Coffee Break: Kylah Pump

Kate Spade just retired some long-running styles that we had featured for years (the Karolina and the Licorice pump) — so I'm intrigued to see this newer, block-heeled, square-toed version getting good buzz over at Bloomingdale's, where it's currently a bestseller and has a rating of 4.8.
Reviewers there note that while it runs a bit big, it's “beyond comfortable” and good for those work events where you're “standing for hours.” Nice.
Bloomie's has neutral colors plus a snakeskin, while Zappos has a wider variety of colors (red, mustard), and Nordstrom (bestill my beating heart!) has a wine-colored option, as well as other colors.
The shoe is $228-$248, available in sizes 5-11. Kylah Square-Toe Pumps

DH had surgery yesterday and his orthopedic surgeon and anesthesiologist were both women! :) So rare and I was really excited to see.
+1
One of our senators was on TV yesterday, and I decided to give my kids a quick civics lesson, explaining that her job was to represent our state in congress and how important that was. Right after that, I realized how nice it was that their impression of “senator” from that lesson involved a woman.
That reminds me of a story from many many years ago when my son was about three. It was Lincoln’s birthday and he and I both had the day off from work and nursery school. I told him who Abraham Lincoln was and added “and he was a lawyer, just like Mommy.” My son screwed up his little face incredulously and scoffed “a MAN lawyer???”
That makes me smile!
My daughter has done the same thing!!! “A *boy* can be a lawyer?!?!” (in reference to my boss).
She still calls pointy toe high heels “lawyer shoes” (and moto jackets “lawyer jackets”).
This is amazing.
I did this as a toddler! Mom was a doctor, and I refused to let the male pediatrician into the room because “I have no clothes on, and he’s not a real doctor because he’s a man.”
This reminds me of the sketch from that HBO comedy show “A Black Lady Sketch Show”. There is a skit where the courtroom is only black women (even judge etc.) and they are shocked and amazed, even take a selfie and make a song. It’s hilarious.
A++ sketch.
I was so excited when both the pilot and copilot on a recent flight were women.
Of course the old dude next to me had to say something about women drivers. HAHAHAsofunny. I selectively didn’t hear him, nor did I hear him for the rest of the flight.
I agree! This is our time, as women, to assert ourself and RRRRRRAAAAWWWRRRR! YAY!
Anyone have advice for someone looking to get involved in Tennis as an adult? For a variety of social reasons, I’d like to learn to play, but the last time I played I was like 10 (I’m 31 now). I’m in DC if it helps. I’m not opposed to doing lessons, but my work schedule is fairly unpredictable, so I worry about committing to too much there.
If you really want to develop into a player with whom other players want to engage in a match, you need to take some lessons. No DC-specific recs since I don’t live there anymore.
Community colleges often have both leagues you can join and classes you can take.
You need to take lessons!
When I lived in DC, I played squash since it was closer to work. But,yes, lessons!
There are lessons at East Potomac Tennis Center. It’s easy to get to from downtown. I wasn’t good and don’t have anything to judge them against, but I had fun.
See if you can go to GW or Georgetown and their fitness centers. There are plenty of college guys looking hard to hit tennis balls around with women like us, and they will generaly chase after all the stray tennis balls to impress us (at least they did when I was at GW). They will also try to hit the ball exactly where we need them to to keep the volleys goeing. So try this and who knows, you may also find a boyfreind in addition to a tennis partner! YAY!!
What is your favorite mocktail? Trying to mix up my routine a bit…
Seedlip grove 42 (4-5 cl) with the juice from half a lime, dash of cucumber bitters and club soda on ice. Very, very nice.
Virgin mule with fancy ginger beer (Tom Henry, Fevertree), half lime on ice.
Virgin Eastern Standard – normal recipe with the green Seedlip (don’t remember the name) instead of gin.
Virgin Basil Smash – same green Seedlip instead of gin.
Classic Shirley Temple, from fancy ginger beer.
Rhubarb, ginger and apple goes really well – so if you want to experiment, apple cider (or apple juice and club soda) with rhubarb syrup, fresh ginger and half lemon on ice.
For those who go for sweet: virgin bellini, with non-alcoholic apple cider instead of prosecco (works with Rossini, Hugo and Mimosas as well).
non-alcoholic spirits, anon 5:01, you’ve expanded my world. so excited.
So glad to bring that forward, I think I first heard about them either here or at askamanager, a couple of years ago? There are more and more products like that, there’s even non-alcoholic rum from another European company. Rum-ish, or something like that is the name, but I’m not sure if that’s sold in the US.
Shrubs! My husband made these while I was pregnant and I just needed an option of something to drink that wasn’t water or my one cup of coffee a day. He would take various kinds of frozen fruit and herb/spice combinations (blueberry and sage, peach and basil, cranberry and ginger) and cook those with sugar (maybe three cups of frozen fruit, half a cup of sugar, and a cup of water?) until the water and sugar had dissolved and the fruit had started to cook down. Then strain this mixture, wait for it to cool slightly, and add about a cup of apple cider vinegar (or to taste). Mix the fruit/vinegar syrup with seltzer and enjoy!
Thank you for recommending these pumps. I have several pairs just like this from Nine West that are a few years old. I’ve hardly worn them, but was worrying they were falling out of fashion. Now I can wear them and know “at least Corporette approves of them”!
Long time lurker first time poster looking for advice. I’m an attorney early on in my career in my late-20s working in state government. I decided to volunteer for my graduate school’s mentor ship program (I was dual degree in law school). Normally I am not one to get involved but I thought it might be a nice opportunity to mentor someone just starting out, as I would have liked to have a similar person when I was in school. However, I was recently matched to a mentee who is older and, based on her LinkedIn, much more experienced than I am professionally. She’s not interested in law school but strictly our graduate program, which is fine. But I’m not sure what I can offer. What should my goal as a mentor be in this situation?
You should probably email the school and let them know that you aren’t a proper match due to your career path. Why are you mentoring graduate school students when you are a practicing lawyer? Unless someone wants to veer their career path into law or your area of government, it’s kind of a time-waster for both parties.
I would first talk with the prospective mentee before declaring to the school that there isn’t a match. There may be something she can learn from you – or that you could learn from each other.
Any recommendations for where to stay in Mexico City? Will be there in December for a long weekend. Trying to do the trip on a budget, so the cheaper the better!
I’ve heard good things about the Red Tree House.
I have nothing bad to say about the Hampton Inn Centro Historico – and at least when we went a couple of years ago, it was a really really good value for using Hilton points, but also plenty affordable in cash as well.
