If you admire the politics and causes of Toms Shoe Company, but aren't a big fan of the shoes, never fear: they're now selling wristlets, bags, and more. (Their Marketplace, established 2013, gives other “social entrepreneurs” a platform to sell their goods.) I like this colorful cotton wristlet from JOYN — it seems like a perfect for a place to keep lunch money and sandwich reward cards. Apparently, every product you purchase is helping JOYN provide employment, educational opportunities, and medical care to artisans in the Himalayas — not bad for $24. Ladies I need your advice. It’s my parents’ 30th anniversary this April and I’m trying to figure out how to mark this occasion. They are not party people but both my sister and I will be home that weekend so we’re planning on taking them for a fancy dinner.
I would love to send them on a vacation but there is no way that will be financially feasible. Any suggestions? I know what I would buy them separately but I was hoping to get them essentially a joint gift to mark this milestone.
TIA!
Do your parents drink wine? My husband and I always like to have a bottle from the year we were married on our anniversary.
Would they be into any big-ticket electronic items – iPad, new computer, etc? Or tickets to an expensive concert or play that they would both love?
What about a really nice photo book with family photos through the years (bonus points if you have a photo from their wedding to include)? My parents would love that. The high quality, layflat books are fairly expensive (around $100-$200 for a 50-70 page book), but they look professional. I’ve used Adoramapix in the past and had good experiences (look out for sales, although they might not have one in the next month).
We did this for my parents’ anniversary and they were so touched! We used Pinhole Press.
We just did this too. They loved it. We did photos from each of the past 30 years and the included a little description of what was going on in the world that year — both personally (got married, had kids, kids graduated, had their own kids, etc) and generally (price of milk/gas, who was president, Berlin walls comes down, Sox win the world series, etc)
What about a weekend trip somewhere nearby? Maybe split the cost with your sibling?
Or, what about some kind of experience gift like dance lessons, art class, wine tasting or cooking lesson? I know I would never get myself something like that but I would probably use it and have fun if someone else got it for me.
Hot air balloon ride, fancy dinner to follow.
For my parents’ 30th, my siblings and I arranged for family pictures to be taken and paid the session fee. It had been a while since the whole family had gotten together. The last pics were from my wedding approximately 3 years prior.
I did this for my mom’s birthday one year and she loved it!
For my parents’ 30th, my sister and I arranged a surprise happy hour gathering for them. We told our parents we wanted to eat at X restuarant “just ’cause.” When we arrived, their closest friends were there waiting. Much more low key than a party and because food and drinks were 50% off, the bill was really reasonable. They had a wonderful time, were home for their 8:30 bedtime, and were very touched.
As someone who just celebrated their 30th anniversary, I must say the best gift we received was my children surreptiously taking all of our old photos and home videos and digitizing them. It was a labor of love, didn’t cost much and was extremely appreciated.
My parents took a vacation for their 30th anniversary and a bunch of relatives bought them gift cards for different restaurants in the vacation town so they could dine out for free on us all week.
I was just searching for my parents 30th anniversary present online but came here for a break and saw your post! All these suggestions are wonderful, but my parents are impossible! I’m really just looking to vent here, hope that’s ok. In going through the checklist here’s what I’m up against:
My parents don’t drink. Can’t buy lotions/perfumes/soaps because my father has an intolerance to scents. Just made them a massive photobook for Xmas. No flowers because the cats eat them. No picture frames because the cats knock them down and break them. No other trinkets/books/ art because they are borderline hoarders and the house is overflowing. No travel/exercise/hobbies because their health doesn’t allow it. No interest in spas, massages, manicures etc. Ugh! Looks like another gift card it is.
My best friend’s mother passed away yesterday. Everyone is in shock and it’s gut-wrenching to hear your loved one’s heart breaking over the phone. I know meal delivery is often a thoughtful way to help- does anyone have suggestions for vendors to use? My friend lives on Wall Street in New York. A co-worker suggested Patsy’s to me, but I don’t believe they deliver to Wall Street. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I don’t know if this would work for you, but my husband’s grandmother just passed away. He was able to attend the services, but because of our young children’s schedules, I was not. I ordered a nice meal from Honey Baked Ham. They do hams, turkeys and various side dishes.
It came while my husband was there, and he said that it was very good, and was a help to his mom who had folks at her house from all over that she needed to feed.
Zabar’s delivers, you can check their “meals to go” on their website, as well as lots of other stuff.
I’d say it really depends on what you want to send. Pretty much everything will deliver in NYC.
Fairway also delivers for $10 anywhere on the island and they have a great selection too. http://www.fairwaymarket.com/store/kips-bay-manhattan-ny/
FWIW, I think this is a really good idea. My church sends out a call for food any time a family has lots of people coming in town for a funeral. It really helps.
I make a point of sending food at these times.
If you’re looking for just a restaurant that will deliver, you can check out Seamless or Grubhub for ideas. (I believe Lombardi’s Pizza would deliver to Wall Street.)
If your friend isn’t originally from NYC, also consider something from her home area. For example, I’m from (but not longer live in) Philly, and when I’m really down, I’ve had people send me soft pretzels. Having something which I can get locally and which is very special to me has really cheered me up (or at least put a temporary smile on my face).
Other NYC delivery ideas: Greenberg’s Bakery (their Black & White cookies are great), Magnolia Bakery, and I would like to second the idea for Zabars. Lox & Bagels is always a great standby.
Maybe Zeytuna? It’s a grocery store/restuarant in the Financial District.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I ordered a selection of meals and snacks that she likes from Zabar’s. She used to bring us Zabar’s from home when we were in college, so hopefully it’s both thoughtful and meaningful.
My husband and I are starting to look at possibly buying a condo & I know nothing about the process except the little bit of jargon I remember from 1L Property class – can someone suggest a book that explains everything? Also one question: Is it normal to use a loan officer your realtor refers you to? It seems a little fishy to me, but I might be totally off-base. For reference, all of our money is in a bank in my home state (where my parents still live) and that bank can’t help us with a mortgage in our current state. So we don’t have any bank where we live, otherwise we would talk to them first about a loan. Thanks in advance.
Where are you buying? Some areas have a whole set of their own specific rules (e.g., NYC). Otherwise you could probably find a lot of resources on line and in your local bookstore.
As for your other question, totally normal but I would also check with some local banks. Just walk into a local bank and see what they say. Also, if you’re not getting pre-approved ahead of time, some buildings have a history of dealing with specific banks so if you’re waiting, you could ask to see if a particular bank services a lot of the mortgages in the building.
Shop rates online with Zillow and Bankrate, and also check any local credit union that you could join for this purpose.
The lender that my realtor referred me to was WAY higher in rates and fees than the others that I spoke to and who were very highly rated.
We used an independent mortgage broker, they are not tied to any bank and can find really good rates.
As far as what to look for – depends on where you are and what kind of condo you are looking at (big, small, etc.).
for contrast – i used my agent’s recommended loan person. it was just easy – they were coordinated and the rates at the time were the same. i don’t think it’s inherently sketchy.
Thanks everyone. Will check out other lenders but not rule out using the realtor’s person.
My mom’s a realtor. She only uses the loan officers that have great rates, great customer service and who make sure the transaction (from a loan perspective) goes seamlessly. It’s not sketchy–she wants to use a responsible lender who will come through–there’s A TON of flaky folks in the real estate industry, and she knows who cuts it, and who doesn’t. That isn’t to say that you couldn’t find an independent broker that’s fine, but…my mom sells dozens of houses per year (and has for decades) and she knows who’ll come through. That’s it. Not sketchy. No kickback.
Good to know, thanks!
I’m currently in the waiting game for a job I really want. They’re allegedly checking references as of Wednesday, but no word since then. I know I need to take my mind off it somehow, but we’re in a really slow period at work and it’s hard! Can anyone recommend some good long articles to read or something? Or otherwise commiserate with me??
It sucks, but hopefully it’s also good!
I’d check out longreads.com
Also, the Pulitzer Prize has a website with a whole archive of past winners and I have read some AMAZING stories there.
I am waiting to see if I’ve been accepted to a dream masters program in a city I really want to move to. It would be a huge life and career change for both me and my SO. I might literally find out any day, so I can commiserate with you! I’ve never been so anxious/excited.
Good luck!! The “any day now” part is the WORST. The job I’m waiting to hear about is a “dream job” (or as close to it as I can imagine) so I totally hear you on the anxiety/excitement.
Thanks for the Pulitzer Prize website tip, AIMS! I’ve heard of longreads before as well and I’ll have to check them both out.
Good luck to you as well!
Hug’s to you. It is NOT easy waiting on a good job. I had a very dificult time lookeing for a job when I got out of law school b/c both of my summer jobs had guy’s that were strange, and one of them was mad b/c he wanted to sleep with me but I was NOT interested in a guy who was 48 year’s old and worked for the goverment. FOOEY!
But don’t worry, you will do OK. I did literaly bump into the manageing partner delivering subpeenee’s and now I am a partner, all b/c of a subpeenee in his building –that we are STILL in–FOOEY — our new lease fell thru b/c the manageing partner did NOT put down a BINDER. Madeline did NOT tell him he needed to so he didnt and now the space is goeing to another firm. We are starteing all over again, this time near here with a few places on 34th and 35th but both kind of DINGIE! DOUBEL FOOEY b/c I want a building that is NOT older then Grandma Leyeh, and these are MUCH older then Grandma Leyeh and Grandma Trudy both. TRIPEL FOOEY!
Anyway, we are just lookeing for now, b/c all of the space is worse then what we have and we are tenant’s here on a MONTH TO MONTH basis, meaneing we can get kicked out if they get another tenant, but not to many peeople want to lease a place with stuffed up toilet’s and toilet’s in the middle of the office that do NOT have any exhauste fan’s so the poopie smell stay’s in the room. FOOEY!
Myrna told me that the South American Guy grope’d her on the escealator goeing up to Grand Central from the Lower Level. It would have been alot worse if it was summer but she had a short DOWN vest on with spandex and the guy got in a pretty good grope she said. FOOEY, b/c she should have stayed behind him on the escealator, not in front goieng up. Once they got to the top, she said WTF is that all about and he said he never had a girl as cute AND smart as Myrna and wanted to have sex back in Queen’s. Myrna said NO WAY was she goieng to have sex with him and NO WAY is that aceptable for a guy to do in the USA. I remember that Gonzalo alway’s wanted to touch me where he should NOT and I saw him one morning with his hand on some woman’s tuchus inside her jean’s as they came out of a dumpy place on Lex. Thank GOD that was not me b/c I am sure they were NOT playeing Yatzee all night and she had a big tuchus.
Myrna still has to see this guy at work, so I hope he does NOT do anything funny to her food when he serve’s her on the cafeteria line. Myrna says she will NOT eat anything he give’s her. That is terible. Is this the way men from South America treat women? If so, FOOEY on those men. FOOEY!
Perfect post. I’m looking for a wallet/wristlet thing that can hold ID cards, cash and one or two smartphones. Either an android or a blackberry. Bright colors preferred. Help!
I saw some pretty leather ones at the knomo shop in the airport recently. Maybe worth a look?
I am on the hunt for something similar because we have a new security policy that requires IDs to be on constant display and I am considering something along these lines: http://www.6pm.com/lodis-accessories-audrey-smart-phone-case-wine
Only fits one phone though. There are other wristlets around but I really want something that will have the ID on the outside so it’s easily accessible.
I have had this for a year and a half. It has held up really well. I’m thinking of getting a Lodis wallet because of how much I like this wristlet.
I found this yesterday in Banana Republic and the reason it caught my attention is because it was big enough to hold my 2 phones, has a card holder and zipper pouch to hold my cash, and the tassle can be removed.
http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=45435&vid=1&pid=949840022
$75 with 30% off… not too bad.
I have a Kate Spade one that I like sizewise but the card pockets are awkward. I think I’m going to get one of those magic wallets so I can keep my cards neatly in it. I feel like they’re constantly on sale at the J. Crew outlet. Has anyone used one before?
This Etsy shop has a bunch: https://www.etsy.com/shop/rockitbot?ref=l2-shopheader-name.
I got one for Christmas.
I’m starting to look around for another job. I am currently inhouse and came to this company via a recommendation from someone who used to work here. I have seen some interesting positions at companies where I have no ties. Any advice on researching things like culture and salary when you do not have an inside source?
FWIW, reviews on glassdoor and similar sites so far seem to be for operational positions, not for the legal department, and often are not for the corporate headquarters.
Thank you for any suggestions.
Don’t bother. If they position sounds interesting, apply. Try and figure out culture and negotiate salary once you have an offer. Assuming you’re covering the basics of checking industry publications/google, there isn’t a great way to really know this stuff and getting caught up on it costs too much time when you could be moving forward with apps.
That makes sense. I’m in a position to be picky about my next move, so I was probably getting ahead of myself. I suppose an interview (if I get one) will be the best place to pick up this type of info anyway. Thanks for the response.
Checking in for my progress report: have submitted EIGHT job applications as of last night and I have at least 4 or 5 more I am working on. Baconpancakes, where’s your update??? ;o)
Eight? That’s impressive! I’m also looking and can’t find any jobs listed that I even qualify for, or if I can, I’ve already applied.
Thanks! Honestly, I’m a little weird, some of these jobs are by no means my ideal position, but I did some of these applications to give my momentum a boost so that I would actually start applications that I care about more. But also, I am trying to switch areas and possibly sectors, so I’m applying for things that go in different directions, to see what happens and who will actually consider me. But I have some idea for each job about how it could lead me to a path that would set me up for a more ideal job down the road. Anyway, just to say that I’m not sure the number should be that impressive ;o)
But I’m keeping a look out for more options. I HAVE to get out of my current situation ;oP
Don’t forget to network! I’ve applied for a lot of jobs but never actually gotten hired except through networking.
I just want to share this delicious, easy, and healthy recipe. It’s the trifecta of perfection.
http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2014/03/kale-and-quinoa-salad-with-ricotta-salata/#more-11559
I am so grateful to the Hive for introducing me to Smitten Kitchen. I am eating her salted caramel brownies now! But will bookmark this kale for more disciplined times.
Good to know! I saw it the other day and thought it looked fantastic. I’ll give it a test run this weekend!
While we’re on the subject of recipes, I made this and it was *insanely* easy and really really good. Highly recommend. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/sesame-seared-tuna/detail.aspx
My dad’s 60th is coming up reasonably quickly, and I’ll be travelling to participate in a big family lunch that my stepmom is throwing for him. Given that there are already two plane tickets in the mix (for me and SO), and my dad has very few real needs that need to be filled by a BDay present, what nice, thoughtful, but not-too-over-the-top presents would the Hive suggest? He doesn’t have hobbies, per se – he’s an antiquing, ebay perusing kind of guy who only invests in quality purchases. He has a good sense of humor, so funny-ish gifts aren’t out of the question, but I was leaning more towards the “nice” end of the present spectrum… any suggestions super welcome!
Alcohol. A nice bottle of whiskey or wine are always nice if he’s a drinker.
If your dad wears cuff-links, the following site may be of interest. They have a large selection of vintage cuff-links , some classic, many quirky, lots of price-points. I’ve had great good luck finding shapes with personal meaning for my gift recipients among the quirkier designs, and the overall buying/ delivery experience has been excellent :

We did something a little different. My Dad lost his mom when he was in his 30s, and it was pretty traumatic for him. we made a largish donation in her memory for him. We aren’t a vocally charitable family (i.e. we all give separately, and my parents do so, but a lot less than me and my brother, and it was never really a highly valued thing in my family). it meant a lot to him.
Super nicely framed photo of you and your siblings and significant others/partners? Maybe from the lunch, but give it to him afterwards?
Fairly new to the hive, but looking for some help. Starting grad school in the fall and I’m looking for a nice bag that I can use to carry my school things around in, but that wouldn’t look out of place if I have to bring it to work or run around town with it before class. I’ll be heading up to my local mall to do some in-person shopping tomorrow and they have some nice stores (Nordstroms and such), but any suggestions would also be helpful.
I’m looking to stay in a reasonable price range ($150 and under) since a) I’ll be piling up more student loans soon and b) I’m still fairly early in my career. Color isn’t really an issue – I’ve purchased some blues and reds from Zappos, but they were just too small or I didn’t think they would be able to handle the textbooks.
Thanks!
Sign up for the Coach Factory Outlet emails – it works kind of like a flash sale site (items are heavily discounted, and gone forever when they run out), and you can get some really amazing deals, especially if you’re open to a variety of colors (for obvious reasons, your standard-issue women’s career bag in black is not as likely to be on sale as the same bag in, say, aqua or something). My Coach bags (mostly gifts, all from either the in-person or online outlet) have worn extremely well, and are sturdy.
this might be a tad over your budget, but I have it in a neutral nude color and I can not tell you how many compliments I’ve received! I absolutely love it.
