On Redesigns…

As you can see, we've done a slight redesign to the site, with more changes to come (hopefully soon). What do you think of it so far? What else would you like to see us add? We'd love to hear your thoughts.
I would love to see you show things in the <$75 price-range. I read this site every day, and almost everything, although beautiful, is way out of my price range. So it would be nice to have a section about where to buy similar styles for less.
I agree! I love when magazines have a splurge-steal column. I think that would be a wonderful addition to the blog!
Save an out-of-work graphic designer. Update the masthead.
I’d love to see features on clothes that flatter different body types. I sometimes get frustrated because a lot of the items featured like the pencil skirt/sheath dress are not forgiving unless you have very specific proportions.
Is it just me or is the main change that the ads are bigger/more prominent?
I find this style much less readable, honestly – the ads are definitely bigger and distract me – my eyes keep wandering to the right. I find the main posts – the “meat” of the page – to now be squished in on the left. bring back the old style, please! or at least, give the posts more space!
p.s. all this being said, i do love this blog so i hope the white space/more visually pleasing style comes back….
I agree about the masthead.
Please don’t abandon the pencil skirt/sheath dress ideas. I think they are the most professional looks, but they can feel boring , and having this site helps open my eyes to patterns and textures that I might not otherwise consider for work.
just realized we had the wrong BlogHer ad up there — it was too wide. with that fixed, do you guys still think the 3-column layout is less readable?
Sorry, I don’t like the 3-column layout at all. The ads are taking away from your site.
Sites that are more successful with the multi-column format with ads to the right tend to have darker accent columns to the far left/right that resize based on your screen resolution. This makes them easier on the eye than pages like this that have so much white space.
I’m not much of a fan of the 3 column layout either. It takes the “meat” of the page down to half of the screen.
As for articles/posts I’d like to see, I’d love to see some more about makeup. Not as much how to wear it (though those are helpful), but more on product reviews. Finding makeup that looks professional and will work all day is not an easy task. I would love to see reviews of products that could be good for professional settings.
three columns do seem busy, or cluttered, to me.
i agree — white space is nice: it’s clean and seems smarter to me.
While I don’t disagree about reaching out for other body types, I think you do a good job of matching tons of body types. And pencil skirts and sheath dresses are almost universally flattering when paired with the right accessories.
KLo and kate1, I’m pear shaped with a longer torso, and lament with another friend that the styles available these days are just terrible for our body type. The proportions are just wrong and with a sheath dress, there is really nothing you can do to alter it to make it fit. The pencil also tends to draw your eye to the widest part if you are a pear, which really isn’t something that is all that flattering. Even on tall, size 0 models, the pencil skirt can make the more pear shaped models look chunky.
yeah, the content feels squished now and no longer the focus. but, perhaps we’ll get used to it. also, now i have a scroll bar along the bottom b/c it doesn’t all fit/readjust to my screen.
Is it possible to get the entries tagged (or re-tagged, since I remember seeing tags in the past)? I’d like to be able to search “suits” or “blazers” and so on instead of scrolling down all the time.
Ha ha ha, yes, the masthead has to be redesigned. I really like all the other changes, the type is a lot nicer. Ads don’t bother me.
Masthead redesign is in the works… and we’ll take your comments into consideration about the 3-column layout. We really wanted it to have an “about” slug somewhere more visible than it was before (which was way below the ads) but maybe the trade-off isn’t worth it. And re: tags — yes, every entry is tagged and categorized — I’ll have to figure out how to get those visible again. Very odd.
I liked having the “jump” to comments up with the article’s title rather than following the article. The number of comments is the first think I look for.
I second D about the comments link being up near the title of the post. As there aren’t lots of posts every day (which is fine!), I re-check to see if there has been feedback to a post… handier to have the link next to the title.
Here’s a question for you guys — would you like an Open Thread for the weekend? Maybe to start Friday afternoon or something? I notice it seems to be very popular at Lifehacker and Jezebel. Hmmn, maybe we could piggy-back it with the Weekly Updates — just invite people to use it as an Open Thread. Thoughts?
Provide an option for those commenting on a particular entry to subscribe to the comment thread, receiving notices by email. Your site traffic will increase because people will be reminded to return automatically.
Can you return to a non-serif font? The serif font is harder to read.
I’d also like a better “Archives” section in terms of being able to tag and find certain articles.
Last, when you first started, you’d have more tips on how to be efficient or tools for making life easier. The blog has now morphed into a nearly-completely fashion site (save for a few links on Friday). Bring back the tools that targeted your blog overachieving chicks back! We don’t want all fashion all the time.
You might want to do some market research as well, like a surveymonkey survey to find out things like geography, age, height, profession, income, shopping frequency, avg spend, fave stores, etc. This would be useful information for your advertisers and would help target editorials as well.
all in all, this is a pretty boring looking–but useful–site. Kind of like a lawyer and her wardrobe.
