Threadjack: is it crazy to buy “tall” pants if you’re short and just have them hemmed? I picked up a great wool suit jacket at BR on Monday, and they have the matching pants online in my size… but only in “tall”. (I’m decidedly short at 5’4″). The pants are Martin fit, which is a pretty straight leg, so I don’t think I have to worry about the “knee” falling at the wrong place.
Have I overlooked something? Has anyone done this successfully? I can’t think of any reason why it wouldn’t work…
This would be a crazy cheap “fat” suit, even after alterations (I got the jacket for $30 in store, and the pants would be about $40 after the 30% off promo) that I would use transitionally until I’m back down to my usual size, so “good enough” is really all I’m going for.

I don’t have time to click through and see if BR lists detailed measurements for their tall pants, but be aware that sometimes it’s not just the leg length that changes. For example, sometimes the rise is slightly longer, or where the wearer’s knee is “supposed” to hit is farther away from the top of the leg (this mattered more when flared pants were in style) for the tall pants.
(FWIW, this is why I’m often sized out of petite pants even though I’m only 5’4″ – I’m long waisted for my height and so the rise is often too short for me!)

read too fast – obviously you already thought about the knee issue! As a transitional suit, I’d say to go for it.

Thanks! I don’t know why I was so on the fence about this. If it doesn’t work out, it’s a pretty cheap mistake! I’m going to pull the trigger!

My martin pants still come in a little at the knee (I own regular inseam and petities, I’m 5’3 and they both work for me). But a tailor could do a littler tapering if the knee is off.

I’m 5’2″ and have bought Tall sized pants before that I chopped off and hemmed. I am long waisted so have never worried about a Tall sized rise being disproportionate. So long as the pants are a straight legged style you should be fine.
