We thought it'd be a fun discussion today to talk about your (and our) favorite and least favorite fashion trends. Which trends do you like, and which do you hate? Which past trends do you miss, and which ones have you bid good riddance? In the past, we've discussed style vs. trend vs. frump, trends you won't wear to work (2016 edition), trends and the conservative office (2015 edition), and trends you're totally sick of (2013 edition).

If you haven't been paying much attention to trends recently and/or haven't done much shopping of late, here are some roundups of 2019 trends: Stitch Fix, Harper's BazaarRefinery29, The Guardian

Here's the format you can copy for commenting below:

First, here are some thoughts on current and past trends from the Corporette team:

Kat

Current trends I like: Flats with skirts. Trumpet skirts. Puff sleeves and blazers (but then, I don't like my shoulders, so a baby puff is very flattering). Everything washable.

Current trends I don't like: Bodysuits! ’90s sandals! Floral babydoll dresses! Baby tees. I still also find midi skirts very difficult to wear. Cold shoulder. Ruffles. Serial killer glasses.

Trends I wish would come back: Not quite a shopping trend, but in general it feels like we never get dressed up for anything anymore — restaurants, theater, everything is so casual and laidback. I kind of miss getting dressed up for stuff!

Trends I hope will never come back:
Numerous butterfly clips on your hair. Everything in this YouTube video making fun of ’90s makeup.

Kate

Current trends I like: Moto jackets (they're back, right?), tiny polka dots, jean skirts, tie-dye (well, to a degree), microblading (wish I could get this done by Piret Aava!)

Current trends I don't like: Ruffles, cold-shoulder tops (are these gone yet?!), animal prints, spaghetti straps (only because I can't go without a real bra), puff sleeves (sorry, Anne!), huge glasses frames, fake freckles (they look so unnatural 90% of the time!)

Trends I wish would come back:
Flared/bootcut jeans, although I feel like they're slowly coming back (?)

Trends I hope will never come back: Stonewash jeans, overalls, peplum, dresses over pants, extreme-low-rise jeans, uniform shirts worn ironically, chunky highlights

April

Current trends I like: Ripped denim, block heels, three-quarter sleeves, white sneakers (NOT the ones with the thick soles), dresses with sleeves, delicate gold jewelry, one-piece swimsuits, mom jeans, headbands, big eyebrows, backpacks

Current trends I don't like: Crop tops, puffy shoulders, scrunchies, track suits (see, Hailey Bieber), tiny sunglasses, really high-cut swimsuit bottoms, cropped jackets, long pointy nails, midi skirts and tea length

Trends I wish would come back: Statement belts, jeans tucked into high boots, shrugs, polo shirts, denim skirts (are they back?), plaid and Buffalo checks, shearling

Trends I hope never come back: Overplucked eyebrows, dark brown lipstick, scrunch socks, feathered bangs, body glitter, fedoras, low-cut jeans, trucker hats (basically all early ’00s fashion)

Elizabeth

Current trends I like: High-waisted pants

Current trends I don't like: Midi skirts, bike shorts, cold shoulders

Trends I wish would come back: Doc Martens

Trends I hope never come back: Flannel

Your turn, readers: What are your favorite and least favorite fashion trends of 2019?

  1. One-button blazers. It looks terrible on me and I’m holding out for the day when it’s easier to find 2 or 3 button blazers. I don’t know if the one-button thing counts as a trend, but it seems like they were less common a few years ago.

  2. Trends I like – Midi skirts (I must be in the minority), maxi dresses, trumpet skirts, jean skirts, drop waists

Trends I don’t like – shoulder ruffles, ripped denim, crop tops

Trends I wish would come back – It’s not really a trend, but I miss being able to find things made of natural fibers. Poly-blend tops in humid, DC-area summer is a big NO.

    1. I love midi skirts! I usually sit with my legs criss-crossed under me, so midi skirts let me move and sit comfortably while still staying covered. I’m glad they’re starting to come back. For a while they were practically impossible to find.

    2. I also love midis! I’m tall though, so wearing shorter skirts often end up being too short on me.

  3. Current trends I like: I have a middle-aged mom bod so skinny/straight pants and longer tops work great on me — I hope they never leave. But of course if this middle-aged mom is on that train, it’s on the way out.

Current trends I don’t like: I’m meh on the trend of T-shirts with a tie at the front hem. I have one and I love the color but the tie hangs down right in front of my cr*tch and it’s a nuisance in the bathroom.

All the ’90s/late ’00s trends I see right now make me cringe, either because they were ugly then and are ugly now or because they remind me of how long it’s been since I wore them. I loved block heels in 1997 but they just look wrong to me now.

Trends I wish would come back: Riding boots over jeans. So warm and comfy in the winter!

    1. I agree with the front tie tees. I thought they looked cool in catalogs, then I saw photos of myself wearing one and thought it just looks like I have a little tail in my crotch. It also takes away from the structure that I want a welted top to create so I started to tie both tails to the side with a brooch and won’t be buying any more tops like this.

I love that bootcuts and wide legs are back. I also sooo love that pointed toes are back. They look awesome with the former and fit my foot shape.

I really wish casual structured tops would come back. I’m tired of “super soft” clingy transparent materials that require layers upon layers to make them world appropriate. I’d like a thicker shirt with darts or dolman sleeves or a structured waist and a hem that I don’t have to magic with every time I use the bathroom.

  4. I miss when colored denim was all the rage. I rocked those bright red skinny jeans.

    1. I agree with the OP. I prefer natural fabrics, such as COTTON and wool (in the winter). There is too much stuff being made in Asia and the Indian peninsula where they use fake fabrics, just b/c the colors stay brighter. Men and women on the bus and subways wearing these fake fabrics often smell terrible b/c the fabrics do NOT breathe. As a result, I find that I can spot a person that will smell if they come near to me on the train or bus. Even at Saks, rich women come in from Europe who smell funky and they can afford to clean their clotheing after they wear it, but they don’t! Why is that? Does anyone in the HIVE have an answer to save us from the stink? FOOEY!

  5. Why do April and Elizabeth have “Trends I hope will never come back,” and “Trends you hope never come back.” Which ones do they hope WILL come back?

  6. Current trends I like: midi skirts (tall ladies thank you for this trend), flats, animal prints, high-waisted pants, straight-leg jeans, 5-inch inseam shorts
Current trends I don’t like: athleisure. I hate it. ripped jeans. polyester everything.
Trends I wish would come back: I guess I just sort of wear what I want, so I don’t have a great answer, but I wish there were more almond-toe shoes in this life.
Trends I hope will never come back: skinny brows, low-cut jeans

  7. Current trends I like: Tie-front tees. Fun detailing on tops. High rise pants, because they usually fit like a mid-rise on me! Block heels. I’m not a huge fan of the muddy colors that are in style at the moment.
Current trends I don’t like: The super sculpted eyebrow look. Contoured makeup. Drapey tops because they look like crap on me. Boyfriend blazers.
Trends I wish would come back: I keep hearing bootcuts are coming back but haven’t seen the evidence yet.
Trends I hope will never come back: Low-rise anything.

  8. Current trends I like: Midi skirts/dresses, clear framed glasses, crop tops
Current trends I don’t like: Cold shoulders, anything with ruffles, flats, block heels, big/bushy eyebrows, dewy makeup/highlighter, athleisure, oddly long shorts
Trends I wish would come back: Acid washed jeans, everything neon, crop/one-shoulder sweatshirts, giant high boots, cut-offs/short shorts
Trends I hope will never come back: Stripey highlights, bedazzled jeans, butterfly clips, one shoulder tops, halter tops (basically the late 90s/early 00s)

  9. The hate for the low rise pants makes me sad. But mostly because I have such a short torso that low rise pants fit me like normal pants and mid-rise pants come up past my belly button and are uncomfortable.

    1. Yes!!! I have a short torso (but long limbs, ugh) and low-rise hit just below my belly button. I’m also hour-glass shaped, which is of course exaggerated by the shortness, so waists are generally too big.

  10. Current trends I like: Midi-Skirts, I’ve always liked them.
Current trends I don’t like: Cold shoulder, ruffles (I’m not 5), handkerchief hems (why are they still around?), microbladding
Trends I wish would come back: Tops not in super sheer material, darts/structure in tops.
Trends I hope will never come back: Low rise pants, big hair

  11. Trends I like: block heels, work dresses/tailored dresses with blazers, tunic lengths tops over skinny pants/jeans, great tote bags
Dislike: crop tops, leggings as pants, extremely dark/fake looking brows, Kardashian contouring, vegan and gluten-free everything
Come back: if jeans tucked into boots are out, I need it back (because I do it anyway)
Never: hair bows, jelly sandals, acid wash, UGGs with shorts, brown/black lipstick

    1. why would you hate on gluten free? walk a mile with me, in my gluten intolerant shoes, where every slice of pizza results in an immediate and unpleasant trip to the toilet. In this world, there is food I can actually eat! And yet, you can still have your whole gluteny pizza. Why can’t we both have options? #allpizzasmatter

  12. Current trends I like: Gray jeans. Booties with everything. Midi skirts (I am tall and they look fabulous). Pattern mixing. Animal prints.
Current trends I don’t like: Pretty much all denim right now – ripped, step hems, kick flares. Tied T-shirts. Cropped tops. Contouring. Overdone brows.
Trends I wish would come back: Sign me up for the tall boots again (so much warmer than booties). Statement necklaces.
Trends I hope will never come back: Strapless everything — there was a time in the 00s when you couldn’t find a cocktail dress that wasn’t strapless. I hope this one stays in the garbage. Low-rise pants. Trucker hats. Velour track suits. Goodness, the early 2000s were a really bad time for fashion.

  13. Current trends I like: Wide leg trousers, wedge and block heels, high waisted pants
Current trends I don’t like: Bell sleeves and ruffles–designers seem to put them on everything and I like a more streamlined silhouette. synthetic fabrics (is there a cotton shortage or something?)
Trends I wish would come back: Lining in dresses, tailoring & darts. Everything is so flimsy now and even workwear is super casual.
Trends I hope will never come back: Peplum, tube tops, low rise pants

  14. Current trends I like: Softer stretchier business pants.
Current trends I don’t like: Bell sleeves, HATE them. Look awful and you cant put a blazer or jacket over them.
Trends I wish would come back: French Cuffs
Trends I hope will never come back: Leggings with the heel strap, were they called stirrups? Cant remember but they were awful.

  15. Current trends I like: Wide-leg pants, especially ankle-length, neutral earth tone colored everything, flats, jumpsuits, high rise pants with tucked-in tops, minimal dresses, linen outfits, block heels, CAFTANS! for the weekend/beach/lounging at home, obviously not work or even most places in public.
Current trends I don’t like: Overalls, ankle length flared pants (the dreaded “kick flare”), super wide boxy tops – I like them on other people but they are so unflattering on my body, leggings as pants, Lily Pulitzer style bright patterns and neon colors,
Trends I wish would come back: Seersucker – I’m never sure why people don’t wear this more in the heat of summer
Trends I hope never come back: Peplum tops, trucker hats, velour suits, flared or worse bellbottom jeans

    1. Cold shoulder top with thong bottom and knee socks. Seriously, do not like cold shoulder look
      at all ever.
