Vince Camuto Faux Wrap Top

The below content is about the 2013 Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale.

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

I've posted the long-sleeved version of this wrap top before, so I'm happy to see they have a cap-sleeved version of it.

Love that high shawl collar (perfect to have just a *bit* peeking out beneath the collar of your blazer), and of course the high neckline and flattering wrap effect. It's part of the Nordstrom Half-Yearly sale going on right now — it was $49, but is now marked to $29.40.

It's available in a ton of colors and prints in regular, petites, and plus sizes, all marked from $14.97 to $49. Nice. Vince Camuto Faux Wrap Top

    3. Alain figaret shirts in 40/10 ….black button down and pale blue collarless button front

Hope it is of use to one of you.

    1. Oh, if it helps…I am a size 10 in boss black and an 8 in lafayette. The above used to fit me perfectly but are all a bit snug on the tummy now…but fine everywhere else.

  2. My office is closing at 1 today! Hello even longer long weekend :)

In the spirit of a holiday weekend and the fact that the weather is mostly nice today anyone want to play what are you wearing? I’ll start… black jersey dress with a pink and blue scarf, funky necklace and flats… plus my green and blue bumblebee earrings

    Happy Friday!

    1. I’m running errands and meeting the parents (eeks) today, I have a Boden printed jersey dress, black tights, and blue wedges.

I bought a jean jacket that I’m on the fence about. I think I’d wear it all summer (Scotland is cold!) but if I wore it the first time around (child of the 1990s), can I do it now?

      1. Absolutely you can! I just got one and I love it; I’m wearing it even more than I expected. And I definitely wore them the first time around.

      2. Wasn’t the “first time” for jeans jackets in the 60s? I think of them as classics that you can always wear.

    2. I decided this morning that I wanted to try the graffic tee and blazer looks. So I’m wearing a white and green M*A*S*H t-shirt with a grey sweatshirt-material blazer over it, dark skinny jeans (all from Old Navy), and brown flats.

    3. I’m wearing a dark denim pencil skirt, black top, and turquoise 3/4 sleeve cardigan with metallic open-toe colehaan wedges and dangly bronze/coral/bone earrings.

    4. Fitted white tee from Nordstrom. Red merino Halogen cardigan. Dark denim yoga jeans (love!). Pink printed tidewater flip flops. Plus black tank watch, silver bangles and silver filigree earrings.

I’m taking a half day and I work for a university.

    5. “Celestial Blue” wrap dress from Lands End, navy patent leather heels from Payless, and a sapphire earring & necklace set from my husband. When I walked into Starbucks this morning, the usual crew was working, and I got a “WOW! You are gorgeous!” from the girls!

    6. Dark trouser jeans with a cobalt blue scoopneck tee, white rumpled cotton blazer, red patent leather flats and a bold red beaded necklace. I’m patriotic.

    7. Black khakis, black t-shirt, grey featherweight sweater, and Iron Fist ballet flats with roses and skulls on them (smile). I’m in the office for the long haul with a midnight briefing deadline, staring longingly at the gorgeous, gorgeous day outside…

    8. Gap boatneck blue/purple/pink/white striped tee, NYDJ trouser jeans, white/coral flats from Talbots, plus silver watch, Cape Cod bracelet, moissanite studs and wedding set. This is my last day in the office for THREE WEEKS so I am trying to close as many projects as I can without bouncing off the walls.

    9. I’m wearing the blue/brown/black patterned dress from Bloomingdale’s that was featured on this website with black slingback pumps and a black cardigan.

    10. Navy blue and burgundy striped maxi skirt, navy blue v neck tee, denim jacket (since it’s so effing cold in DC), and sparkly gold Jack Rogers.

    11. Dark wash skinny jeans, cobalt blue peplum top, black flats and red leather bracelet, and because I am so freaking cold, still wearing the navy and white striped jersey blazer and fuschia scarf I came to work in.

    12. Not at work…wearing a maxi dress with a black and white chevron pattern with a hot pink skinny belt, hot pink earrings that are based on Día de los Muertos flags, a stack of black, pink, white and turquoise bracelets made from telephone wire, and flat black sandals with mother of pearl discs. Overall I fell pretty good!

    13. Casual Friday at my office, AND closing at 2:30! Woot!
I’m wearing dark wash boot cut jeans with a brown belt, pale pink Kenneth Cole Recation Flats with a metallic cap toe, a semi-sheer coral button up blouse (with cami under of course!!) and pale blue dangly earrings. Carrying my favorite navy blue tote with brown trim. Great start to Memorial Day weekend if you ask me!

    14. casual Friday and training day, wheee!

metallic green 14 inch do martens (… yes, i love these mad boots!), grey tights, burgundy skirt, black and white band t-shirt (Front 242) and a black blazer with white detailing.

    15. Red/fuchsia/black/green H&M mirror floral print shift dress, black oversized blazer, black tights, fuchsia Minnetonka moccasins w/ driving shoe sole, dark green jade studs, mociun pyramid studs necklace, brilliant cut (lab-grown) ruby ring.

    16. Maroon fitted blazer, black cashmere shell, black fitted pants (ultra skinny from gap), black CL pumps, oversized gold link necklace, gold pyramid stud earrings, and oversized gold watch. Love casual Fridays!

    17. I have the day off so I am casual. GAP always skinny jeans in camo print, white shirt, Levi’s denim jacket (so yes, I think a denim jacket is a classic!), dark brown high-heeled sandals and dark brown tote. Dangly gold earrings with smoky topaz drops.

  3. Love this top and have a couple cotton tees from this brand that I live in. But cannot stand rayon.

    1. I have this top in the long sleeve and I love it. I get tons of compliments whenever I wear it. Its insanely flattering. I usually don’t like rayon, but this one doesn’t feel or look weird or cheap.

    2. Ditto! I have the long sleeve version in green and it is my No. 1 Favorite shirt to wear under suits. It feels VERY much like jersey not like rayon at all. It is flattering and super comfortable.

  4. My boyfriend lives in Massachusetts and I live in California. We want to get together for three or four days in August somewhere in the U.S. we can each fly to (on Southwest) and meet. He has suggested Chicago, new Orleans, or Houston. I would welcome any suggestions.

    1. Chicago is wonderful in the summertime. I wouldn’t do New Orleans in August if someone paid me to (too hot! and possible hurricanes). Same for Houston. What about Boulder, CO?

      1. Totally agree. I wouldn’t come here in August if I didn’t live here and I wouldn’t do touristy things with someone who was visiting in August. It’s beyond hot and humid. I vote for Chicago.

      2. Born and raised in MA and now living in Houston. It’s gross here in August so I typically tell friends and family to visit only in non-summer months. It sounds like/I imagine New Orleans is similar.

I’m not too familiar with where you can get on Southwest so I don’t have other suggestions, but I visited Chicago in August one year and it was lovely! I agree with another commenter that it will be hot in most places but I would avoid the infamously humid areas for a summer trip.

    2. Can you get to each with a direct flight? That extends your weekend. I would always pick New Orleans. If you wanna get ultra romantic, rent a car go out to Oak Alley Plantation (and yes, I realize this isn’t romantic for everyone ) and rent yourself a cottage for a few nights on the ground.. At night only the renters of the only 4 (!) cottages stay on the grounds – its absolutely magical.

While it’s hot, I don’t really think any of these places in August will be cool and comfortable.

      1. But it’s HOT here in August. Chicago in August is great, but if you want somewhere more romantic or outdoorsy, how about Jackson’s Hole?

    3. As a native Houstonian, I don’t suggest Houston in August. The weather will be 100 degrees plus 100% humidity. Yes, everything will be air conditioned, but the outside will be unbearable. It would actually say ditto to not visiting New Orleans in August for that reason as well – they’ll have 100% humidity in August.

    4. Milwaukee! There is a festival just about every weekend in the summer, you could do brewery tours, you could rent a car and drive up to Door County, take a day trip to Madison.

      1. Wisconsin is great during the summer! I grew up in Madison and lived there until recently, and that is definitely the time to see it. If you like hiking or rock climbing, definitely check out Devil’s Lake state park. It’s about an hour north of Madison with a deep lake surrounded by bluffs. It has some of the best non-mountain rock climbing in the country, and people also scuba dive in the lake. You can camp there too. On the way there from Madison the original Culver’s frozen custard in Sauk City is good, and there’s an incredible sculpture garden called Ever Ever Land off the highway on the way to the park. It’s filled with huge pieces that the sculptor made by welding together scrap metal.

    5. New Orleans is an absolute sauna in August, and Houston is hot as well. Chicago may or may not be sticky but at least there’s a possibility it might be nice. Great culture, great restaurants, baseball… what are you going for?

    6. I went to NO in August a few years ago (for my husband’s family reunion) and while we had fun and made the best of it, the weather was miserable.

    7. Minnesota – St.Paul/Minneapolis. End of August is the State Fair (in St. Paul). Take 2 hours and drive north to Duluth/Lake Superior.

    8. Chicago is ok in August. Seattle is beautiful in August. Denver/Boulder would be nice, as would Sun Valley or Jackson Hole.

  5. Thread jack —

I just bought a new wrap dress… my first! It’s just a bit too low cut and if I shift my boob definitely pops out. I’m thinking of safety pinning the inner layer to my bra, but looking for other ideas on the best way to not flash someone in a wrap dress…

      1. I agree with the Cami suggestion, but it is better, especialy in the Summer NOT to buy top’s that are subject to this. FRANK alway’s advocate’s the low cut blouse’s, but that is ONLEY b/c he wants to see my boobie’s, even onley part of them. I alway’s tell him to stop stareing at my boobie’s but I think it is a genetic thing with him. His wife does NOT have big boobie’s so I think he is starved for them. FOOEY on him!

I am leaveing work early for the holiday and am takeing the LIRR home with the manageing partner. I told him we should discuss the partnership thing b/c I need to go over some details with my DAD. If I do NOT get the detail’s straight, I will have DAD talk directly to the manageing partner. This is all so compleicated! DOUBEL FOOEY! Dad keep’s talkeing about the firm insurance policy and I realy don’t know what kind of policie’s they have. Mabye I will just have DAD talk to the manageing partner (or Frank) and get copie’s of the policie’s.

Mom is goieng to make chicken with me, so if it work’s, MABYE this will all be moot b/c Philip will MARRY me and we will have a BABY b/f next September and Grandma Leyeh will give us $50,000 –YAY! But the thought of Philip makeing a baby with me is some thing I have alot of troubel with. I rembember sex with Alan was gross when he got drunk, and he alway’s just rolled over and fell asleep. Alan at least was not tiny, but he was NOT romantic either. I need a guy who make’s me feel good, and I can NOT think Philip will care much about ME, b/c Alan alway’s thought about HIS need’s and what I could do to make HIM feel GOOD, then just burped and rolled over after he was DONE w/o even a kiss after I did all that for him. TRIPEL FOOEY!

Anyway, I may try and catch up on my Iphone, or at Dad’s house on his IMAC, but if I do NOT, have a happy weekend! YAY!!!!!

    1. Second the cami rec. For wrap dresses, I like the cropped camis from the Gap because they don’t add bulk.

I like this shirt better than the long-sleeved version but it looks too long to be worn with a suit without tucking. Any experience?

      1. I’ve used safety pins as temporary fixes, or when I have one I usually wear with a camisole and just don’t want to this time.

    2. I sometimes use very plain cotton nightgowns (they used to sell them at Uniqlo) as the base layer for a wrap dress. The effect is half camisole/ half slip. But I wouldn’t do it with anything that actually reads “lingerie that you can see during the daytime”.

    3. I like bandeaus for this sort of thing – they come up high enough to act as a cami but don’t add bulk around your waist.

    4. I just had this problem with 3 wrap dresses: had the tailor add in a snap button to make it more modest. It looks like it belonged to the original. The cami idea is great in theory, but I find it almost impossible to add in a cami without bulk. And I don’t want to buy those expensive ones recommended here (like Spanx or some Nordie’s ones) because the dresses cost enough as is and the snap was $3 each!

    5. Camisole – I purchase the BP ones from Nordstrom – they are very lightweight, on the inexpensive side, and come in a rainbow of colors. I don’t suggest a nude-for-you but rather a contrasting color, so it looks like it’s a camisole and you intended to put it on, rather than you are trying to hid something.

  6. What do we think of these chunky heels? Not for work (ever!) just for play. I’m adding the link in a reply to avoid moderation but they are called Zara Studded Sandal (Heels). Basically I own tons of pumps and wear classic shapes I kind of like the idea of a more edgy shoe to make it a bit more exciting. But can’t work out if they are TOO much. Also, I have quite large feet and it doesn’t exactly make them look small.

Or, can anyone find a streamlined more toned down version of the shoe for under $100? Thanks!

    1. I love them. I would probably avoid anything else studded with them, and probably pair with softer styles (a la the first image Parker posted), but I say go for it.

  7. My new Mac came today – I’ve never had one before, I’m a PC convert. Any tips from you ladies on do’s/don’ts, good ideas for stuff to get for it?

    1. Do be smug (ha!). Do buy AppleTV. Not sure how it works in UK, but in US, gov’t employees and many non-gov employees are able to purchase Microsoft Office for $10 (completely legit). I also like Handbrake and Adium (messaging). Enjoy, I converted many ages ago and it’s pretty easy to transition and also use both (Windows for work, Mac for home).

      1. Applecare=yes.
The other thing, where you can meet with them about whatever issue=no. Spend time clicking around, and if you must do training, try their freebie classes.

      2. yeah – good point. In my experience, a while ago, they used to fix stuff even if it was out of warranty, but they don’t really do that anymore. Blah.

  8. Shopping help needed! I want to get a pair of rose gold studs for everyday workwear, and I’d like to get a good quality pair (100% rose gold, not plated) that will last. Ball-shaped OK, but I also would be interested in a flat circle.

Most of what I have is more fashion jewelry-esque, and I’m not sure where to go for good quality jewelry. I don’t necessarily want to pay extra for the brand (i.e., I’m shying away from Tiffany’s or similar). My first thought is Macy’s, but I would appreciate some direction!

    1. Blue Nile is a great in between fashion and fine jewelry (and also great for fine jewelry!). What about these? I have them in silver and wear them all the time. Link to follow…

        1. I also like these: http://www.bluenile.com/knot-stud-earrings_20253

But caveat, I have no experience with Blue Nile jewelry. I will say that my experience with Macy’s jewelry is very much so-so. I don’t think they’re particularly high quality, if that’s what you’re looking for. I think you’re better off looking at independent jewelry stores, or maybe even vintage shops (rose gold used to be very popular in the early 20th century) . I’ve also had a good experience with Lord & Taylor’s jewelry section, but not all L&T’s sell real jewelry.

    2. Thanks for the suggestions–I like some of the Blue Nile options, but maybe I’ll peruse independent brick and mortar stores before deciding…

      1. go to 47th st b/w 5th and 6th. often wholesale, quality is good, decent selection.

  9. My pieces from Ross Simon in yellow gold have held up nicely and aren’t super expensive. Also, I love most pieces from Roberto Coin (that may be pricier than what you are looking for).

  10. Just wanted to say a quick thanks to the ladies who gave me suggestions on moisturizers with sunscreen. Special thanks to ohc for the Josie Maran rec! I’ve been using to good results! My skin tolerates it really well.

    1. Hey, that’s great! I totally got inspired to use it myself from this site, so I’m glad the good vibes can get passed along.

  11. I need a major work wardrobe update. I am looking to replace 2-4 suits. I’ve lost a bit of weight over the past 2 years. I went from a 10 to a 4-6.

I am replacing Macy’s type suits. Suggestions on who’s got good sales this weekend? I’m looking to spend <$100 per suit if possible.

I'm in state court. I have long days. I need something comfortable, okay to sweat through, dry clean is okay.

    1. Check the clearance racks at Talbots, they usually have tons in the smaller sizes. Their suiting is high quality, I have some blazers that have held up for 8 years.

    2. Jones New York – especially if there’s an outlet near you. Basic suits, basic colors – and they’re machine washable. Note – I’ve never actually done that, I dry clean, but if trial lasts longer than expected, being able to wash a suit might come in handy. FWIW, most of my other suits are Elie Tahari, Theory, etc.

  12. I took on a pretty heartbreaking pro bono matter that involves children. In reality, there is very little I can do for my client, but am trying to do what I can. I just had a baby 10 months ago, and I’m really, really struggling to mentally separate from the case. I find myself sort of winding into a despair spiral – I start thinking about how lucky I am to be able to provide my son with his basic needs and so much more, then I start thinking about my client, then I start thinking about the little victims of the tornado/Sandy Hook, then I start thinking about how many parents are struggling world-wide to provide safe environments for their kids, much less feed them, and suddenly I’m overwhelmed and crying in my office.

I definitely can get caught up in sad stories, but this is unusual for me. Any advice to get myself mentally in check so I can be an effective advocate for my client (and functioning human/mom)?

    1. I should note, I have brought in a co-counsel from my firm with experience in similar matters. So, professionally, I have back-up and help, and another person to work with on the matter.

After an upcoming hearing, I’ll probably pass most of the case on to him, but will need to stay involved for at least a few more days.

      1. Are you comfortable enough with your co-counsel to ask how they handle those thoughts? That sounds like a very human thought pattern, so I bet anyone with experience in the legal matters also has dealt with the associated emotional difficulties.

    2. There has been a lot of sh*tty things happening in the world lately. I tend to be pretty calm/stoic to most news and the tornado hitting the elementary school had me in tears. I think the past 5 months have been one thing after another, so even your average person (hi, no kids) is feeling pretty raw.

My advice to you is to recognize you’re doing what you can to help and that is enough. Hell, it’s more than most people do. If you feel so inclined, volunteer or donate money, to help with a particular cause.

When the feelings start to get to you, you can write out what you’ve done to help and what you need to do to help your client. Seeing it on paper for me usually takes it out of the context of big worldly problems to concrete tasks I can focus on.

    3. Is there anyone in your office who is a former prosecutor, paramedic, cop, nurse, any profession where you see constant bad stuff happening? If so, they can probably give you tips for mentally distancing yourself. For me it was key to be surrounded by like minded people. If you hear any of the above decompressing at a bar after work you would think they were heartless the way they laugh about certain situations they encounter. The truth is, if you don’t find some humor in it, even if it is very very dark humor, you cry. The first time I had to work in an environment with people who weren’t used to burying their emotions and actually felt that sad cases were sad I had such a hard time handling the work emotionally. My husband pointed out that I needed to find another hardened soul in the office, who understood my former law enforcement coping mechanisms, with whom I could vent/chat/talk crassly about the case. Even someone who gets angry instead of sad would be very useful. If you don’t have that in the office, try to find someone in your personal life you can trust that you can talk to about this without disclosing any identifying details/client confidences.

Once you hit that dark humor spot, you will feel a weight come off your shoulders. As some of you know, I had a rough time dealing with the Boston Bombings b/c I was fairly close to where it happened. Just last week, the BAA had on their facebook a survey asking where the loudest cheers on the race course were. When they copied it to twitter, they shortened the question to “where was the loudest place on the course?” with a few choices and an other. I cracked myself up when I (who was a spectator, not a runner) wanted to click “other” and type in “where the bombs went off.” Probably not that funny to anyone else but made me feel strangely better.

      Good luck!

      1. “If you hear any of the above decompressing at a bar after work you would think they were heartless the way they laugh about certain situations they encounter. The truth is, if you don’t find some humor in it, even if it is very very dark humor, you cry.”

This is such a great statement. Thank you.

      2. Definitely this. I think people are often horrified by the convos I’m having with fellow criminal lawyers, but it definitely helps us decompress/stay sane/not get insanely burnt out.

    4. I’m also very sensitive to painful news stories and working with clients in difficult situations. I used to think there was something wrong with me, but after reading books and articles by people like Brene Brown and Thich Nhat Hanh, I began viewing this kind of empathetic reaction as a good quality. You can react to tragedy be shutting down, or by opening your heart and becoming a more compassionate person. You are obviously already very compassionate, and probably having a baby has made your heart open even more. That’s a good thing! If you allow yourself to feel deeply, the pain of these emotions actually can start to feel like gratitude, and can help you feel joy more deeply also. Through difficulty we come to know ourselves more intimately.

    5. Thank you for taking on this type of pro bono work. This is my every day job and it is completely natural and understandable for you to be feeling this way! I definitely second everyone’s advice to seek out people with experience in the field and vent it out. There is such a thing as secondary trauma and it’s important to exercise self-care in these difficult/dark lines of work. You’re doing good in the world, try to focus on that. And take care!

    6. Look up “secondary trauma”/”compassion fatigue”…if that resonates: I have dealt with this, though in a different context than law, but I understand that it’s something lawyers doing this kind of work sometimes deal with. Figure out how to take care of yourself so you can keep doing the work you’re doing, because it’s important. I waited too long/denied that *I* was having a hard time, and now I’m re-evaluating the kind of work I can/can’t do with my life.

  13. We are flying up to San Francisco today to spend the weekend with our kids. We have a SF State graduation tomorrow and then off to Sonoma and Napa. It looks from weather reports to be cool this weekend even in wine country.

San Francisco ”Rettes– Will a trench keep me warm enough or do I need to take my wool coat? Can I go bare legged in dresses with sandals or will I freeze to death? It has been warm here in SoCal for so long that I forget what to wear in cooler weather.

    1. i think you’ll be fine in a trench, my wool is away for now. I’d take a pair of jeans in case it’s really chilly, but it’s generally been nice in wine country even when cold in the city this time of year. Not LA warm, but warm enough for bare legs w/ a light layer and light jacket. always take a scarf – that’s my key layer.

    2. It’s been quite cold here lately, and windy. (Though caveat, I’m further south on the peninsula.) Of course it depends on your tolerance and how much time you plan to spend outdoors. I was outside yesterday evening in bare legs and I was freezing. A lined trench with pants would be fine, but with a skirt I’d bring something warmer (but I’m a big wimp when it comes to cold.)

    3. Also, I would avoid sandals as my feet would get cold, especially along the bay where it gets windy.
I’d go with jeans, trench and closed walking shoes. A skirt without tights would be ok if you’re planning to go around by car with not much walking.

  14. Regular poster, going anon. I am looking for tips on lining up a new job after my maternity leave. I am a few weeks from delivery and will be back from maternity leave in late summer/early fall. I don’t hate my current job but for several reasons would like to transition to a new job when I am back. I don’t know how to deal with the timing… if I apply to roles that are open right now then I can start the job for almost 4 months. Even though most hiring processes take at least 2 months, I feel like my application is rejected as soon as the other side figures out I am going on leave soon (and I can’t hide that in face-to-face interviews). Should I wait until after I deliver my baby to apply to new jobs? I am worried that by the time I recover enough to do job hunting, I won’t have enough time left to interview and start a new job. Any advice or tips?

    1. Job hunting could take a long time – it could easily take months. I had a friend interview while a few months pregnant, 2nd round when very pregnant, and callbacks during her maternity leave. Yes, a very stretched out process. So, start applying now, because you are unlikely to start the new job in a few weeks – it may actually take longer than that for them to get back to you at all. However, you also need to keep in mind that if you find a great position and they need someone right away, you may need to go back sooner than you anticipated and not take as long a leave. Of course, you could try and negotiate a start date.

      1. This has been my approach but conversations tend to peter out once the maternity leave thing comes up. I should perhaps be more proactive about mentioning that I am open to starting sooner. Thanks for that idea!

    2. Do you already have children? My advice, speaking as someone who has 2 kids and a demanding job, is to wait 4 – 6 months after you’ve returned from leave to look for a new job. At this point you don’t know if your baby will have any issues or how you will adapt to working full time + a newborn. Speaking from personal experience, its nice to have some credibility built up when returning to a job from leave. I’m pretty aggressive when it comes to my career but I’m also conservative when it comes to navigating family situations such as this.

If you already have kids you may have a better sense for this, but given that you don’t hate your job I’d wait a bit before looking. Also, I think that there may be FMLA implications if you leave your curent job and then start a new one.

      1. However, I would start a ‘soft’ hunt, as in network, polish my resume, make a list of companies/positions I’m targeting…

        1. Nope no kids yet. I do hear from new moms that they feel differently about work/career after having kids but that’s exactly what I am afraid of… that if I don’t push myself to accelerate my career right now, I’ll be too caught up in baby and then be stuck at my job for another year or more.

          1. I’m not sure you’re reading Julep’s advice the right way. To put it more bluntly: You’re probably not going to be a rock star employee when you first come back from maternity leave if your baby is only 3 months old. Do you really want that to be the first impression you make at a new job?

      2. +1. Lots of people change their minds about what they want after having kids. It’s hard to know how you’ll respond to the baby stage until you’re there.

  15. Sorry if I post twice but original is stuck in moderation.

We are flying up to San Francisco today to spend the weekend with our kids. We have a SF State graduation tomorrow and then off to Sonoma and Napa. It looks from weather reports to be cool this weekend even in wine country.

Those of you in San Francisco – Will a trench keep me warm enough or do I need to take my wool coat? Can I go bare legged in dresses with sandals or will I freeze to death? It has been warm here in SoCal for so long that I forget what to wear in cooler weather.

    1. I would bring a trench over a wool coat. If it’s windy or foggy you might be a little chilly with bare legs and sandals, but I don’t think you’ll freeze to death.

It’s supposed to be mid-70 or so in Napa this weekend, which IMO is perfect weather for that area. You’ll definitely be fine with dresses and sandals there. Have fun!

  16. I need a new pair of basic black flats. Was hoping to avoid any bows or buckles, but I’m kind of digging this pair: http://www.6pm.com/ivanka-trump-abello-black-leather

It’s very marked down, so I think I will take a chance, but was wondering if anyone here has it or tried it on and could share their thoughts before I pull the trigger. I’ve never actually bought IT shoes before but I recall positive comments on this site about their comfort/quality… Thanks!

    1. Hey AIMS, I’ve bought 3 pairs of Ivanka Trump shoes in the past six months. Two are flats and they are so comfortable. I have the Angeline: http://www.6pm.com/ivanka-trump-angeline-black-black?si1992090=&channel=70&mr:referralID=1c137122-c487-11e2-9dea-001b2166becc which look similar to the ones you were considering.

For me, they run large. I normally wear an 8.5 in heels and an 8 in flats. I go up in heels for the width. In the Angeline I bought an 8 and love them. I bought the Hadyn in a 7.5 when I tried on an 8 and they were huge. So I’m wondering if you should try ordering the 6.5.

      1. This is actually a great idea! I have occasionally had to size down for flats, too. In my cart they go, thank you!

    2. I have never worn IT flats, but I have a pair of boots (low heel) and a pair of booties (maybe 3 inch heel), and I have found them to be surprisingly comfortable.

    3. I highly recommend the Cole Haan Bacara leather flats. I’m on my second pair, and they hold up extremely well. Case in point: yesterday I wore them out on a training range in the rain/mud (don’t ask – work field trip) and today they’re dry and back to new!

      1. Thanks, I think I am looking for pointy flats because I want something a bit dressier in spirit, but I will keep them in mind if the ITs don’t work out.

  17. Workout question – I’m deciding between trying Pure Barre, Bar Method, and Physique 57 (probably will try DVDs and classes, not sure what order) and any advice would be greatly appreciated! I looked over a helpful thread on this site from about a year ago, but I am curious as to the different experiences with these three classes.

I am looking for both toning and cardio, but cardio is probably more important to me–I am looking to lose 10-15 pounds. Also, I am short and put on muscle really easily, and so I really am looking for the elusive workout (which I have never found) that allows me to strengthen muscles without bulking up.

I also haven’t worked out regularly for quite some time. Basically my only exercise is walking about 3 miles a day. I’m naturally fairly athletic, and don’t mind working hard, but I am hoping to find something that is not that difficult to pick up on–I have hated kickboxing classes in the past because I feel like I can’t focus on working out when I am constantly behind with steps. Maybe I should buy/complete DVDs first?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. I’ve tried all three of those + Core Fusion at Exhale Spa. Physique 57 by far has the most cardio effect for me–my heart gets going and my hair will be drenched just as much as on summer runs! I’d say Core Fusion is next best in terms of cardio, but it depends on the instructor and class style you go to. Pure Barre and Bar Method have never made me sweat–I don’t know about BM, but my local PB studio actually seems to consider it a selling point that you can go straight from class to happy hour without your makeup or blowout getting ruined. A selling point for some I’m sure, but not me and it sounds like not you either.

Physique 57 does a BOGO offer for first-timers, and Core Fusion has a $30 unlimited first week, so you might as well give them both a shot and see what one you like best. Have fun!

    2. Try Power Yoga for strength without bulk. It’s an amazing workout and has transformed my body.

    3. I have tried all three (live classes not dvds) also and definitely think Physique 57 is the most challenging. You will definitely see toning results with the regular barre classes, but I’m not sure on the fat loss (depending on your current cardio fitness). Good news, though, is that I think they just added a “Physique Cardio” class to their regime so I would definitely suggest looking into that! I havent’ tried it yet but really want to! I would imagine it will get the job done, they’re great classes.

    4. Thank you for the insights!

Do you think it would be worth it to get the DVDs beforehand (for any class, really)? I’m thinking:

PRO: I would be more comfortable going in, I would know what to expect, I would be familiar with terms, etc.

CON: I might just do everything wrong on my own.

      1. FWIW, I’m in NYC, I know P57 and CoreFusion have beginner/introductory classes. I think it’s a great idea to start off in those classes, even if you’re a bit worried about going and feeling embarrassed, because I’ve found the environments (esp at P57) very supportive! I’m not dancery or flexible at all and was nervous about my first barre class, but the beginner class was a really supportive environment and the teachers definitely help a ton with form, etc.

    5. I think these are good recommendations. While I haven’t done Physique or CoreFusion (not in my city), I do Pure Barre regularly. I love it for toning up but I don’t think it has enough cardio for what you want.

    6. I LOVE Physique 57 — nothing tones me up like their classes. If you take Cardio or Formula 57, you’ll definitely get a nice cardio workout.

  18. Does anyone on this board regularly have periods of around 10 -11days?!? This has been my case since I had my son a couple of years ago, and I’m wondering if it’s normal/common. It was never in the 5 day range to begin with, but 10-11 seems really long. And it’s mostly spotting at the front and back end, but it’s more annoying than anything. Let me know if this happens to you.

    1. Mine usually last around 10 days, super heavy the first half and then lighter the second half. But it’s not normal or common, I would talk to your doctor about it because it can either be a symptom of something (ie endometriosis, though I think that usually comes with infertility) or lead to problems (ie anemia).

    2. I had this for several years, along with recurrent pain, and it turned out to be mild endometriosis. I’d just check with your gyno at your next visit.

  19. What is the number one thing that drives you crazy about your city?

Right now, I’m so very annoyed that it’s currently 4C and pouring, and will be down to almost 0C tonight, and there was snow nearby. It’s almost June. I’m wearing a down jacket to work and fleece lined rainboots.

I’d like to add poor public transit and mediocre art/culture scene to my list of complaints. Oh, and minimal vegetarian offerings at restaurants, though I’m mostly over that one, since it means I get to have salad+dessert, instead of a meal.

    1. Terrible city planning. The fact that developers seem to run everything. Urban sprawl. Lack of good public transport. (Yes, those are all definitely connected). Useless city politicians. Seriously unquestioned car-culture.

I won’t even mention the weather because, well, it’s Winterpeg. I’d be wasting my breath!

Things I love: people really are friendly here in Friendly Manitoba. Disproportionately good arts/culture scene for a city of this size. Many good, affordable ethnic restaurants. Good sense of community in lots of neighbourhoods. Being able to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond.

      1. Your first paragraph sounds just like Tampa, except opposite temp extremes. His in the upper 80s, lows in the mid 70s, daily T-storms started this week, will continue through early Oct, only change being that his will be in low 90s, lows above 80. There are good arty/cultural things here, enough for a visit, but we’ve seen them.
Adding to the irritation is that some people think it’s normal to start a conversation by saying “it’s a beautiful day in paradise” Gag!

    2. 1. The fact that as soon as it starts raining, it automatically takes twice as long to get anywhere. I mean, really, people. You’d think that you’d be used to rain in Vancouver.

      2. The bad drivers. Seriously. I think we have more than anywhere else I’ve ever been. The taxi drivers are the worst.

      1. FOR REAL. I just switched over to DC residency and I’m really going to miss having representation in Congress.

  20. When I’m not at work, I wear workout attire. Religiously and exclusively (small exception for church).

I have two children <5 who require lifting for potties if we are out and about (and to wash hands) and to get the smaller one into a car seat. We go to the park. We go to the pool. There are swimming lessons. I have a two story house and do a lot of laundry and and cook and go to the grocery store and target. It is like working out, no? :)

From when I was single, I have Lilly dresses and other cute clothes. But I don't wear them. Maybe just wear then anyway even thought the sneakers / Keens will look a bit off to step it up a bit? Tone down the Shirts With Words in favor of a polo?

It's a good thing that What Not to Wear is at the end of its run; otherwise, I might be in their crosshairs.

    1. Are you wearing frumpy or form fitting workout clothes? I think there is a huge difference between wearing baggy sweat pants and an oversized t-shirt versus skin tight black capri yoga pants and a racerback built in bra tank. Obviously these are two extremes but there is some very good looking work out gear out there. It would be just as functional but you might feel better about your choice.

Like this Ashley Greene pic: [disclaimer – found via google images, no idea what blog I’m linking to]

*ducking from all of the yoga pants are not pants people!*

    2. I agree with Blonde Lawyer. Most weekends, I’m running around in workout clothes, mostly because I’ve already worked out and find it most efficient to get everything done while I’m already out and about. That said, there’s a big difference between fitted athletic gear (e.g., flared yoga pants, slub cotton tee and contrast sports bra) and the free XXL tshirt you got from the 1999 kickball championship + threadbare college sweats that are so worn out, you have to keep pulling up the waistband all day look, you know? The former could look cute and sporty on a weekend, the latter, while fine (you’re clothed, you’re wrangling two small children, most people won’t ask any more of you) probably looks sloppy. Both should allow you to run from thing to thing and chase after the kids comfortably, though!

      1. Oh, yes, I am on Team Skort in the summer. Skirt Sports ones, I think, and a Nike golf skort.

In the winter, it’s often long-sleeved layering tees and lots of fleece.

It’s just that often on this site I read “this dress would be great on the weekend” and realize that that would be great, style-wise, but not likely to happen. If I can’t wear a coobie bra (I’ve upgraded a bit — a year ago I would not give up the sports bra all the time, even though it is a terrible look on me) with it, it is just asking too much!

  21. Ladies, does anyone have recommendations for a wedding scrap book? I’d like to put together a scrap book with paper items like cards, invitations, a table marker or two, etc. Just wondering if there were any particular wedding scrap books out there that weren’t just plain pages (I am very craft-challenged!) TIA!

    1. My sister did this for me! She picked a scrapbook album at Michael’s craft store and a package of paper in the same size but varying colors/styles to create a more interesting look. You can also buy individual sheets of paper. Michael’s has scrapbook “kits” as well (including wedding-themed) with stickers, paper 4×6 photo frames, etc to make the pages more fancy. My mom and bridesmaids added a few pages with pictures of us from different points in our lives. We left a few pages blank for when we finally get our wedding pics printed. Its a lovely idea!
