Coffee Break: Linoto Linen Sheets

I know I just posted about my love of linen sheets a few weeks ago, but the roundups of Black-owned businesses to follow have introduced me to Linoto, and I'm absolutely head over heels for these gorgeous linen sheets.
They're not typically what one might consider budget (a set of full-size sheets is $349; king is $399), but for linen sheets that New York magazine has called “heirloom quality,” these are actually pretty affordable.
The pictured sheets are from their “100% linen” collection, which they note is sourced from “several of the very best Italian and Belgian linen mills,” but do note that they also have a Belgian eco-linen collection (responsibly farmed linen), as well as a much smaller organic linen collection. Nice.

I’m very tempted by these!!
Ah. Good grief look at all those colors!!
I’m so glad that Cat featured these! I’ve been buying Linoto sheets for years, and they are *wonderful*! I also have Eileen Fisher linen sheets from Garnet Hill and Reatoration Hardware’s linen sheets, and Linoto is Just so, so superior. They have a gorgeous hand, get softer with each wash, and feel wonderful on the skin. Linoto’s owner is responsive and really cares about sheets.
How do you know if you’d like sleeping on linen? I have never done it before.
Put it as a goal in your online dating profile, or a requirement: “must have linen sheets.” Bonus, it weeds out the dudes that sleep on bare mattresses.
Married, but I like this idea! Easiest way to try before you buy. (Also… bare mattresses?? Who are those guys?)
I have expensive linen sheets, and I still don’t get it. It’s just not that different. Cotton sheets, ideally very old and soft, are my favorite. I wish I’d saved my money.
I keep trying to convince myself that I love mine because I spent so much money on them but… I just don’t. I definitely prefer a cool, crisp fabric.
Do you get very hot when you sleep? If so, you’ll probably like linen. If you like to sleep in really soft bedding, linen is probably not for you.
I am not a fan of linen and I sleep very hot. I tried it out first by just buying a pillowcase (from Rough Linen which I think is supposed to be a good one). I didn’t love it, and confirmed this when I stayed in a hotel where they had linen sheets. Just not for me. Kind of always feels a bit abrasive and not snuggly enough! But I highly recommend just getting a pillowcase to start and try!
+ 1, I have sensitive skin and the linen feels like sleeping on a loofah.
I love linen because it skims over my skin and always feels cool and dry. I am not sure I actually like things that feel soft though. I don’t like high thread count sheets and dislike mercerized cotton fabric in general.
I went on an expensive linen sheet odyssey a few years ago because I’m a super hot sleeper. I was inspired after staying at a friend’s house and really liking a linen duvet. (Plot twist, I later learned it was from Ikea, so…) I also love really soft old cotton sheets. Linen does feel rough until you’ve washed it a lot, then it feels softer, but still in a slightly different way than cotton. What I like best is using my soft, worn, cotton fitted sheets and using a linen duvet. For some reason lying directly on the linen is less appealing to me than having it as a duvet. I love the look of them and the feel of them when I’m lounging in bed, but still like the softness of high quality cotton, so I’ve split the difference. I’d recommend buying a pillow case to start with. Wash it often and see how the texture changes.
We have had our new puppy for almost 3 weeks. He’s wonderful, things are going great, except for one slight issue. He will not go potty anywhere other than our backyard. So, for instants, he will not go in my parents’ yard or on any other grass. He’s not going in the house! But we do need to get him to go other places. Suggestions?
Our dog was like that as a puppy. We eventually took him on a trip with us. He didn’t go 1 or 2 for the first day and a half. I was so worried. But he eventually just went when he couldn’t hold it any longer and hasn’t had the issue since. He certainly has places and surfaces he prefers but he will now go on command.
Start taking him for walks to do his business, not just letting him go in the backyard. He’ll smell all the peemail from other dogs and get the hint. Walks are key.
Totally stealing Peemail.
+1 for walks, long ones if possible. Our rescue dog refused to go potty anywhere but the backyard for the first few months. Eventually she had to go so badly during a very long walk that she just went, and after that she’s been willing to go potty on walks.
Even beyond this walks are key for a well-adjusted dog (from someone who got a rescue that was perfectly housebroken but had never apparently seen 1) another dog, 2) trash trucks, 3) children, 4) joggers, 5) ladders… and it has taken years to get him comfortable around even some of those).
Does anyone have suggestions for online art shops with a somewhat curated selection rather than a firehose of all kinds of stuff (a la sites like Society 6)? I’m overwhelmed by too many choices.
This post has a bunch of sources.

Where are you located? I like to look at local galleries. Many have their inventory online.
I tried to post a link to a gallery and artist I like in SF. I’m not sure whether I’m moderated or it didn’t go through.
I’m in Philly. That’s a great point, I hadn’t thought of shopping local galleries online!
Two sites that treat the artists fairly are Lifeboat (https://www.lifeboat.community/prints) and Relief Markt (https://reliefmarkt.com/).
Saatchi and Saatchi online.
How often does Pottery Barn run sales? They have a basket I really like to use for a specific purpose, but it’s beyond my budget.

Thanks for the recommendations on vegan ice creams the other day for my college aged daughter who has been experiencing conflict (shunning, actually) with her friend group.
She’s fine, moving on, and really, really enjoying the So Good Salted Caramel Cluster vegan ice cream. I tried a bite. If you didn’t tell me it was vegan, I wouldn’t have known! She wanted me to thank you all, so thanks!
Any other vegan recs, ice cream or not, are very welcome and appreciated.
Thanks for the update. Glad to hear she’s doing well.
Speaking of vegan, I have been obsessed lately with the new vegan “meat” products. Cook’s Illustrated did a taste test of several brands and concluded that Impossible Burger is the best and Beyond Burger is second best (but still quite good). I would tend to agree with that analysis.
Thanks! We tried Beyond Burgers just this week. I had to spice them up a little but I thought they tasted great after grilling.
What lip products are you wearing now? Has anyone found any comfortable but bold colors for staying home (that don’t dry your lips or fade unpleasantly)?
Nars Powermatte! I keep it in my desk and swipe it on for Zoom calls.
nars afterglow balm. love nars
Found out I’m likely not going back to my office for 6+ months (if ever… or at least if ever regularly), so finally going to really set up an at-home office. I have a desk on the way, an extra monitor, and external mouse. What else would you get to have a comfortable at-home office? Any tips and tricks?
A good keyboard and a chair you can sit in all day. I have the first but not the second.
A good chair.
Quality lighting, including task lighting.
A good webcam.
A wireless headset. Gamechanger.
Enough storage. I have piles of stuff on my WFH desk and need to clear off a shelf somewhere so it feels more under control/organized.
Some people swear by a sit/stand desk. I hated my standing desk but if you like it there are cheap ways to make a standing desk work. If so, get a mat to stand on.
If you just want to occasionally stand, I move my laptop to the ironing board for a spell.
An all-in-one printer. Laser or ink-jet, though I have an all-in-one ink-jet as well as a single-function laser. The all-in-one is critical, and the laser-only is handy for printing forms (accountant here).
Everyone else’s tips are good, but I’ll add: a stand for your laptop, to go with your wireless keyboard! It raises the laptop screen up to a good height– better for preventing eye/neck strain, and also puts the screen more in line with a second monitor.
