superfine-suiting For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. I swear I've posted this before, yet I can't find it anywhere — I'm in love with this light gray superfine suit from Classiques Entier. I've posted before about my love for light gray pants for work — so much more versatile than white! — but the matching jacket, dress, and (hello!) the sale all make this a great option. The jacket (One-Button Wool Suiting Jacket) is now $166 (was $278),  and the pants (Superfine Wool Trousers) are $106 (were $178); both are available in regular and petite. I just confirmed with Customer Service that this dress (Superfine Wool V-Neck Sheath Dress) is a matching piece; it's now marked down to $148 down (was $248). (L-5)

  1. Ladies! Any suggestions for a present for my mom’s birthday? She is in her early 60s, retired, and really doesn’t need anything; her kitchen stuff is all worn out but she would never say which pieces need to be replaced. Maybe a gift certificate for books or something? I really am not inspired for anything and have to get something in the next 2 days!

    1. Massage, mani-pedi, possibly going to see her if you leave out of town? I feel like most moms really just want to spend time with their kids. Also I would take good guesses about what is worn out. Spatulas, cookie sheets, frying pans, Tupperware? Those are things that always seem to get worn out. I would also consider replacing anything that is plastic that has BPA/ generally older as newer plastics supposedly won’t kill us all with cancer like older ones. That way even if you guessed wrong and it isn’t worn out, it still has a reason to be replaced.

    2. Do you visit her regularly? Have you seen her kitchen stuff? Just pick something that is obviously worn out and buy her a shiny/newer/fancier version.

Or an experience gift like tickets to a play or museum or sporting event (if she’s single, it’s nice if you go with her). Or, you know, wine and chocolate…

    3. If she likes to cook, a Le Creuset dutch oven is something that she may love yet not buy for herself.

    4. Diana, I think you’re a fellow native Mainer– If your mom is still in Maine, and ever gets down to the Old Port maybe a gift certificate to Le Roux Kitchen? Then she could choose something for her kitchen.

      1. This is a good idea! Maybe I will try for Rooster Bros in Ellsworth, closer to them.

    5. I got my mom a cooking class at Sur La Table for Mother’s Day and she was thrilled. When you take a class there you also get a discount for the day, and I ended up replacing a bunch of my old kitchen tools.

    6. Fancy soaps? I’ve gotten my mom cute lavender soap and lotion sold by Etsy and I’m waiting for my next gift-giving occasion to buy Sudz by Studz, home made fancy soaps www sudsbystuds dot com. The etsy shops I have used have been called treefortnaturals and also cricketcovesoapco.

  2. Ancestry.com gift membership, sign up for a Sur La Table cooking class to do together, or a museum membership?

  3. Snack etiquette- I’ve moved to a large firm and ice discovered that all the assistants have snack trays/bottles. Questions: can I just assume snacks are up for grabs? Do I have to say thank you if the assistant is busy with someone else? Do I have to buy them snacks to replenish the snack containers with?

    1. Um, ask them what the policy is? Try: “oh, these look delicious? are these up for grabs?”

Or ask another associate. This seems highly specific to your office.

      1. I’ve always struggled with this too (assuming you mean a candy jar on someone’s desk). It feels weird just to walk up and take some without saying anything. Anyway, I finally realized that people do that because they want people to take it and to visit, so I just operate under that assumption. I have bought new snacks to replenish before, but I don’t think most people do.

      1. No. I’m glad you can though and that’s why you have time to comment on a blog instead of spending time with your many friends.

        1. I’m sure she’s at work, and that’s why she’s not hanging out with her friends. We’re all at work. What a pointlessly rude comment you just made.

Come on, asking that question here- a group of people who do not work at her firm-, instead of asking the assistants who are the keepers of the snacks (and presumably, humans who can speak), is silly.

          1. Lol. I find it hilarious that probably the same jerk posted twice with different names. Keep it classy corporette

          2. I have friends at work. I met them while asking if I could have the snacks on their desk.

          3. And yet you still have time to post, just like us. Turns out you can have friends and post on this site at the same time.

    2. At my firm, Lynn is responsibel for stocking the pantry and for putting out snack’s. Everyone in my firm is abel to eat snack’s b/c the firm pays for it. On OCCASION, we run low, so Lynn goe’s out and repleanishe’s the snack’s and the manageing partner has Frank put money in her NEXT paycheck to cover the snack’s plus $15 for cabfare, even if it just across the street to the Dwayne Reed. She also has to go uptown to Whole Food’s b/c I protested and asked for healther snack’s. For that she get’s $20 extra. I told the manageing partner that I walk by the Whole Food’s on my way to work and could get the snack’s and I would NOT even ask for the $20, but he said that is a Secretearial Function and that I would NOT be seen schlepping snack’s to work as a Partner in this Bootique firm. YAY, but Lynn is slow about getting MY snack’s b/c she does NOT like them and prefer’s the chocolate’s and other stuff from Dwayne Reed’s. FOOEY on LYNN!

But as a Partner, I have decided, now that Crumb’s is reopened, to bring in muffin’s EVERY month, right after the monthley billing’s go out. That is a BIG event at the firm. Once the manageing partner signs the letters for our bill’s, and Lynn send’s them out, we all celleabrate and eat Crumb’s! YAY!!!!

    3. “Hi Jane, M&M’s are my favorite, can I have some?”
Subsequently, “Hey Jane, how’s it going? Can I..?” (gesture at snacks) (take some)

Usually people have those out to facilitate inter-human communication in the office, so it’s rude to just take them without acknowledging the person in some way. Also rude to eat lots and lots without offering to replenish in some way. If they are busy talking with someone I wouldn’t take any.

  4. I have this dress and it’s very flattering. It even manages to hide my less than flat stomach. Looks great with a cardigan. I’m curious about how the jacket would look with the dress too.

    1. Good review! I have a less than flat stomach and am always looking for ways to hide it. Thank you.

  5. I have this suit. The jacket looks good with the dress. It washes me out a little, so I like to pair it with a brighter scarf or statement necklace. My least favorite thing is the prominent seams on the dress. I actually got the petite pants, even though I am not petite. The petite length turned out to be great for flats (I’m 5’6″).

    1. Thanks. I really like the material too and want to get the matching jacket and pants.

      1. Unfortunately no skirt. I would have bought all 4 pieces if the made a skirt one. IIRC, the pants are unlined.

        1. Yes, but the material is very nice and not scratchy so I know for me it wouldn’t be an issue.

    2. Any advice on how it fits? I see they cut up to a 16, but is this a line I should be sizing up in? I’m in that weird 14-16 zone.
