I say this as someone who relies heavily on Uniqlo for my wardrobe workhorses (basic trousers and blouses, mostly):
Is it just me or is this new collab really disappointing?
My 85 year old mother would like to go on vacation with me and my sisters. She will pay for everything. Although my mother is in pretty good physical condition, she does have some issues with walking but I think it’s primarily due to bad shoes and bunions. She line dances, is a hospice volunteer and goes to the gym on a regular basis. I was thinking something along the lines of a cruise or tour, where she can participate or not, depending on how she feels that day. My sister suggested renting a house somewhere, which we’ve done in the past, but my sisters are a lot of talk and very little action. When we’ve redone this in the past, I found and vetted the house, made the arrangements, bought groceries, arranged for day trips, and listened to everyone complain about this and that. I’d much rather go on a tour have someone else handle all that details.
Please tell me your recommendations for fun trips that you’ve done with your elderly parents.
Where do you live, what is the budget, and what does your mother like to do?
OP here. I’m in the Northeast, one sister is in Phoenix, the other sister is in MD. Budget: $15-$20K. Mother is open to many things.
Depending on the ages of you and your sisters, a Road Scholar trip might be good. The programs are education-focused but the content differs depending on where you go, and you can select a trip based on activity level. We went to Costa Rica with two other couples earlier this year, on the third of its four activity levels (“keep the pace”); the age range was 57 to 67 and the activity level was good, a little easy on some days, a bit more when we were hiking mountains. A slower pace tour would work for your mother,, and she also can opt out. Everything is planned, which is both good and bad.
Or maybe check out a river cruise? Last year one of my sisters took our 83-year-old mother on a schmancy cruise on the Danube, with excursions in cities including Vienna, Prague and Budapest (are those all on the Danube? I can’t remember) and they had a wonderful time.
You might look at Overseas Adventure Travel trips, too.
For that budget you can charter a small crewed sailing yacht. I did that with my mom a couple years ago in the US Virgin Islands, and it was the dreamiest vacation of our lives. Amazing snorkeling at reefs that aren’t accessible from land, beautiful scenery, nothing on the agenda except swimming, snorkeling, sailing and reading. If I had the funds, I would charter a yacht for every vacation for the rest of my life. There are so many great spots to go beyond the Caribbean…Greece, Croatia, Spain’s Balearic Islands, the Seychelles, Indonesia, etc.
I think luxury cruises would be good too if you want a bigger boat and a slightly more structured experience. Look at Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania and Windstar. They all have lots of great itineraries to pick from.
I love that you’re doing this! My mom is a very active 71 and we’ve started doing mother-daughter trips together in recent years. I hope we’ll still be doing it when she’s 85!
