If you haven't bought your mom a Mother's Day gift yet (or a gift for any mother you're buying for this year), we figured you could use a post today on gift ideas for Mother's Day. We drew from our post “What Things Do You Own That You Heartily Recommend As Gift Ideas?” from late last year — and if you haven't seen it, definitely check out the comments for some great ideas for any occasion, in all sorts of categories. This year, we're getting my mom a ticket to Hamilton for a combination birthday/Mother's Day gift — an option that was mentioned several times in the gift ideas post linked above. My mom, my husband, and I are actually going on Mother's Day, which wasn't really on purpose but will be nice. Pictured: Short Sleeve Sharkbite Hem Pajama Tee & Grosgrain Trim Crop Pajama Pants
We've recommended Soma's Cool Nights sleepwear line before — Kat mentioned it in pajamas for grownups, for one — and several readers have praised them in the comments over the years. They're designed to be soft, comfortable, and breathable, and to feel cool against your skin. (Note: These are nice for any mom but are especially good for older women you know who are going through perimenopause/menopause.) The line offers separates, sleepshirts, chemises, nightgowns, and robes in sizes XS–XXL. Prices range from $21 (sale price) to $78; the pictured tee and pants are each $38. Online orders may not make it in time (unless you pay $16.95 for two-day shipping); otherwise, visit one of the 300 Soma stores in the U.S. Other Reader Recommendations for Clothing Gifts: Barefoot Dreams Circle Cardigan ($77-$116) (also at Amazon) Gap's Softspun line ($24–$79) Lululemon leggings ($98–$148) Pottery Barn classic terry bathrobe ($95)Mother’s Day Gift Idea – Category: Beauty
Pictured: Kiehl's Creme de Corps lotion
Another reader favorite is Kiehl’s Creme de Corps line, and this is the body lotion from that collection. It moisturizes with cocoa butter and sesame oil and is paraben-free and not tested on animals. It's a bit pricey; at Nordstrom, prices range from $11–$78 for 2.5- to 33.8-oz. sizes. (Right now there's a Gift with Purchase — four samples — with a Kiehl's purchase of $85+ at Nordstrom.) It is also available at Sephora at the same price range. {related: Readers' Favorite Cruelty-Free Beauty Products} Other Reader Recommendations for Beauty Gifts: Ice roller (example: StackedSkincare ice roller, $30) Aquis hair towels ($30–$45) Amika Polished Perfection Straightening Brush ($120)Mother’s Day Gift Ideas – Category: Kitchen
Pictured: Cuisinart 5-in-1 Griddler
If you know a mom who likes kitchen gadgets but doesn't have many — or doesn't have a lot of room for them in her kitchen — the Cuisinart Griddler would be a great option. It can be use as a contact grill, panini press, full grill, full griddle, and half grill/half griddle. The nonstick cooking plates are removable and reversible — and dishwasher-safe! Amazon has several Griddler models available; scroll down on each product page to see a chart comparing the one you're viewing to three other models. Cuisinart's website has more details on the options, as well as videos. The pictured model is $65.99 at Amazon and eligible for Prime. Other Reader Recommendations for Kitchen Gifts: Quarter sheets (baking sheets) (example: Nordic Ware Quarter Sheet, $22.99 for 2) Emile Henry pie dishes ($27–$55) Swiss Diamond nonstick frying pan ($59–$109)Mother’s Day Gift Ideas – Category: Books

This book, which was published in 2018, has racked up the accolades: It was a finalist for awards from the National Book Critics Circle, was one of the New York Times Book Review‘s 10 Best Books of 2018, and was an Amazon Editors' pick for the Best Book of 2018 — just to name a few. It even made Barack Obama’s “Favorite Books of the Year” list. And of the almost 7,000 (!) reviews at Amazon, more than 90% are 4- or 5-star. The hardcover is $14 at Amazon, and the paperback is $20; both are eligible for Prime. This very popular throw blanket at Nordstrom is 50″ x 60″ and is easy-care — machine wash, tumble dry. It's available in tons of colors (25, to be exact — including olive green, teal, and dark gray), has an average customer review (from 1,000+ reviews) that is close to 5 stars, and is $39.50. Nordstrom's two-day shipping is a reasonable $12. Other Reader Recommendations for Home Gifts: Society6 throw pillows ($29) (and trays and more!) What are some unexpected, not life-changing but still good to know about physical changes you went through as you aged? I’m 38. I still feel pretty good, but I take longer to recover from indulgences and drinking, and I notice that how I feel is hugely affected by what I eat, my water consumption, and how active I am.
Biggest appearance-related change this decade 30: I have deep bags under my eyes and my jowls feel droopy. I also gain weight much more easily. I really have to watch what I eat in a way I didn’t in my 20s.

I can’t sleep late. I mean, physically I am capable of it and in theory I greatly enjoy it, but my body acts hungover from it. Headache, lethargy, etc. I used to be able to sleep late when I was feeling ill, overly stressed, etc., but now it seems to hurt more than help.
I need real, solid meals at regular times. I can’t just graze through the day or get busy and forget supper. My body stages a revolt.

You need to stop drinking. I am your age and I walk 10000 steps a day, and try to get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. You are not as young as you were in your 20s, and if you don’t take care of yourself, you will look even dumpier in a few years. Thats why Grandma Leyeh wants me to get married now, while I am still attractive to men. She said if I wait more then 3 years, only schlubby men will marry me, and then just to have s-x on demand. They have another thing comeing if they think that I will become a s-x machine for them, just b/c they will marry me. FOOEY!

Lower stomach acid. It’s really hard to get enough iron, B12, vitamin D, etc. if you don’t have enough stomach acid to digest your food well. And the symptoms are pretty much the same as the symptoms of excess stomach acid, so I was initially making it worse by taking antacids. I think this cropped up early for me because I also tend to have low thyroid levels, but the doctor made it sound like it happens to most of us eventually.

Keihl’s still tests on animals in China.
“We at Kiehl’s do not conduct animal testing on our products or ingredients, nor ask others to test on our behalf, ****except when required by law.**** As we continue to expand globally and reach our customers around the world, it is our practice to do our part towards advancing the science of safety and validated alternative methods that eliminate the need or requirement for any animal testing globally. In 1989, our parent company, L’Oreal voluntarily stopped using animal testing for the evaluation of its entire range of finished products. The company has invested more than $1 billion over the last 25 years to develop innovative, alternative methods to animal testing, particularly in the area of reconstructed tissue development. L’Oreal and Kiehl’s are totally committed to a future without tests on animals.”
