Readers had a great discussion over the weekend about trends in tights — as we've noted before, sheer tights have become a trend compared to more opaque tights (including “translucent” fleece tights).
(Even black pantyhose are in right now, which were always what I wore with suits — but when we had a poll about it back in the day, readers thought nude pantyhose were better for day (even in winter!), with black pantyhose only for evening looks.)
We'll put some of the other reader favorites below, but one of the big brands mentioned on the weekend thread was Sheertex tights — and the brand is having big sales at the moment.
These “sheer tights” (pictured) are among their bestsellers (and the #1 style in the U.S. right now, apparently), and they're 30% off, coming from $59 down to $41. They're available in sizes XS–3XL — nice!
Readers, what are your favorite tights and pantyhose brands at the moment?

Has anyone else experienced this? I’m just looking for similar experiences, and will seek medical advice if it gets worse.
I think I’ve developed a mild allergy to orange peel. Sometimes I use my teeth to start peeling an orange or tangerine (short fingernail problems), and the last 2 times, I’ve noticed that my lips tingle and swell up a bit after. I’ve stopped doing that, but last night I made my husband an old fashioned – after I tasted it, the area under my tongue swelled slightly, and I remembered I had wiped the rim of the glass with a twist of orange peel. We drank mimosas on New Years Day and I was fine, so I don’t think juice is a problem. I’m not sure if other citrus causes this…I haven’t used lemon or lime peel for anything lately. So weird!
Anonymous
It is possible to develop an allergy to limonene, which is in the peel but not the juice. It is also used as a fragrance in many things, so look out for that too!
Cat
you can def be allergic to just one part of something – a quick Google turns up limonene, a chemical found in the peels of citrus fruits!
anon
I seem to be super allergic to home cleaning sprays with orange oil, but I’m not allergic to oranges, so it’s definitely possible.
Anonymous
It’s normal. Look up Oral Food allergy syndrome as well. You can actually be allergic to a food like citrus (more serious) or you can be allergic to pollens related to the food (more common with stone fruits)
AIMS
In case you’re still reading – yes, possible. Could also be something in the wax coating of the peel if there is one (not sure if it’s same as lemons). One other thing to consider is you can be allergic to food that is less processed or uncooked and be okay with it when it’s not that way. I can’t do raw nuts but can eat them toasted without issue. I also don’t do certain stone fruit (OAS) but with the exception of one specific one, can have them if they are heavily cooked in a sauce. My reactions are all itchy, puffy, tingly.
Talk to an allergist. My reactions have never risen to the level of life threatening (fingers crossed they don’t) but one thing I try to do is always have Benadryl on hand just in case (a I just throw in a small travel pack into my wallet/purse). With my oral allergy syndrome, it will stop the reaction from getting worse and I figure I buy me some time to get help if needed. You can obviously get an epi pen if you need too.

Good call on the benadryl. Thank you!

We are trying to travel in April from Houston, but the flights to Europe are SO expensive. Are people just paying $6,000 for two people to travel across the pond these days?? More importantly, any suggestions for an easy trip for a week that might not be so expensive? Any travel websites that will help you find cheaper flights to help us brainstorm?
Anonymous
That’s very high. I use Google flights to track flight prices. It has a little bar at the bottom of the page that tells you the price range and where yours falls in that range. You can also play with your dates and airports pretty easily and then set a tracker for those.
Easter is early this year, March 31, so if you’re trying to travel the first week of April then you should probably choose different dates if possible.
Anon
Are you tied to a specific week in April or can you adjust your trip dates? Where I am (midwest US), the first full week of April is always spring break and prices for anything travel-related skyrocket.
It's me.
Good question.
It's me.
Good question. We are stuck with the specific date, but it isn’t the first week in April.

1 – are you flying out of a hub? I tend to see less “deals” on airfare from hubs, and as I live in a hub, it sucks :-/
2 – do you have to book now? I follow flight deal sites like The Flight Deal and Secret Flying, and they have been sharing a lo of flight deals to Europe but for Jan-Mar. Could you wait a month to see what shakes out for deals in April?
3 – It might be a better option to get a cheaper flight from another city, and then snag a flight there, but you’d have to run the numbers. I did this when I found a flight deal to Milan, but I had to fly to JFK for the deal, and the math worked out that it was cheaper to fly to JFK and then to Milan, than from my city to Milan.
Anon
Flights to Europe have gone up in price in recent years, but $3k per person for an economy ticket seems high to me, and April is not really peak season for Europe (prices are much higher in June through August than at spring break). We went for both spring break 2022 and 2023 and tickets were under $1k per person both times.
Google Flights has a feature where you can just enter “Europe” as destination and see prices to tons of cities, so you could choose a more affordable one. You will also probably pay a premium to go non-stop vs a layover, so if your budget is tight you may.
I’m guessing from Houston you probably have decently affordable Caribbean flights, and April is a good time to go there. Some of the French islands have a somewhat European feel and have great food.
Anon
*if you budget is tight you may want to choose a layover

Are you by any chance running into the runup to the Paris Olympics? The games themselves aren’t until later, but events start in April:

I just booked round trip from San Diego to Italy for around $1300 (Economy but not Economy lite, which means I will be uncomfortable but will get luggage and seat selection). I just looked at Google flights and there are literally dozens of flights to Europe from Houston in April in that range.
Unless you want to fly first or business class – in which case yes. People are paying that much unless they have miles to redeem for an upgrade.
Anon
$3k is cheap for business class these days. $5-7k is more typical for Europe, >$10k for Asia and Australia.

I did a quick google to see which airlines fly to Houston, saw Lufthansa and went to their homepage. Searched Houston-Berlin Saturday 13th April, away for a week.
Two adults, carry-on luggage, 2570 dollars in total. Add maybe 400 dollars for checked luggage.
I chose Lufthansa because they have excellent price comparison which also shows several other Star Alliance airlines like Austrian and Swiss. You could do the same with other alliances.
British Airways can take you direct to London and home, two people, for 2000 dollars, carry-on luggage.
You will get a better price starting your journey on Wed-Sat rather than Sun-Tues. You get a better price if Sunday is in the middle of your stay.
Anon
400 dollars for checked luggage!?! What are you packing? Lufthansa and other major airlines give you 1 checked bag and 1 carry on bag for free on a standard economy ticket, so unless you’re moving to Europe there’s no need to spend any money on luggage, let alone hundreds of dollars.
Anonymous
Ahaha, you’re right, I did mean 40-50 dollars, forgot the currency conversion.
Anon
That seems expensive. If you’re set on Europe, I’d recommend Portugal as a cheap spot to get to and get around in from the US. If you’re open to non-European spots, I’d recommend Panama – it is a quick flight from Houston, very cheap while there, they have tons of history plus great food, and it’s even on the US dollar so you don’t need to exchange money to visit.
anoanonanoananon
That’s more than I’ve paid for each of my last three round-trip business-class tickets (East Coast to the UK, Vienna, then Italy).
Look at fares that bundle flight & hotel directly from the airline — sometimes those can be a very good deal, as in the package price is the same or less than just booking the airfare.
If you’ve got an American Express Platinum card, check airfare using the “International Air Program,” which sometimes (not always) has slightly discounted fares. In that vein, check prices via various credit cards’ travel portals. The fares are usually similar to Expedia but not always. Consider using your credit card points (Ultimate Rewards, Membership Rewards) to lower the cash price of the ticket — you’re not limited to frequent flier availability, but you’re paying all or part with the points. You can also pay partially with points via British Airways (using Avios) and other airlines: it’s not the best deal from a frequent-flier perspective, but if the goal is to reduce costs it’s fine as an infrequent traveler.
Look at low-cost airlines like Norse Atlantic, Icelandair, etc., but be aware of what is included in the fare, because ancillary fees will add up and you’ll be at the price of legacy carriers quickly.
Anon
Icelandair is a good thought. We ended up going to Iceland last summer because Icelandair fares were so much more affordable than other carriers, but you can also fly them to the continent with a layover in Iceland. As somewhat of a counterpoint, Icelandair is definitely a no frills airline but we didn’t experience a lot of added costs. I think the only difference vs legacy carriers was they don’t serve you food on the plane, and that’s like $20.

Any Copenhagen restaurant/activity recs? Going next week for work, but tacked on a few extra days. Into vegetarian restaurants, baked goods, arts museum, etc. Would normally want to hit up all the saunas, but am pregnant so out of luck for this trip.

Will you be there when the queen abdicates? There will be a lot of events celebrating the hand-over to Frederik X.

Baked goods are amazing in Copenhagen! There are many top rated ones – I really enjoyed Juno. As far as museums, I absolutely loved the Louisiana Museum. It’s worth the short drive/train out of the city.

Highly recommend a day trip over to Malmo, Sweden. It’s a bit of a different culture and we really enjoyed it. We did this one: https://www.viator.com/tours/Copenhagen/The-Most-Complete-Private-Day-Trip-to-Malmo-with-Swedish-Lunch-Included/d463-110975P26
We also did this full day walking tour and it was very good including lunch: https://www.viator.com/tours/Copenhagen/Copenhagen-Private-Full-Day-Tour-with-Lunch-Hygge-Walking-and-Gastro-Experience/d463-110975P22
An absolute highlight was dinner with a young Danish woman at her home, which we arranged through http://www.meetthedanes.com. We hit it off so well that we ended up meeting up with her a few days later and she showed us around the Rosenborg Castle and the Crown Jewels, and we all had a boat tour and lunch at Nyhavn.
Finally, we really enjoyed Tivoli Gardens, which is the original inspiration for Disneyland.
Just be prepared for it all to be eye-wateringly expensive.

I just need to vent. Every time my husband enters the kitchen, I swear to god, he leaves every surface greasy, sticky, and covered with crumbs. I have to wash spice bottles off after he cooks because he grabs them in the middle of cooking with dirty hands. He is a messy eater and he doesn’t clean up the dining table after he eats there. He grew up in a household with significantly lower cleanliness standards than I did, so he sees no problem with this. To top it all off, the last time we saw his dad, his dad was talking about how Americans have terrible table manners (neither DH or FIL are American). Awful rich coming from somebody who didn’t bother to teach his own son.
/End rant
Anon
Stop cleaning up after him!!! He’s an adult, he can take responsibility.
Anon
I get that she shouldn’t clean up after him, but its also OK for OP to want a kitchen that isn’t covered in grease.
This is a communication problem. He’s the one who should be doing it. It’s disrespectful to OP because she has made it clear that she doesn’t want to live like this, and his response is that he “sees no problem with it,” which is another way of saying “I don’t care if it bothers you.”
anon
This. If she stops cleaning it, it’s only going to drive her insane. Not him.
OP, this would make me rage.
Anon
You’re right that it’s fair for her to not want to live in a house covered in grease. I also wouldn’t. But the solution isn’t to just clean up after him every time with resentment building.
I’d have a conversation with him that it feels like he doesn’t care if it bothers you. If he agrees that he can clean up, then hold him to that.
My boyfriend and I had a spot that he would continually leave messy that drove me insane very reasonably. So we had this conversation. When I noticed he’d forgotten or had done a bad job, I’d remind him. Now he cleans up that spot if he makes a mess and doesn’t forget anymore. I just don’t think it’s unreasonable for each person in a relationship to expect their partners to care about stuff that is important to them.
Anon
He’ll probably never clean it up to her standards. He grew up this way and doesn’t “see it” the way she does. To change that now would be like opting into an anxiety disorder.
If he’s noticing it and letting it go or leaving it for her to clean, then yeah he should clean up after himself instead. But if he simply doesn’t notice it, he’s not likely to start.
Anon
I’m the person who suggested the talk above, and I disagree. He might not WANT to learn to see it, but he CAN (assuming he is neurotypical).
Even if he has to whisper to himself, “Wipe the spice containers” each time after he cooks, he can learn to do it. I used to be a messy person and now I am not because I wanted to learn how to make sure my surroundings were clean. Also, I’d bet there are things his boss thinks are important that he never learned how to do until he was at his job.
I do agree that it’s unreasonable to ask him to do it exactly like she would or to make him steam clean the entire kitchen after cooking. But it is NOT unreasonable to ask a grown adult to wipe up with a Clorox wipe when he’s done cooking.
Anon
I said he could opt into an anxiety disorder (“wipe the spices, wipe the spices”), but sometimes it’s better to be careful what we wish for?
I’m amazed at what people never learn for their bosses though.
Anon
No, because I do not want my hands and my clothes to be covered in grease every time I walk in the kitchen.

First – this would drive me absolutely insane. I honestly think men’s hands generate more oil because I am forever wiping palm/finger prints off of faucet/appliance handles! My mom and female friends agree that this is a common issue in their homes too if it helps.
Two things that might help – we have a small box of alcohol wipes in the kitchen to sanitize probe thermometers/spices we grab with meat juice on our hands. It’s easier to get my husband to grab these than a paper towel + spray. Microfiber cloths – we have a drawer full and leave a clean one next the sink at all times. It’s sturdy so I can scrub up honey/juice/etc. and the visual cue of a ‘rag’ that’s easy to grab (vs. having to open a cabinet for paper towels + spray) seems easier for my family.
anon
My husband is a slob in the kitchen too – leaves a horrible mess when he cooks, but on top of that, he’s some sort of paper towel fiend. Every time I pass through the kitchen after he’s been there, I find crumpled up paper towels with not much mess on them (mostly used to dry his hands, I think??) scattered in various places on our countertop. He doesn’t like to throw them away if they can be used again but then they never are because he forgets they’re there. Don’t tell me just to leave them for him to clean up, if I did that we’d be buried in paper towels up to our necks before he noticed. Why are men?
Seventh Sister
I swear my spouse will use four bowls and three spoons to make Kraft Mac & Cheese for the kids. The only solution I have found is cleaning the kitchen thoroughly at the end of the day.
Senior Attorney
You really need to decide if this is a deal breaker or the price of admission to the relationship. My husband loves to cook but he doesn’t clean up to my standards afterwards (apparently he truly does not see the salt and crumbs and splashes on the work surfaces), so we’ve solved it by designating me as the clean-up person. One the (blessedly rare) occasions when it gets under my skin, I keep repeating “price of admission, price of admission” and remembering the things I do that undoubtedly bug him.
If it’s a deal-breaker, though, that needs to be dealt with. I don’t think there is any middle ground once you’ve discussed more than two or three times.
anon
Some days, I am so glad I’m not married.
Anon
Sympathy from me, my husband is also like this. The fridge door handle and taps are so gross. Some things that helped were buying him an apron to wear while cooking and making tea towels (I forget what you call them in the US) within easy reach so he always has somewhere to wipe his hands. And I clean the taps and fridge more often because he’s worth it. I have plenty of my own faults. That’s not to say I don’t get cranky at cocoa fingerprints everywhere!

Where do you buy your suits now a days? I need an interview suit (lawyer moving back to a more formal job; has a baby recently so my old one doesn’t fit right now). I haven’t bought a suit in like 7 years at this point.

CapHillStyle posted today that Ann Taylor has several fresh offerings. Like you, I haven’t bought a suit in years.

bought two from JCrew a couple years ago….using those as needed for interview, formal meeting. Got lucky that they fit and don’t need tailoring

Take a look at Talbots. It’s pretty frumpy for casual clothes, but it’s always carried some nice, classic suits. Sometimes you can even find them in wool!

Tahari is a go l-to for me; I got a suit from Nordstrom’s for under $200 (Tahari TSL) two years ago and get loads of compliments each time I wear it. I had to load up on suits earlier this year (job switch) and had great luck with sheath dresses and blazers on ThredUp for really reasonable prices from Theory, Tahari, and similar brands.

Have we discussed Modern Citizen? I need to get a few bridge pieces as I’m a bit heavier in my midsection (menopause body plus holidays?). What is the quality like and how do pieces fit? I LIKE DRESSES WITH BOOTS IN THE WINTER (sorry for shouting – phone is possessed today).

Are there any new trends in necklaces? I’m not a huge trend follower, and you can pry some of my pendants and one or two choice statement necklaces out of my cold dead hands. But I’m pretty tired of the multiple chain look, and wondering if there’s anything new to replace it.
Anon
I think chain necklaces like your pendants layered with necklaces of other materials, like tiny semiprecious gemstone strands, are the trending look. If you like pendants, try putting them together on one chain, then layer that with the semiprecious gemstone necklace of about the same length as your chain. I’ll try to post a link.
(My preference is always going to be tiny baroque pearls as well)

I just started wearing Sheertex in the last year or so, and have had no problems with rips. I’m tall, too, so I always really tug on tights when pulling them up all the way.
