Is it normal for your side effects from a birth control pill to get worse over time? I’ve been on this particular iteration of the pill for about 3 years now (I was on another pill before that but it gave me chaotic mood swings). I’ve been fine and generally happy with it but lately I’ve found that my periods are getting worse (more cramps) and I’m really emotional in between packs. Like crying in my office for no real reason emotional. I don’t know if this is just in my head or if it’s worth it to go see my doctor to try a new pill.
So Completely and Totally Worth It. Yes, it is normal for your reaction to change, because your hormone levels can change. You might just be in a period where your body is changing. Definitely talk to your doctor. You shouldn’t have to just put up with this.
And for some additional unsolicited advice, I started having trouble with every pill my doctor tried, and after a few she finally suggested we give up and go with the Mirena IUD, and (if you haven’t noticed from my prolific posts) I super love it and I don’t have reactions to the hormones anymore, and I highly recommend asking your doctor about it. Hope you figure it out and feel better!
+1 on the Mirena IUD. 1.5 years later and I’m still loving mine!
And I know people who have had terrible, terrible experiences with IUDs. All this is to say, you should definitely talk to your doctor about what is best for you.
I specifically said “ask your doctor about it”
She never said you didn’t. Be calm.
Talk to your doctor. I was on Depo Provera in college and loved it for the first year. The subsequent 6 months, however, were terrible. It really affected my mood and I think I was borderline depressed. When I switched birth control it was like night and day.
When I was in my late 20’s, the same thing happened. The pill just wasn’t helping the way it used to. I did a bunch of research, went to my doctor & discussed the changes with her & we decided on a new pill. Everything has been pretty good since.
Absolutely it’s possible. Your hormone levels change over time and the medication can effect you in different ways. I was on the pill (several types) for 10 years until recently in my mid-thirties. It’s a long story why I quit but basically once I hit my mid-thirties I had some side effects that made the pill a no-go. I have been off of OCP’s for 6 months and I cannot tell you how amazing I feel. My emotions are stable, no headaches, I feel great. All those years I thought it was “my normal,” but if I had known I would have thought twice about being on it. I know it’s not the right path for everyone, just giving my two cents.
I love these shoes! How fun.
I have a similar pair in purple and get a surprising amount of wear out of them, especially on grumpy mornings.
Does anyone wear wide leg “soft pants” as a pool coverup? Any recommendations ? Nearing 50 with a little extra weight I thought this was a trend my coworkers would pay me to bypass. But in a light cotton they might be my new poolside best purchase all year! Stores/ brands /thoughts? Thanks!
Not sure you’ll see this, but I like the linen beach pants from Victoria’s Secret. I generally wear them as casual summer pants, but the pictures show them with swimsuits. They’re fairly thin and the lighter colors tend to be a little see-through, so watch out for that. For a thicker option, Old Navy has some linen pants, but they have a cottony/stretchy foldover waistband so they may not be great if they get wet.
check out hard tail pants from nordstrom, they are very nice and have a lot of great reviews
Yay! One of my first big projects that I’m leading is coming in on-time and UNDER budget!
Go me!
Feel free to brag about yourself, too!
Got my first raise today! Have a few things to continue to work on, but all in all, they like me, they really like me!
And the apartment complex I’ve been semi obsessed with is calling me about availability after work. Whoo!
Yay! Coffee Break! I love Coffee Break and these Flat’s! They look like Fun, but I can NOT wear flat’s @ work b/c the manageing partner want’s me to look good in case any actueal or potential cleint’s come in, and he also FORBIDS flat’s in court, b/c he know’s how much the judge (his freind) like’s ladie’s with pretty leg’s (gam’s according to the judge). Beside’s, according to Dad, I am not tall enough to wear flat’s without looking dumpy. FOOEY on Dad. He is not much taller then me!
As for the OP, Kudo’s! It is good to be a success at what you do. That is what leaning in is all about, so feel free to lean in, but just don’t lean over to much b/c no one care’s what you did for them yesterday===>> they all want to know what WILL you do for them today and tomorrow!!!!! That is why I too am good for the future—I have a lot of billeing’s and new cleint’s comeing in weekeley, so the manageing partner has NO complaint’s about me. Word got around, thank’s to the judge, that I am a WC uberwizard, and that cleint’s should think about hiring me if they need WC defense. As a result, we have picked up 6 new large account’s since February, all from the garment and restrunt businesses! YAY!!!!! And they all ask for ME by name, so the manageing partner will NOT be abel to weasel away from re-evalueating my salary and bonus this year. Dad has already worked up a excel spreadsheet QUANTIFYEING how much this will mean for the firm and it’s busness. He has NOT told me how much my “portable’s” are worth and will be worth, but he think’s that preliminaryily I should be able to get an increased draw of about $180,000/year, plus about $150,000 additional bonuses, based on the number of cases I am bringeing in and my Partnership Agreement. I have NO idea how he got tothese numbers, but he will be meeting with (and prooveing these numbers to) the manageing partner next month, when my 6 month review come’s up.
Dad tells me that I should NOW be abel to afford the maintnence on the new apartement (which STILL is to big), but I am tired of fighting dad. If he think’s I should get a 3 bedroom to attract a worthy suitor, then mabye he is right. I need a guy with MONEY to marry me so that I can have kid’s in a coupel of years and retire to a life of leisure. With this nice new place, I think I could snare a rich guy who is not a doofus, and I would not mind having sex with him so that we can procreate together. I hope this idea work’s b/c I am no longer a cute little girl anymore. I see age lines around my eyes, and my tuchus is a mess. I need to find and MARRY a guy NOW, before I become a complete mess. FOOEY!
I just got a final-round interview for a potentially great job! The location isn’t ideal, but the organization and position are exactly what I’d be hoping for. I really need to get out of my current position and have been feeling so hopeless about my job search–obviously there’s no guarantee that I’ll get this one, but at least it’s a glimmer of hope. I seriously needed this SO MUCH.
Congratulations! Hope it goes well!
I finished collecting dissertation data yesterday (after six months of surveys, interviews and focus groups). Pushing forward!
Oh good this person is back.
I was diagnosed with prediabetes and I was wondering if I am not alone.
I was about 50 pounds overweight and since the diagnosis I have lost about 10 pounds through diet and a very active vacation where we hiked through the mountains every day.
I am in midlaw (with big law expectations & pay). I hope to keep to my diet and workout 3-5 days per week. My diet is now mostly vegan, with legumes and lentils (sometimes low fat dairy or fish) for fat and protein.
But I only a few weeks in and it’s exhausting! I have about 10 more pounds to go to lose the recommended 10% to avoid diabetes plus another 30 to get to a more healthy weight! I feel so overwhelmed.
Thank you!
Since you’re reducing your animal protein, maybe consider an iron supplement to help keep your energy up? Is that what you mean by “it’s exhausting”?
If vegan, you should take a vitamin b12 supplement. Is your diet from Dr. Barnard’s book? “Reversing diabetes,” it helped my dad control blood sugar when he switched to Dr. Barnard’s suggested vegan diet.
Actually, my diet is more hobbled together based on what I know I will be able to stick to. None of the diets I found or that my doctor suggested seemed doable for me.
Right now, my goals are 5 servings of veggies, 3 servings of fruit (before mid afternoon), no-sugar oatmeal for breakfast, a salad with legumes for lunch, and something hot with legumes or lentils for dinner. Snacks are veggies, edamame, and some fruit. No more than 3 drinks per week and lots of water.
I will look at that book, thank you! My diet probably isn’t the most nutritionally balanced!
Not a nutritionist, but I would recommend more protein in the morning. Nut butters, quinoa oatmeal, things like that. When I work out and don’t have a good bit of protein with breakfast, I feel very off my game.
Since switching to protein breakfasts, I am significantly happier between breakfast and lunch, and less likely to eat everything and anything in front of me. My protein breakfasts are usually egg and milk-product based, though. I’d love some ideas for good protein-heavy, but not animal-based breakfasts!
For evidence, I’d take a look at today, when I had only grapes and toast for breakfast, and kept getting up to go eat the donut holes someone brought in, unlike last week, when I didn’t partake at all after my cottage cheese, fruit, and almonds breakfast.
Thank you! I have a protein shake that I actually like that I take after a workout. I will move it to the morning.
Look at Dr. Barnard’s web page — free recipes (print the PDF version), resources, research, etc.
I had gestational diabetes and had to monitor my carbohydrate intake and test my blood sugar four times a day. At least for me, I found it hard to stick with my primarily vegan diet. The beans or lentils I typically ate for dinner had too many carbs in the portions I typically ate and made my blood sugar too high. I had to add in some chicken and fish. Also, fruit often caused a spike in my blood sugar, so I had to limit what I ate and when. It was hard! But, the changes I made during that time have stuck with me (though I do eat more fruit now) and I have lost about 40 additional pounds.
Dr. Barnard has a lot of resources online, too, including this free and super-easy recipe booklet. I printed it & put it in a notebook and have quite a few favorites in there: http://www.pcrm.org/pdfs/health/diabetes/Diabetes_Recipes.pdf
Lots of other ideas and research here: http://www.pcrm.org/health/diabetes-resources/the-vegan-diet-how-to-guide-for-diabetes
Hmmm. I hadn’t though of that. I am trying to eat lots of broccoli and dark greens but you are right, I am probably not getting enough iron!
For those meals where you aren’t doing a vegan menu, are eggs an option? Easy protein and they have some iron and fat.
Yes. Eggs can be a migraine trigger for me, so I limit them in my diet normally to 2 eggs once per week. I “save” those for weekend brunch.
This is probably too late, but if you eat a lot of legumes, they are a good source of iron. It is harder to become iron deficient than it seems.
That’s amazing progress. Really, not many people could do that! Especially with vacation and travel.
You will adjust once it becomes more routine and it will stop feeling so exhausting.
Thank you!
Yes, you are inspiring!
Vitamin B supplements can help with energy too, especially when dieting while you’re trying to get used to less availability of quick energy in your body from simpler sugars, which it sounds like you’re mostly eliminating.
Vitamin B. Yes. I did eliminate all simple sugars! No coffee (I can’t stand it without sugar and milk), no sugar in my oatmeal, no more PB&Js (my favorite dinner), and no more trips to the candy jar. I feel better overall but I am ready to throw my veggie snack tray through the window!
I would highly recommend meeting a nutritionist and having htem help you map out a do-able and balance meal plan based on what you know you like and dislike. My mom was diagnosed with prediabetes and the nutritionist was invaluable for her to figure out a diet to lose weight and not eat the things she wasn’t supposed to eat. She lost ~30lbs through diet and then started swimming and walking and her blood sugar levels are in the normal range, and she’s been able to maintain this for a year! It is absolutely worth the work to not progress into diabetes, and it sounds like you are very strong and committed. Go to a nutritionist and let them do some of the work for you. Good luck!
Thank you! I have a call with my doctor in a few weeks. I will ask him for a referral to a nutritionist (I have Kaiser so I need a referral for any specialists).
Yes, if you’re in an urban area, a diabetes nutritionist/educator would be a worthwhile expert.
Yes! Someone who specializes in diabetes would be good–if not a must. It’s amazing what some health professionals do not know about diabetes.
My mom was told by the doctor that she was pre-diabetic a couple of weeks before Easter. Her solution was to cut as much added sugar as possible in her diet at home. She would also try for more vegetables, and less processed meats.
One thing that she found helped her was to make a bowl of microwaved oatmeal (just oats and milk) with cinnamon, topped with blueberries after microwave in the evening – it gave her a filling evening meal to “snack on” when she would have gone for more unhealthy options.
When she was invited to a dinner party, she resolved to eat as normal during that time (though still minding her portion) – and have a small piece of cake when it was served.
She also had a couple of pieces of chocolate at Easter, but nothing compared to what she would have had normally.
At the follow-up, she was back to normal levels. She is determined to continue with it, as she has seen results and weight loss. She said that if she hadn’t seen either, and been told by the doctor that there was no effect, it would have been more difficult to continue with it. Now she has seen the point in the change in her eating habits.
Thank you! Yes, my last resort is portion control when faced with no choice except for “normal” foods. Honestly, portion control does not work for me. Luckily, I do like vegan foods naturally– I just now have a better excuse to be a picky eater!
I am so glad your mom found the diet that works for her and that her levels are back to normal! That gives me so much hope!
Nice job. You are doing amazingly well.
I wanted to second the other poster who mentioned that you should take a B12 supplement if your diet is primarily vegan – ask the nutritionist or your doctor about it. Just buy it over the counter. Several of my vegan friends (including doctors!) have become B12 deficient and the symptoms are diverse and some quite severe. Do not overlook this.
Otherwise… way to go!
Congrats – it sounds like you’ve made great progress! I think anytime you change up your diet, it is exhausting because you have to actually think about what you are going to eat as opposed to relying on some go-tos. However, two years after losing 30 lbs, I’ve developed new go-tos, so it does get easier with time. Make sure you are doing everything you can on the weekends to set yourself up for success – get some extras ready for the freezer, prep ingredients during the weekend, etc. You sound like you’re doing really well, so keep up the good work!
I am pre-diabetic as well. Sometimes I do well with it, other times not so much.
One thing to discuss/consider with your doctor is metformin. It is technically prescribed to treat diabetes, but my OBGYN and endo prescribed it to me to help with PCOS and pre-diabetes symptoms, and it does help, especially with what I describe as the “hungry crankies”. The only thing to be aware of is that since it is technically considered a diabetes medication, even though I was taking it off label as a non-diabetic, it automatically bumps me into the “has diabetes” more expensive category for getting health and life insurance, even though I am taking it in order to prevent myself from developing full blown diabetes.
As far as the exhaustion goes, one thing to consider is to come up with a list of safe and easy foods that you like, so that when you just can’t face the idea of cooking from scratch you at least reach for a healthy, fast on your diet option, as opposed to a fast-food drive through or quick bowl or pasta type option. It seems like oatmeal is a good quick choice that works for you, find some other things as well – consider making a list and putting it on the fridge, or stocking your freezer with either extra portions of your go-tos or finding some frozen options at Trader Joes that are either part of your diet plan, or at least a less-bad option for stressful and busy weeks.
For a quick and easy way to add some protein in your breakfast, stir in a spoonful of no-sugar peanut butter or almond butter. I’ve also found that when I’m craving PB&J, oatmeal made with natural peanut butter and fruit hits that spot pretty well.

Just wondering if anyone here from a non-US common law jurisdiction has taken the New York or California bar, or both? In your experience, 1. how difficult is it to do this while working full-time and 2. has it helped your career? TIA!
I just bought these shoes this weekend in the hot pink! They are beautiful. FYI – the ankle strap is removable so you can wear the shoes with and without the strap!
