Reiss provided? If so, I would imagine they have the number.
UPS Advice
Yes, it is, actually. I spoke to them on the phone and they said they didn’t have the number. But I should press them on that issue. Thanks.
lost academic
Wow, not good.
I don’t have any idea if this could work, but I would imagine someone in customer service MIGHT be able to figure out the package based on the shipping location, day shipped, method of payment (especially if you used a credit card and know which one). If it was a preprinted return label from Reiss, I would think SOME information about it would be on file and they could track it.
Jen
In all seriousness, is your husband certain he dropped off the right box? It’s not still sitting in the trunk of the car or anything, right? I’m imagining a scenario in which there was another box in the trunk that he accidentally thought was the right one…
Coach Laura
I can’t imagine that Reiss can’t check by order number or customer name to get the number.
If it’s a local UPS Store, they may keep separate records of packages shipped from that location by shipper, destination and/or date. Do you/he know the date it was dropped off? Mine gives me a shipping confirmation slip even on pre-paids (and I’ve gotten the same one out-of-state where my college student was) did hubby put it in the glove compartment of his car or in his briefcase?
can't stop eating
Not sure if anyone is still reading, but I could use some support.
I got home after a long and stressful day today and just could not stop eating. I was literally eating spoonfuls of peanut butter with brown sugar and chocolate chips because I was too lazy to bake and I just wanted to taste something sweet.
I don’t usually do this, and I feel so embarrassed and gross. I just needed to get it out there. Please tell me that I’m not alone.
Carrots
I’ve totally done this. I would say for tonight, drink so water and find a way to move a little bit, whether it’s a walk or a few silly dance moves to your favorite music, and then a take shower and curl in bed with a book. And know you can make tomorrow a better day. Don’t think too hard about everything you just ate, because that’ll just keep making you feel bad.
Hopefully that helps!

I don’t know what this says about me, but read that, thought “omg that sounds delicious” and went and made some for myself. And it was.
In my defense, I’m pregnant… but if I’m being honest, I don’t think that had much to do with it.
Anon
You are SO not alone in this.
I am sorry for your stressful day. +1 to what Carrots said.
Bonnie
We’ve all been there; it’s nothing to be ashamed of. My dinner tonight was speculos (sp?) ice cream, cheese and wine. Just don’t make it an everyday thing. :-)
cbackson
I don’t like chocolate chips, but girl, I have so done the spoonful of peanut butter dipped in brown sugar thing.
I think when you’ve had a miserable day it is natural just to try to find something to give you a few moments of a pleasant experience.

Hi all — looking to get started on building a work wardrobe.
I’m finishing up my first year of law school and will be working at a firm this summer. I have 2 basic suits (not fancy at all, Calvin Klein) and that’s really about it. Though I worked professionally prior to law school, most of it is definitely too casual for firm standards.
I’m not opposed to spending a decent chunk of cash this summer if it means that I will have clothes that will hold up for awhile, pair well with a variety of things, etc.
Does anyone have recommendations where to start? Brands? Stores? Websites?
What are the “must have” staples?
If it matters, I’m in my late 20s (‘old’ for law school), 5’6″ and 120 lbs with a fairly straight shape but a short torso and slightly longer, broader lower half.

If I were you, I would not spend much on the wardrobe right now since you don’t know where you’ll end up after law school. I’d add one more suit with 3 or 4 pieces (jacket, skirt, dress, pants). Macy’s and Lord and Taylor both sell separates. Add a couple shirts and wait to buy anything more until you see how people dress at the firm.

Thank you!

The Limited has good suits and great sales. I’d check there, too.

I ended up at a business casual (tending towards business) law firm during my 2L summer and returned after graduation. During the first week of my 2L summer, most of the summer associates wore a suit daily. I had 2 suits and felt the need to go buy ~4 more. I think I have worn 3 of those suits about twice each…
I would definitely give it a couple of weeks if you can to get a sense for how you need to – and want to – dress.

I’m in moderation for posting a link to Corporette. Think about that. Have your mind blown.

Thanks to everyone! I’ll cool the jets for the time being.
