This is more a post about the wonders of sunscreen sticks than an endorsement of any particular sunscreen stick, although I do like this Neutrogena one (and this Thinkbaby one and this Cerave one) — but I never knew these things existed before I had kids. I bought a baby-friendly one to stick in my diaper bag and, I must say, I'm amazed at how often I've used the sunscreen stick and how grateful I've been to have it in my bag — at least once every summer I find myself surprised to be out with the family on such a sunny day and end up using it on my face, chest, ears, neck, hands, and any scars, and then attacking my husband and kids with it (mwah ha ha). (To be totally clear, I use sunscreen every day on my face and chest, but I only apply my usual sunscreen once a day — whereas if we're at the beach or otherwise out and about we apply it a lot more places and a lot more frequently, like every 60-90 minutes.) Because sunscreen sticks are solids they don't leak, and although I do replace them every few years for freshness and potency, they do hold up pretty well even when they're on the older side. My two cents — go to the EWG site for sunscreen recs that give you information about the ingredients in them. I was really surprised about how certain brands shook out in the EWG reviews.

I don’t understand, you’d trust a seafood-industry-funded body to comment on something that is totally outside its wheelhouse? It even labels these posts ‘truth squad’, and if there’s one thing that I know for certain, it’s that something touting itself as ‘the TRUTH about X’ is frequently quite one-sided. this is so ridiculous it’s like a caricature.

i am literally checking out at target right now – have reliably purchased neutrogena’s pure baby sunscreen stick for years but have moved on after i saw that i could do better per EWG ratings – now have purchased babyganic’s. also from target. wish that darned coppertone one would come back in stock, but alas.

I just bought the Babo Clear Zinc sport stick and it’s great. Very easy to rub in without much of a white cast for a mineral sunscreen stick.

Hey guys, I need help finding a bit of a unicorn shoe. I need a very specific shoe for a wedding but it’s sold out so I need to find a dupe. The one I was supposed to get is: https://www.callitspring.com/us/en_US/Dellmar-Light%20Pink/p/11237480
Essentially, like pink, smooth suede velvet material, dorsay heel with ankle strap, toes out.
Any suggestions?

Lower heel, but try these? I wore the burgundy for my wedding and my bridesmaids wore the beige. There are loads of similar styles in the suggested from here, so have fun!

I like this sunscreen (the Neutr*gena one pictured) but in no world would call it non-greasy. To the contrary, really, I find it a bit greasy but not so bad that I mind wearing it places other than the pool or beach.
Also, Kat: I’m a huge supporter of yours but you need to proof your posts a bit better–you used the phrase “I must say” at least three times in one paragraph.

Aren’t physical sunscreens a lot better than chemical ones in terms of blocking the sun’s rays? A few years ago I read something to that effect and have just been using physical sunscreens, but they tend to be more expensive and there aren’t as many options.
Anyone else know much about this?

I’m not sure of the effectiveness of one versus the other, but I do know physical sun screens turn my skin purple.

physical sun screens turn my face white — they absorb less, are harder to apply, etc.
Meal Prep
Favorite freezer meals? Entering a busy season at work, DH is about to have a surgery that will leave him down for the count for months, I have a two year old. . .and have I mentioned I’m pregnant? We’ve outsourced everything possible through the end of the year and I want to do a huge meal prep session this weekend for easy dinners. We try to eat healthy-ish, so preferably nothing with cream-of-whatever soup.
thehungryaccountant
I prepped these meals for my mother before she underwent an ankle replacement. They’re quicker in an instant pot, but they also include crockpot instructions. Korean BBQ Beef is particularly outstanding served in flour tortillas w kimchi.
https://pinchofyum.com/12-healthy-freezer-meals
If you’re not looking for a specific recipe, some of my favorite “quickie” meals are either sheet pan (frozen veggies + protein + seasoning) or simmer sauce curry (brown onions & protein in pot, add veggies, add pre-made simmer sauce).
Coach Laura
Those pinchofyum ones above look great. Someone on here posted 12 Crockpot freezer meals from Costco (12 meals in 75 minutes) on a prior thread. It looks more basic than pinchof yum (who is always fantastic) but it has a free shopping and prep list too. https://thefamilyfreezer.com/2014/11/18/crockpot-freezer-meals-from-costco-12-meals-75-minutes/

I make giant pots of soup and freeze them in individual portions.
Super healthy. I leave the skins on the potatoes for more nutrients and easier prep. I also use the “fancy” bacon bits – not the weird pellets that clearly aren’t bacon – to avoid having to cook bacon. I let it simmer on the stovetop for a couple hours instead of all day in a slow cooker, but go with whichever is easiest. https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/hearty-manhattan-clam-chowder/
Use frozen hash browns and packaged diced ham (in fridge case near the other hams and lunch meats). https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/56927/delicious-ham-and-potato-soup/

Ina Garten’s pastitsio is the favorite freezer meal at my house; we are making a double batch to freeze (once the 10 pounds of oxtails in my freezer get cooked, don’t ask) in a few weeks for a friend who is due with numbers 5 and 6 in June. Recipe is findable via the Googz on nola dot com or in her “Make It Ahead” cookbook. Her lasagne also freezes well.
We also like chili reheated; freeze in one quart bags to use over pasta, over hot dogs, over totchos, or by itself.
Last recommendation is a double or triple batch of your favorite meatballs (turkey, beef, pork, veal, or a combo). Form, brown and bake; then cool on a tray and put into a storage container. Add to pasta and jarred sauce, put on a roll with sauce and mozz for a quick grinder, or just add to the simmer sauce of your choice and serve with grain or rice.

Should I take a vacation? If so, where? Unlike most people here and most people in my peer group, I don’t vacation yearly. It’s not an income issue as I’m at a ~200k HHI. It’s just a — planning; why bother traveling alone; waste of money etc. issue. I DO end up taking 2-3 short trips during the year and if you piece those together it ends up being 3-6 nights total. However I live in DC and of those nights, at least 2-3 end up being in NYC — where I used to live. I miss it, I love fancy hotels, so I’ll go up there once or maybe 2x/yr and stay in fancy hotel, walk around the city, shop, see a friend or two. However, when I DO go away someplace new, I tend to enjoy myself and “feel better” (not that anything is wrong, I just think it’s the change of scenery).
So because of this I’m not well traveled and can’t really figure out if I should go someplace late this summer (Aug/Sept) and where. I’d like to stay domestic. I tend to be ok spending about $2000 though I can go up on that range — 4 days/3 nights max. Last trip (about 2 years ago now) was to Vegas and I ended up loving it. I tend to like a place where I don’t have to plan anything — a city-ish place where I can stroll out of my fancy hotel, walk around for as long as I want and keep running into things to do, grab coffee and sit etc. and then when I get tired of it, I go back to said hotel. Vegas was great for that; even ended up discovering my hotel had an art gallery/exhibit that I wanted to see and got tickets to a show while in Vegas. I’d love to go back to Vegas though NOT in Aug/Sept — as I don’t do well with heat. Anything in CA fit the bill? I know downtown LA isn’t a walkable kind of place, but how about one of the beach areas like Santa Monica etc or is there not enough to do? I’m not wedded to 3 nights, but if I’m flying 6 hours, then it can’t be a 36 hour trip like DC to NYC. How are Seattle or Portland or other places in the pacific NW?
Gail the Goldfish
I love Santa Monica, though I don’t know if it’d keep you occupied for 4 days, depending on how much activity you want. I could sit on the beach and pier and people watch all day, but that’s just me. You could always uber elsewhere in the city if you need a break, though. And it’s not California, but what about Chicago? Stay at a fancy hotel downtown, stroll around, duck in to a museum, maybe see a play? Basically do what you’d do in NYC, just in a new city. Though for pleasant weather in August, you might better head to the pacific NW. Unfortunately never been, so I can’t advise on a specific town in that area.
Senior Attorney
Actually DTLA is getting more walkable all the time. Stay at the Omni, say, and walk out the door and check out the new Broad Museum, which is next to the Museum of Contemporary Art and several very good restaurants, and next door to the Walt Disney Hall and down the block from the cathedral. And then you can take the Angels Flight funicular down to the Grand Central Market and the Bradbury Building. Certainly you could kill at least a couple of days.
anon a mouse
It might help to think about what you want out of a trip, and then start to narrow accordingly. Once I realized that “vacation” was really an umbrella term for Travel, Leisure or Family trips, it helped frame my thinking. Going to a place with lots of historic sites? Travel. Going to a beach? Leisure. (And a trip to see Family is never Leisure in my world.)
Do you want to recharge? Should you find a spa somewhere or a cabin in the woods? Or do you want to go somewhere with lots to see and do? Both Portland and Seattle have lots that might fit the bill for you, especially for using a hotel as a base camp and explore.

+2 to Chicago, but I’d stay at the HIlton Chicago on Michigan Ave. (which we liked better than the Waldorf because of its location and rooftop patio; our room at the Waldorf was much nicer and larger though). I’d also delay the trip until October when kids are in school and weather is cooler.
Anon
I know you said you wanted to stay domestic, but what about Iceland? It’s still a short flight and you can hang out in Reykjavik without planning things other than a hotel. Definitely not a problem with heat there in August. Montreal and Toronto are also options if you don’t mind Canada.
Never too many shoes...
Toronto and Montreal are both really hot in August, just like DC, so I am not sure that is what the OP is looking for exactly.
anon
Quebec City will be further north and cool. It will satisfy the walkable plus lots of fancy hotels.
Inspired by Hermione
Seattle sounds perfect. Stay downtown at the Four Seasons. Everything is walkable. August is now smoke season, but September should be absolutely beautiful. There are so many neighborhoods that are a walk or a quick Lyft from downtown and downtown itself has lots to do and see. Make sure you go to the sculpture park at sunset!
Anon
Why not San Francisco? It is a true city, which it sounds like you enjoy, and is very unlikely to be hot in August. I’d either stay near the water, like at the hotel vitale (avoid touristy fisherman’s wharf though) or near union square – I like the St Francis. Nob hill has the fanciest hotels but it’s a walk down a steep hill to really do anything, and then you have to walk back up…
Anon
I think you would enjoy San Diego. I find the weather to be really nice year round and there’s a lot you can do. I particularly love La Jolla and the cove with the seals, but also enjoy Balboa Park and the Zoo, and there are tons of outdoor restaurants and bars on the beach!

Paris. Live a little. You’re miserable in your life. Go for a week. Try something new. Spend 5k.
Monte
This seems unnecessary. OP may not be the sparkiest person in the world but she sounds happy because she sounds comfortable. No need to be nasty.
OP, I value travel highly and travel mostly alone, so I would definitely say go. Paris and London are both easy from DC but the time difference can be a pain. Domestically, Portland would be great for 3 nights, as I imagine Seattle would be (never been). Vancouver isn’t domestic but would also be great that time of year — I went the same time last year, planned very little, and loved it. Chicago would also be awesome. For three nights, honestly, it’s hard to go wrong — you will stumble on something fun.
Anonymous
Adding in Vancouver. It would be perfect for this. You could combine with Seattle or Victoria if you want a longer trip. I’d encourage a longer trip every now and then. I am much like you (in fact we’d potentially be great travel companions) but you will re charge better if you can possibly swing 7-10 days.

Help please! Need ideas for a <$50 mother's day gift for my stepmom that I can order today and have it arrive by Saturday (she's in TX). I have a 5 month old baby so I was thinking something with a picture of my daughter, but I don't want anything too cheesy. I already gave stepmom/dad a framed pic of baby for Xmas. Any ideas are much appreciated!

I once did a mouse pad with a collage of pictures of the whole family and my parents on it for Father’s Day. My dad still uses it years later :). Croatia
We are traveling to Croatia at the end of the month. Itinerary is 2 full days in Dubrovnik, 2 in Hvar, 1.5 in Split, and a day in Plitvice Lakes. We do have some flexibility in the itinerary, but for the most part we are set. Anyone have any recommendations on things to do or places to eat? We are mid thirties and fairly active so any recommendations for hiking, water activities, etc would be great. TIA!
Croatia
Had a very similar itinerary for my honeymoon in Croatia.
If you’re into depressing history (I am), I really liked the War Photo Museum in Dubrovnik. We also did a Game of Thrones walking tour and gallery hopped. We did our City Walls walk first thing in the morning, before it got too hot. I can’t remember any specific restaurants but Dolce Vita has this amazing nectarine and honey gelato.
In Split, there was a seafood pasta dish at a restaurant called Corto Maltese that was so good we went twice. There’s also a restaurant called Tratorria Tinnel that has prawns in a tomato sauce that are so good that I’m still thinking about them a year later. Also a lovely dessert place called Luka.
Anonymous
Not sure if you’re still reading, but in Split eat at Villa Spitza (though be prepared to wait, and be sure to go early since they eventually run out of most of the menu options) and go extreme canyoning. There are a ton of different companies that do it, and if you’re active, outdoorsy people you would love it. It’s basically like white water rafting without the raft–you climb along rocks, float down the rapids, rappel down cliffs, jump off waterfalls, etc. all with just a wetsuit, lifejacket, and helmet. It was amazing!
Free from Mom
My mother and I had a fight this weekend, but it finally made me realize that she is incredibly toxic and I do not need to have a relationship with her. It is really liberating, although I wish this realization would have happened decades ago. I can’t really share with people IRL except my husband so sharing here!
My mother was haranguing me about my upcoming home purchase, everything from criticizing me for not getting a loan from a “real bank” (not my fault she has never heard of BoA or Citi?!?!) to not buying what she calls a “real house” (i.e., single family home) to spending too much (even though my reason for not buying a single family home is to be more conservative) to criticizing my and my husband’s income level as being too low (we have an HHI of >350k that she knows somehow – I didn’t tell her), and explaining if we made more we wouldn’t be struggling so much (if we’re struggling, I was unaware of it). That is all par for the course, but the kicker was when she went off on me about how we shouldn’t expect help from her and my dad (don’t need it, never asked for it even though they have millions of dollars) and threw it back in my face my “twelve years of school they paid for.” Since they didn’t help with college/grad school, she had to have been referring to covering my living expenses for PUBLIC school K-12 (I skipped a grade)?!?! Man oh man oh man.

Bathroom Reno Help
Shot in the dark / late day help requested. We are upgrading our bathroom and looking for a bathroom vanity with matching linen cabinet. This is proving to be harder than I thought because we need a 60 inch double vanity, a pretty skinny 14-15 inch tall cabinet, and I want the cabinet to be closed cabinet doors (not open shelving or glass doors). Are there any bathroom furniture lines you would recommend? I’ve scoured Wayfair, RH (love their bathroom vanities, not a lot of linen cabinet options), Fairmont Designs (linen cabinets too wide). Would love other suggestions, open to any price range right now.
Chi Squared
Room and Board? Or have them custom made by a furniture maker. Most of the bathroom vanities you see on Houzz, etc. are custom.

I’ve always had a really difficult time talking about my feelings in romantic relationships and asking for what I want. It’s something I’m currently working on in therapy, but it’s still HARD. And I need to do it soon with the person I’ve been seeing lately. I just have such a hard time convincing myself that my feelings are valid and that I am entitled to at least ask for what I want. Can you all just tell me that it’s a perfectly valid thing to ask the person you’ve been dating to be in a relationship? TIA; I’m going to go curl up in an anxious ball now.
ATL rette
100% valid!!!! You deserve to ask for what you want in a relationship, and anybody who doesn’t understand that isn’t someone you’d want to date/be in a relationship with anyway.

Like physically, during gardening? Or asking for other things? Maybe reframe it as telling instead of asking — what you need, what would make you hot, you love it when, you hate it when, etc.
