Express is having some pretty serious sales this weekend — markdowns up to 60% off, PLUS an additional 30% off. I like the look of this slub sweater for the weekend — it looks comfy, flattering, and on trend. It was $49, was then marked to $29, and comes down to $20.99 once in your cart. Alright wise Hive. With the news looking more and more like we’re going to have a shutdown, any tips on drastically reducing your expenses? Our household income is going to be cut in half; we’re lucky that I cover about 95% of our bills, but I am still worried about basically living paycheck to paycheck, since normally DH paycheck is our savings.
No advice but commiseration. Husband’s job is essential so he gets the extra bonus of working unpaid until backpay is approved. JOY. His office is funded for 10 days post shut-down but they can’t guarantee pay since the payroll people could be deemed non-essential. Our congress is worse than kindergarteners fighting over toys in the sandbox. I loved the line on SNL “if you can’t beat them, kick the ball into the woods.” That about sums it up.
If your financial situation becomes particularly dire, I’d suggest prioritizing your bills and seeking forbearance from those you can like student loans. Pay the minimum on anything else like a credit card. If your husband is essential and guaranteed back pay then you could consider floating some expenses on a credit card too. I would be less comfortable doing that if he is non-essential. While non-essential has still historically been paid, they don’t have to be.
shoot i hit report instead of reply. he is non-essential and a contractor, so I’m basically operating under the assumption that their will be no paycheck. good point about prioritizing. i will have to see what things we can cut. i’m so anti-debt I hadn’t thought about floating on a CC. not a bad option if it comes to that
Just to be clear, essential workers are not guaranteed pay either but I think they are more likely to get their retro-pay. We have been on both sides of that coin and I know it can be really demoralizing for an agency to be told it is “non-essential” too. There is no winner in this game.
I’m cutting everything but essentials. If his paycheck goes to savings, can you tap the savings? Credit unions are offering loans, but I haven’t looked into that yet.
