·

As most of you know, we round up all of our Hall of Famers into our Wardrobe Essentials for Work — I thought I'd take a quick run through some of the pricier wardrobe essentials for work and see if I could find some great deals today.

(Please feel free to use this post as an open thread!)

  • the olive coat (Ted Baker) is down to $367 today (30% off at Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom)
  • the blue coat (reader favorite Babaton brand ) are down as low as $138 (Aritizia sale, up to 50% off everything!)

  • (I looked but didn't see any noteworthy sales for Burberry or Canada Goose — what other coat deals are you on the hunt for?)

Great Deals on Cashmere

Some of the classic cashmere sweaters for work (as of 2024) include Nordstrom Cashmere, Quince ($50!), Vince, J.Crew, Naadam, Talbots, Lands' End, and Brooks Brothers. If you're looking for something fancier try TSE, Loro Piana, Akris, Autumn Cashmere, or (more casual) Jenni Kayne.

  • Halogen cashmere (the blue sweater) is down as low as $57 today — great budget pick.
  • J.Crew cashmere (gray sweater) is down as low as 50% + 10% off today (and free shipping)!
  • Everlane cashmere rarely goes on sale but they're offering 25% off select styles; the pictured cashmere crew (gray) comes down to $75.

  • TSE – Take an extra 25% off markdowns

Some of our favorite office pashminas as of 2024 include ones from J.Crew, Nordstrom, and this super affordable one from Amazon. If you're looking for more of a ruana jacket, I highly recommend the Brooks Brothers' ones!

  • pink (far left) – Lots of their “pure cashmere wraps” are down from $170 to $84.50 — and go towards the $50 off every $200 offer.
  • blue (far right) – MANY ruanas are included in the Brooks Brothers sale from $598 to $299 – this is a great deal. If you have a hard to fit woman in your life this is great; I'd say it works anywhere from size S-3X. It's more of a coat, though; very heavy and elegant.
  • (See our cashmere list above for more ideas for splurge-worthy wraps!)

  1. Has anyone actually gone on the Mayo diet? How does it compare to Noom/WW/etc?

    1. I can’t answer about being on the Mayo diet specifically but I did look into it. I think it may depend a lot on your current habits and goals. I’ve been on the heavier side of a normal BMI most of my life and after 3 kids was solidly overweight. I’d gained 5 pounds per kid and then COVID hit and I was up 25lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight (which was technically normal but heavier than ideal for my frame). I started WW in September and am down 22lbs and can still drink wine and have dinner out (ha– well, take-out) with no changes to my (nonexistant) exercise routine. I set my goal to lose 35 pounds and this is the first time I feel like I can really do it. I hate counting calories and meal tracking, so I ended up on the WW blue plan. I think my laziness works in my favor because I prefer to eat 0 point foods so I don’t have to track them. Once I hit that 35lb mark, I’ll worry about starting an exercise routine that I can stick with. I’m not crazy enough to think I can do that while homeschooling 3 kids and also working remotely in a pandemic.

  2. I know a few people posted about migraines in the last few months so I wanted to post a revelation that I had. You can get motion sick from working on a computer. Especially so if you are using multiple screens. Now that we are WFH I am doing everything electronic. I was using two screens, often with a Zoom on my Surface in front of me. I was also scrolling on my phone in my downtime and watching TV at night.

I got such a bad “migraine” once that I woke up and vomited. After a bunch of research I figured out it was the screens. I now stick to one screen as much as possible and wear motion sickness bands when I have to multi-screen. My “migraines” are 90% better!

    1. Yeah, I’ve never been able to use multiple screens, or even a really wide screen for this reason. It’s too bad, since it would make work a lot easier, but it’s just not worth it. I have a binocular vision disorder that makes me especially sensitive to this, but I assume other people might have trouble too.

    1. I’d say no, because the color would wash me out, cowl necks never behave exactly how I want them to, and I most definitely do not need a hand wash or dry clean only layering piece :)

    2. Oooh pretty! That said, I would worry it would be so thin as to be see-through in a light color. I do find you can hand wash silk on the delicate cycle as long as you commit to ironing. You can guess how often I wear my silk/dry-clean only/need ironing pieces these days…
I’d go stalk the Brooks Brothers sale instead, a nice wool/silk shell is also washable in the delicate cycle and I find those are more wearable day to day if you’re into a preppy/Shiv Roy on succession aesthetic.

    3. It’s pretty and the subtle pattern is unusual, but it’s not $95 worth of pretty and unusual.

    4. I’d say no because it’s 100% poly and dry clean. For that price you can easily find silk tops, which I machine wash, hand dry, then steam. It actually looks a lot like a viscose top I got at COS for like $35 last year.

    5. I also say no. From a distance I couldn’t make out the pattern. I had to zoom way in. I think it would look odd over a Zoom or from a distance at work.

    6. I say get it! I might even get it…I am very fair and it would compliment my coloring. I also think the Atlas print is really unique! I’d wear it with Charlotte Tilbury’s Instant Eye Pillow Talk eyeshadow palette (the long one), which comes out coral/gold on me. I’d also add some of my favorite rose gold jewelry.

    7. That is my favorite style of top and the draping is very flattering on my small bust/wide, square shoulders. But for that price I’d expect silk and not polyester. If you are in love with the print, know the cut fits you well, and have the money to spare, then go for it. Otherwise I would suggest shopping around for either a silk version or a polyester one whose price tag reflects the material more realistically.

  3. Today’s my first day back at work after a close family member died from Covid. I am not doing great. I have made it through the day, but I feel like I did not present particularly well in meetings. And it turns out that I have zero patience for casual Covid chat at the moment, even good things like progress on the vaccines. My immediate team knows what happened, but most other people don’t — another odd side effect of everyone working remotely.

    1. I was in your shoes in October and understand the frustration with casual COVID chit chat. I am so sorry for your loss. Don’t beat yourself up over any of it. Just get through it.

    2. I’m so sorry for your loss.
If it would help and you feel comfortable with it – is there a trusted member of your immediate team who could help spread the word to other folks you work with? Something simple/not too detailed like “[name] recently lost a family member to Covid – she doesn’t want to talk about it, but please be aware that covid-related stuff is hard for her right now.” We’ve done that a couple of times for staff and it’s helped.

  4. Ugh. My mom believed someone from Amazon was calling her and only got stopped from giving them her bank account info because the bank told her not to when she called them on her cell. In the meantime, she let them email her and started downloading malware. I’m waiting now for an IT friend to call back so I can drop off her laptop.

I was able to get her to sign up for Lifelock. I don’t know what else to do. I’ve given her the lecture on not giving out info like your social security number, credit card info or bank account to anyone who calls or emails. But clearly it didn’t sink in.

I feel so helpless. She’s smarter than this and it’s just so darn frustrating. She admitted she was on the phone with them for like an hour and a half. I don’t even know what info she’s given them now and she doesn’t recall. I’m so mad I could spit and trying not to show it.

    Happy Monday!

    1. Don’t be too hard on her, or next time she won’t tell you at all because she’ll be scared of your reaction. I doubt she did it solely to frustrate you.
