As the weather gets warmer, how are you changing your workouts? Are there things you only do inside, and things you only do outside? How do you deal with fickle weather (and allergies!), and what do you wear for springtime workouts?
(As far as trends go — are you going for hot girl walks? Doing one of the many challenges that crop up around this time of the year?)
Psst: in the past we've talked about the best strength training programs to do without a gym and the best streaming workouts to do at home. We've had an open thread on how to hire a personal trainer, shared tips on finding time to exercise, and how to get lunch workouts during workdays. We've also talked in general about how to build good habits, and discussed some niche topics like biking to work and the best hiking gear.
My Springtime Workouts
Every spring, without fail, I decide I want to start walking outside more often — which is great, until I remember that I also have spring allergies. This year, with the crazy weather, I started Claritin back in February, so hopefully I'm ahead of the game. I'm also pondering Couch to 5K / getting back into running outdoors.
I'd also love to work in more exercise snacks like lunchtime walks.
What I Wear for Spring Workouts
I always wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen… and the rest of my outfit depends heavily on the weather, but I usually wear a sweatshirt over a t-shirt, along with leggings, and occasionally a coat… if I need to take off a layer I usually prefer to take the sweatshirt off rather than the coat for Pocket Reasons, if that makes sense.
Readers, over to you — as the weather gets warmer, how are you changing your workouts? Are there things you only do inside, and things you only do outside? How do you deal with fickle weather (and allergies!), and what do you wear for springtime workouts?
Don't forget sun protection (especially face, hands, and chest)! Sunscreens readers have loved over the years are pictured above: Elta MD, Supergoop!, and this $17 sunscreen (Kat's favorite). Sephora's 2024 Sun Safety Kit is also out and a huge hit with readers. If you're hunting for cute rash guards, check out J.Crew, Boden, Coolibar, and Athleta.

YES, I’m finally running outdoors again, and it is glorious.

Committed runner, so I run in almost all weather. Move indoors for heat, ice, snow, or lightning. Otherwise, I almost always run outside, unless my routine calls for cross-training or treadmill work. (I find tempo runs easier to do on the treadmill because the machine sets the pace.)

I love to practice yoga on our front porch. We’re tucked back in the woods so it’s not exposed, and I have a heavy mat I leave out all summer long which gets dirty and I just hose off. It’s ALMOST warm enough to put it out.
I’ve also been known to haul weights from our basement gym to the front porch when it’s just too nice to go downstairs, but I’ve been lifting with heavy weights and idk if that’s going to happen much this year. 25s-35s are kind of a lot to be hauling up and down stairs :)

I ran outdoors all winter, with the exception of one very cold week (temps were below 10F)– otherwise, I’m a believer in the adage “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”– in the winter I wore wool socks, trail shoes/yaktrax if needed, fleecy running tights, layers up top, gloves or mittens. Now that the weather’s warmed up, I’m in shorts and a sleeveless top, with a running cap. Sunscreen always. I do 1-2 easy recovery rides on my Peloton, but other than that run outdoors as much as I possibly can, even tempo runs– I really, really, really hate the treadmill so I avoid it at all costs. And I have one at home! If it’s really hot, I get up to run super early.
Oh, and I always carry phone/keys/gels (on long days) in a Flip Belt, which I highly recommend! Aside from my shoes, it’s the single item I run with the most.
So no, I haven’t changed up my routine, but I *have* changed the outfits.
