For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
This suit is a bit wacky, but I like it… if you’re the kind of extremely wealthy woman who wants to let people know, “Yes, I’m a boss, but I’m a FUN boss.” (Which TV characters can we see wearing this suit? Diana from Younger immediately comes to mind, although I’m a season behind…)
I think the blazer alone is a bit more versatile than the pants — wear it with a column of color (black dress, or perhaps a white top and white trousers) or pair it with a matching shade on top (red, pink) and wear it with a solid-colored bottom. Lots of possibilities!
The brand, Off-White, is new to me, but this black-and-white skirt is also lovely.
The blazer is $1,990, and the pants are $935 at Neiman Marcus.
Looking for something more affordable? Theory Outlet has some nice options, and this burgundy Brooks Brothers suit we featured last year is deeply discounted.

Glytone apparently stopped making my favorite serum (the anti-oxidant day serum or something like that). What’s a good replacement? I’m concerned with aging and sun spots. I start with the Skinceuticals CE or whatever so just need something for between that and my SPF.

OMG I really want (a) this suit, (b) someplace to wear it, and (c) the body to pull it off.

I’m in politics and normally get behind the colored suit picks (I joke that I dress in bright colors because I often have to talk about boring topics), but this one’s a bit too much for me. Also, it reminds me of Fruit Stripe gum ?

I had a skirt suit similar to this bought in Loehmann’s in the Bronx around 1990 – 100% wool, and the colorblocking was diagonal and similar but with yellow, red and orange. However, the skirt at least was a solid red. I don’t think I could have pulled off the colorblocked bottom. I used to wear it to synagogue when people wore things like that. I remember that suit fondly but I have no desire to squish myself into tailored clothes ever again.

The only job I can think of where this would work is circus ringmaster.
Although my boss snarkily reminded us all to wear jackets for our Big Zoom Meeting this afternoon and it would be awesome to show up in this just to spite her. Um, yes, we all have been dressing for court for years or decades and know what to wear.
Anon
I believe you when you say your boss was being snarky, but honestly if someone could just tell me exactly what to wear these days, I’d appreciate it. I’ve been the only person in a jacket talking to people in hoodies, and vice versa!!

I want this suit so hard.

Me, too. Maybe in my next life as an heiress who is an Instagram Influencer at a trendy party in Ibiza or some other cool place. And I’ll be drinking a cocktail match.

Has anyone tried ravella’s silk blouses? Are they worth it/do they actually wash well? I’m considering getting a few…
Anonymous
I have one. I love the pattern (from a few years ago). After hanging to dry it definitely needs steaming or ironing.
Anonymous
I need some new blouses / tops to wear to work. My problem is that my current blouses / tops are all meant to be tucked in (generally to suiting separates), so they don’t have the volume to clear my tummy in a flattering way and don’t work with mom jeans OR they are looser and longer to be worn with skinnies, but I’m not wearing jeans this summer b/c it is too humid. I have some higher-rise pants that have higher rises that I can wear with flats and it looks like we’re casual-ish for now (BUT on calls with people in suits, I feel a need to have a more profesh top half).
It’s like mullet dressing and I’m doing it wrong. Blouses that look well untucked pls?
anonymous
Check Macys. I never tuck in tops and I’ve gotten several shirts from there. I think a lot of them are from the Alfani brand.
No Face
I never tuck. Most of my non-thrifted work blouses are from Karen Kane, bought on sale. If you are searching online, crossover, tulip, or asymmetric hems are very flattering and obviously made to be untucked.
MagicUnicorn
Peplum is another silhouette that is definitely meant to wear untucked.

Where can I go to find an appropriate tankini swimsuit for a 13 year old girl who is just developing? The girls’ suits have no nip coverage but all of the womens’ suits are way too big, low-cut/sexy and/or have major molding in the top. Please help!
Anon
Lands End
Cornellian
lands end has lined fronts on their girls suits, I’m not sure if you’re looking for more coverage than that https://www.landsend.com/products/girls-tankini-swimsuit-top/id_352377?attributes=43307,43325,44257,46158,48354

Also, my kids also get their choice of LE rashguards / sun shirts b/c one of them just pretends to put on sunscreen

I also love the rashguards for myself. Like everything in Lands End, I’d say sizing is generous, so maybe order two sizes to try.

Thirding Lands End. Just bought my pre-teen a tankini from there and the top is perfect for her (high-cut and lined). The bottoms are also full-coverage and the swim skirt is a cute option too.

Athleta Girl or Athleta adult xxs.

Wardrobe Oxygen recommended Cupshe the other day based on her 14 year old’s experience. It’s in her Instagram stories if you want more details.
Anon
Athleta Girl?
Anon
I have a 10YO and a 12YO and the 12YO is a tall skinny thing and is out of AG sizes. Full-on Athleta is $$$. She still fits the largest LE kids’ sizes (and the tankini tops have a lining on everything we’ve gotten). The 10YO is 5-1 and she barely fits some AG sizes. My wallet is in pain.
Anon
Does your 13 year old want to wear a tankini? My daughter wanted to wear a string bikini at that age. Which was better than the almost- thong style bottoms that came later, but I really try hard not to buy into Modesty Culture because it is so misogynistic.
At that age, she wanted things from Roxy and Billabong, not Lands End. Just be realistic about this. Your daughter will want to wear what other girls her age are wearing.
Pompom
I vote this ^
But also check out Aerie’s swim, which has alllll sorts of styles that she could mix and match, including some that are longline tanks and others that are triangles, etc. Gives her options.
Anonymous
Aerie quality is horrible and the suits are all skimpy or ride up. My teenager has returned every Aerie suit she’s ordered.
Pompom
I hadn’t heard that on the quality—must have taken a slide since I last bought from there. Thanks!
Anon
I’m not a modesty culture person, but I do appreciate a good rash guard for sun protection and my kids appreciate both not having to do elaborate grooming (the slingshot bottom seems to be back; we are hairy people) and not having to worry about wardrobe malfunctions with more swimming-style suits vs fashion-type bathing suits.
If your kiddo fits into Title 9, I like their blend of sporty and pretty and functional.
Anonymous
My young teen wears the sportier bikini styles from the surf brands with a rashguard over for sun protection. You can filter the search by bottom coverage.
kitten
Yes, I would have found Land’s End to be incredibly dorky and boring at that age (and also at my current age lol). Billabong has really cute ones. L*Space might be good too.
LaurenB
I don’t think it’s Modesty Culture to want a young teenager to be a bit more covered up than string bikini.
Anon
What else would it be?
Anon
Exactly.

If your kid goes to camp at all, check for camp rules for swimsuits. One camp my kids go to mandates one-piece swim-team type suits or a tankini equivalent. [Swim trunks, not speedos for boys, so equal opportunity functional swimwear.] Rashguards are OK (and preferred to avoid sunburn).

Newish Mom
I’m having difficulty accepting my postpartum body. I was rather petite without much effort pre-baby (5’3”/115lbs) with just watching what I eat and no exercise. I’m about 15 months postpartum and I’ve only lost 10 lbs of the 45 I gained during the pregnancy. I.just.want.to.fit.my.old.clothes.
I’m just angry that breast feeding didn’t magically help me drop the weight, angry at the stretch marks on my stomach, angry that my boobs sag now, and angry that my blood work a couple months ago was fine so I can’t point to wonky hormones as the culprit. When I went in for a physical about 2 months ago and cried because of my frustration, and the doctor suggested that I just further cut my calories to 1200-1300 range. I’m just really struggling regarding this new normal.
It’s been hellish waking up at 4:45am to work out before the baby wakes and tracking food for such slow weight loss. I just miss my pre-baby body, and I hate the messaging that my body was sacrifice for the gift of a child— I don’t want to be martyr for parenthood.
Anonymous
Completely understand. It’s a hard adjustment post- pregnancy. You can love your baby deeply but also just want to feel like yourself again.
WW worked for me. I didn’t buy any of their branded products but using their points system helped me relearn to fill up on healthy foods and also regain my sense of portion control. With pregnancy, I had just gotten used to eating what I wanted without paying attention to serving sizes. Tracking water and sleep in the WW app also helped. Sleep was a big one for me. When I don’t sleep enough, I’m starving in the daytime.
Anon
WW has an option to account for nursing moms. It has such an encouraging private social media environment called Connect that I’ve really enjoyed. You can also get a WW live coach to chat with – great, too.
anon
oh man I could have typed this out myself. I also miss my pre-baby body. Drastic calorie dropping really didn’t help me FWIW – I highly recommend the book Healthy As F*ck. It really changed the way I think about diet and exercise and helped me implement sustainable healthy habits that have helped the weight start to slowly come off. It’s not coming off as fast as I’d like but I don’t count calories or macros or anything and am in a much better mental space than I was when I was doing that.
Anon
Ugh don’t love that doctor’s response. If exercise is important to you, do you have a partner who can step up more so you can work out at a time that doesn’t require you to sacrifice precious sleep?
Separately, feeling a lot of anger is one way that post partum depression shows up. If that seems like a possibility, worth exploring therapy / medication for that. Your body wasn’t a sacrifice but maybe can find some peace that this stage isn’t forever but some things are different.
Newish Mom
I do have a very supportive partner, but there are constraints with his work schedule and long commute. He’s out of the house by 5:30 to get on the road, she’s mornings are mine for baby duty.
I realized how much rage I was carrying recently and asked for a psych referral from my primary doctor recently.
Anon
Good for you. Good luck. New parenting is hard, and the reduced community bc of Covid has made it harder.
Anon
Hugs. I want to mention that even though I got back to basically my pre-pregnancy weight within a year with my first child, a lot of my clothes never fit again. My body shape had changed. I had to let go of certain items that were fitted at the hips and/or top. And with ensuing weight swings over the past number of years, some clothes fit even when I gained weight, so weight was not the only determining factor. Sounds like at least you are losing. Is there any way your spouse can arrange their schedule so you have time to exercise at a more convenient (and enjoyable) time?
Anon
Oh yeah, that’s true too. I am no longer a tucker-inner.
Anonymous
3 thoughts:
–Pregnancy permanently changes your hormone levels. This is why age at first pregnancy impacts breast cancer risks. even if yours aren’t officially “wonky,” they are almost certainly different than they used to be.
–Are you still nursing? Some women seem to hold on to extra weight until they wean.
–Buy new clothes today. Life is too short. I could not exercise regularly until my son was 2.5, and didn’t get up the motivation to really diet until he was 5. In the meantime I had clothes that fit. Life is long.
–And yes it sucks!
Senior Attorney
Agree with all of this, especially “buy new clothes that fit.”
And man, I feel for you. It’s been almost 35 years but I still remember looking at my post-partum body in the full length mirror for the first time and thinking “holy cow there is NOTHING about this body that is even remotely familiar to me!”
Newish Mom
I’ve very recently decided to embrace clothes that fit, but I get so frustrated trying to dress my new shape. I spent decades dressing myself as a small pear, and the clothes I gravitate toward cater to that.
So, I’m repeatedly disappointed that clothing I order online look horrible on me and my new shape.
Curious
This feeling (nothing I buy fits) is the WORST. For me that was early 2nd trimester clothes. I don’t want to sound like a shill but Stitch Fix really helped me and made me feel like I could find clothes that worked. They might be worth a try?
Anon
Totally hear you. Can you take half day on a weekend and go to a Nordstrom’s and work with a personal shopper who can bring you a bunch of options? Don’t even need to buy a lot but it will help you figure out what shapes work better.
Anon
First, I feel your pain. Some women seem to have an easier time dropping the weight than others. For some of us, breastfeeding does not seem to help with weight loss. Exhaustion hurts the ability to lose weight and is correlated with weight gain. Try and accept your body as worthy of love and give yourself some grace during a wonderful but challenging time of life. It gets better, and you will find time and energy for workouts when you are less exhausted. I have been there.
No Face
Having a baby is a very abrupt body change, but even if you never had kids, your body would change over time. Not as dramatically, but it would change. Gravity and age were always going to get you. Trying to get to your prebaby body is a fool’s errand – even if you lost all the weight.
I looked and felt fantastic when I did Body Pump 3x/week after baby #1, even though I weighed about 20lbs more than I did pre-baby and I did not track any calories. Mourn, and then focus on being strong and healthy. Buy yourself some new-to-you clothes.
Newish Mom
I’ve incorporated weight lifting as part of my workout routine the past 6 months. The slow rate of transformation is what’s so frustrating. Pre-baby I could work out for a couple weeks and lose 5lbs with very little effort.
Anon
Read The Obesity Code before doing any calorie restrictions!
Anonymous
+1. I had issues with some of what was in the book (IF for women was not discussed in-depth, AT ALL), but it did cure me of the lingering temptation to restrict calories.
Anon
You recommend that on literally every post about weight but you’ve never said what it’s about or why somebody should read it.
Anonymous
First, even if you get down to your pre-pregnancy weight, your body will never be shaped the same. I returned to my pre-pregnancy weight but had to go down a pant size and switch styles because I no longer have a waist or hips. Go ahead and get clothes that fit you now.
Second, I am about your baseline weight, and I absolutely cannot lose weight on anything less than around 1800 calories per day. My body goes into some sort of starvation mode and hangs on to every calorie if I don’t give it enough fuel.
Third, are you on hormonal BC? I was 23 lbs above baseline weight on the Pill and 15 lbs above baseline on Mirena. If I’d stayed on either I’d just have kept gaining forever. Hormonal BC makes me ravenous and exhausted all the time, and no matter how much I starve myself I continuously gain weight.
Newish Mom
No hormonal BC.
It was definitely disheartening for the doctor to suggest that I should further cut my 1500 calorie diet. I’m ravenous with the workouts, and I recognize I can’t live off 1200 calories and keep my routine.
Anon
Did your doctor suggest that your body may be holding onto some pounds because you’re breastfeeding? That was how it worked for me. I gained more than you, so a lot of the pounds came off quickly, but the last 10-15 hung on until I finished BF.
Give yourself a break, mama. You made a whole human. You’re keeping that human alive with your body parts. Your body is actually amazing!!
Anonymous
Gently, is it possible this is as much about grieving your old life as it is about weight? Everything you’ve said seems to point to that.
Newish Mom
I know I am grieving my old life. But this is also very much wanting to look like the old me. I truly don’t recognize myself
Anon
Hugs from an internet stranger. I feel so much of this. I’m about the same time postpartum as you are and the weight will. not. come. off. I want to throttle people who say that it’s “all worth it” because I got my kid. Yes, I love my kid, but my husband had an [email protected] (whatever that is – not an experience I’ve had) and I got nine months of hell and a postpartum body.
It just sucks.
Vicky Austin
Your husband owes you one, big time.
Newish Mom
I had so much rage at my husband during the pregnancy which was unexpected and emergency c-section. I felt I sacrificed so much of my body for the pregnancy and he didn’t endure any of it.
Anonymous
Are you getting 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night? If given the choice between 8 hours’ sleep + no workout and 7 hours’ sleep + workout, for me 8 hours’ sleep + no workout would lead to better weight loss results.
Anon
+1 nothing makes me gain weight like not sleeping enough.
Newish Mom
No. Not getting a full 8hrs. It’s such a catch 22, with my day being occupied with baby and work from 6am-8pm. I like staying up until 10:30/11pm just to get some alone or adult time without the baby.
Baby is not fully sleeping through the night due to delayed teething, so it’s definitely interrupted sleep at that.
go for it
The transition is rough. Please, buy yourself a few cute outfits that fit right now and hide/ let go of ALL the prebaby clothes. You may never go back to them, and so be it. Live the life you are in now as opposed to the life you used to have. Two kids in I can assure you the body changes. I lost all the baby weight both times and my body absolutely no longer fit/ looked awesome in a number of my clothing items. For my mental health it was important for me to feel good in clothing, so off to the store I went.
Best to you.
Anonymous
+1. It may not seem like it, OP, but if you get clothes that fit you, the mental changes follow. It’s SO, SO, SO much easier to accept a different body when you’re comfortable in your new clothes. Ask me how I know.
Anon for this
Congratulations on the baby.
Some spend a decade and double / triple digit thousands and still don’t get there.
You made a person. Be gentle with yourself.

I know some posters here have had custom jewelry made. Can anyone speak to the cost? Looking at having a ring made for a milestone birthday that recycles some family stones.
Anon
I have had things made. My jeweler quotes a price including materials and labor so I’m not sure how much the labor alone is. But I’ve had two rings made – one was two skinny platinum bands fused together at the base and with small diamonds across the top of each. The second was a men’s style wide gold band with pave diamonds. Each ring was made to my specifications and if I recall correctly, around $2500 to $3000.
anon
I have had two rings made, but I did not provide any of the materials myself so my estimates aren’t going to help you. My rings were in the $1000 – $1200 range. One of the stones is a rutilated quartz and the other is a rough cut aquamarine. One ring is silver, the other gold. One involved a lot of design work, the other I picked between options. There are a lot of variables. Any reputable jeweler will give you a quote without any obligation – your best bet is to do that.
Senior Attorney
We had my engagement ring made. It was about $1000 (not including the stone, which we supplied) but we also contributed some scraps of gold so that brought the price down a bit.
