I was just updating links in one of our older posts on the best online glasses stores for women and thought it might be fun to discuss: What are your favorite online stores for glasses for women? Have you found yourself preferring eyeglasses to contacts this year? If you've ordered any for home try-on, have you felt OK about the turnaround time to send things back?

(Psst: If you have FSA dollars to use before the end of the year, I believe many of these stores are eligible!)

Our Latest Favorite Spots for Online Glasses for Women

As of 2024, some of our favorite latest spots for buying women's eyeglasses online include Warby Parker, Zenni, EyebuyDirect, GlassesUSA, and 39dollarglasses.

My search for the best Online Glasses for Women

As I've written about before, I've been careful with my contacts use ever since I nearly damaged my corneas a thousand years ago. (Do NOT rub your eyes a ton, ladies!) Since working from home I've been wearing a ton of glasses — and since having kids (my first son managed to break two pairs of eyeglasses by his second birthday, dangit), I've preferred cheap eyeglasses.

I've experimented a lot with online eyeglass shopping. Of the various stores and the various pairs of eyeglasses I've bought from over the years, MOST have been fine. One pair was a bit weird — I couldn't quite put my finger on what was wrong but I felt like the prescription was off, and I got headaches wearing them. I had a lot of other glasses at the time to swap out, so it wasn't a big deal (and I think I'd paid less than $25 for the pair).

Still, I hesitated buying online eyeglasses for my youngest son because I wanted an optometrist to, you know, verify that everything was correct. The first time we got him eyeglasses they cost close to $400 — and when they arrived, the store looked at me like I was crazy when I said I wanted the optometrist to look at him wearing them. Because kids' glasses are intentionally flexible, they tend to scratch super easily — and sure enough, my son had scratched his $400 pair of eyeglasses within weeks.

I found an almost identical frame on Zenni to the fancy one we'd bought through the eye doctor, and for about 10% of the original price. I've since bought him prescription sunglasses, and more recently he's been into tinted lenses (he has a bit of light sensitivity, I think), all of which are a-OK to me if the eyeglasses are $26-$35 a pop. (Thankfully he's old enough now to tell me when his prescription is wrong or if he doesn't like the way the glasses make him feel.)

I just got a new prescription — it's such a big leap (-4.75 to -6!) that I'm a bit worried the prescription is somehow incorrect. So when I was ordering some super cheap eyeglasses for my youngest from Zenni, I bit the bullet and bought myself some super cheap, lightweight “house frames” in the new prescription, as well as a pair of big black prescription sunglasses, because why not.

I will say that I was surprised about the number of online options for the lenses that Zenni offers — everything increases the price, of course, but you can get lighter weight lenses, antifog lenses (so important for the mask situation!), anti-smudge lenses, polarized lenses, tinted lenses (any color you want, truly), graduated tinted lenses, and transitional lenses — it's very cool.

But I'm still on the hunt for some cuter “people glasses,” as I call them — good for Zooms or errands or (when we start gathering socially again) for casual social get-togethers.

So ladies, let's discuss — where are your favorite places to get online glasses for women these days? What trendier styles are you a fan of? Rose gold, clear acetate, octagonal frames, crazy big cat eyes… there are a TON of trends right now.

Where I've Bought Online Glasses in the Past:

  • Warby Parker — Most of my “people glasses” have come from here over the years, and I've found a light blue pair looks great on Zoom calls. (I do wish the brand gave you an Amazon-like reminder at the top of each page — “you ordered this frame for home try on four years ago!” I've tried so many frames I keep a spreadsheet of them.)
  • Zenni — I've ordered a ton for my son through here and just ordered my first pairs for myself. (Here's my Zenni kids review!) I also got my husband a pair of non-prescription blue blockers. Note that right now they have collaborations with both Rashida Jones and Cynthia Rowley!
  • 39dollarglasses.com — I believe I got a pair of funky sunglasses from here for myself (no complaint), and there was a pair of prescription sunglasses that I must have bought 10x for my husband, who kept losing them.
  • GlassesUSA — I've bought numerous glasses here over the years; no complaints.
  • Felix & Iris — I've ordered glasses for home try-on from here, but haven't actually pulled the trigger on any.
  • Fetch Eyewear – ditto
  • Dharma & Co – ditto

Other Online Glasses for Women

I haven't tried any of these, but FYI…

Notes on Where to Get Cheap Eyeglasses IRL

  • In-store options at places like Target and Costco (not online, but more affordable than your local optician)
  • FYI: Walmart will fill any prescription in any frame for $40-$99 — I can't find a link to this online, but I heard a rumor and we tested it out with my son's eyeglasses. I believe clear children's lenses were $40; prescription sunglasses and adult lenses started at $99 and went up depending on polarization and so forth.

So let's hear it, readers — what are your favorite online stores for glasses for women? What trendier styles are you a fan of, whether for Zoom calls, workwear, social gatherings, or other situations? Have your eyeglasses habits changed recently?

  1. I’m a hard pass on online glasses shopping. I must have tried on 50 pairs of glasses the last time I got a new pair. Most of them looked absolutely awful, even within a range of parameters around what looks good on my round face shape, etc. I need to go somewhere (or several somewheres!) with a ton of options and try them on.

    1. Same here. IME, the online stores are all about carrying what’s trendy, to the defecit of anything else. My odd face shape does not lend itself to fashion glasses.

I have tried to save money in the past by reusing the frames when my script changes, but the bulk of the insurance allowance goes to that, while little goes to the lenses, so it’s like throwing away a free pair of glasses.

If I had a simple prescription and a generic oval face, I suspect online glasses would work well.

  2. I love Smartbuyeyeglasses–they have a really cool virtual try on option that’s easy to use and super fast shipping). But I have purchased from a bunch of others and been really pleased as well (EZ Contacts, Glasses USA). Sometimes I’ll try on in person at a Lenscrafters and then go online to get the frame. Or purchase a few at Amazon and return what I don’t like and then have Lenscrafters or another eye doc do the glass for me. I can pretty much tell what I’ll like at this point–I’ve come to know what nose width and glass width work best (you can see your measurements on the arm of existing glasses) and I generally stick to a similar style (I like rectangle or cateye, hate nose beds, won’t do circles).

I love Tom Ford. And this has made the difference of a $500 frame being $175 or so–so definitely worth it to me. Sometimes I’ll also purchase a frame I really like in a second color. I think online shopping has kind of spoiled me now. I’m used to having a lot more control over the lenses as well. I usually purchase thinnest, best glare protection, etc. I usually come away with a much nicer lens than the highest offering available at Lenscrafters.

  3. I’ve had good luck at Zenni and Glasses USA. It’s addictive, since the low prices allow a freedom to have multiple pairs in different shapes and colors.

  4. I am not happy with the quality of my Felix and Iris frames. I now stick with traditional optical frame manufacturers and look for an online deal.
