Gift Idea: Cashmere Cardigan

I did a little roundup on Cyber Monday of some of the pricier work wardrobe essentials, including some of the reader favorite brands for cashmere. I'd include Neiman Marcus's in-house cashmere in the list, including this gorgeous ribbed open-front cashmere cardigan with cuff (pictured), this navy cashmere duster, and this cashmere open cardigan (with a TON of color options).

The pictured cardigan is available in pearl grey and black, sizes XS-XL, for $276 (plus a GWP of cashmere masks right now).

Readers, are you upgrading your at-home wardrobes with cashmere cardigans and the like — or are you sticking with washable blends like the ones from Barefoot Dreams and Athleta?

Below, some of our favorite cashmere sweaters…

Some of the classic cashmere sweaters for work (as of 2025) include Nordstrom Cashmere, Quince ($50!), Vince, J.Crew, Naadam, Talbots, Lands' End, and Brooks Brothers. If you're looking for something fancier try TSE, Loro Piana, Akris, Autumn Cashmere, or (more casual) Jenni Kayne.

Some of our other favorite cardigans for lounging include…

  1. I need help buying a Christmas gift for my dad. For a slough of reasons, he currently lives in a nearby campground (and is very happy doing this). He will be moving into an actual house in the next month or so, but currently all of his stuff is in storage. He doesn’t drink, and loves to camp/fly fish/ski. The logical thing to get him would be some kind of camping gear from a store like REI, right? Well, he works at REI, so he gets a huge discount on stuff from there and is very particular about his gear, so I don’t think I could pick something out. The last few years, I’ve gotten him a gift card to Orvis (a fly fishing store), but I feel like I’ve worn that out. He does love baseball, but doesn’t really like team merchandise other than hats, which he already has. Any suggestions?

    1. A selection of flies for fly fishing. They look pretty and would be somewhat festive as well as functional.

      1. Like I said above, he’s very picky and I don’t want to buy gear for him. I know I wouldn’t get him the right flies or something he would be happy with. That’s why I’ve done the gift card in years past. Maybe I’ll just do that again.

        1. You said you didn’t want to buy camping gear, but okay. Just get a gift card and call it a day then. We don’t know the nuances of your father’s preferences.

      2. He can also be somewhat of a grinch about the holidays, so the thought of me giving him a box of flies and saying, “I picked these because they look festive!”…the look on his face would be something! Lol

    2. Personalized fishing theme sign with his last name that he can hang on a tree outside his campsite that he can then hang outside his new house?

      1. I got my dad a wood cutout of his favorite stadium from Uncommon Things, which he loved.

    3. Something for his new residence: a nice throw blanket, a new kitchen tool or upgrade to an item he has had forever, or a decorative item, like a photo of the two of you framed for displaying. A news subscription or even streaming service subscription.
Sounds like avoiding stuff for his hobbies is best if he is particular.

    4. My friends who tie their own flies have an assortment of massive magnifying glasses, spotlights, and super-stabalized work surfaces. Even a mediocre version was a big hit with DH last year. I found it at a craft store.

    5. Binoculars? Or a knife? I think people who like knifes tend to like having different ones / variety, so you wouldn’t have to worry about getting the “wrong” one. A waterproof watch? A fish or camping-themed piece of art for his new house? One of those velcro bracelets or necklaces that has his name and any medical concerns (diabetes, blood type, whatever) plus an emergency contact in case he gets hurt while out somewhere?

    6. You can never have too many flashlights. Or batteries. Or solar-powered lanterns.

      1. My dad told me his “favorite gift” I ever got him was 2 $6 solar powered inflatable lanterns….

      1. +1. I was going to recommend a print from Subpar Parks, as well, if you know his favorite park. So good.

    7. Solid wool Pendleton blanket (or if you are Canadian, one from the Bay). While there is lots of new technology to keep you warm, sometimes a thick wool blanket is great for sitting outside and chilly nights. Also, if he hasn’t already got on the Yeti bandwagon, one of their coolers could make a Christmas present. And, yes, initial reaction is several hundred dollar cooler followed by faces but they are worth it.

      1. Yeti coolers are so, so worth it. Got one for a trip this year and it still had ice after 4 days.

    8. I think:

A philanthropic gift based on his interests. He is resourceful, on point and knowledgeable about how to survive. Give somebody else a dad shortcut.

  2. I paid off my car this week! This was a personal financial goal for 2020 and I managed to do it despite what the year threw at me. It’s not something I’m going to harp on in real life, but I am sharing it here because I am excited to not have car payments going into 2021!
Anyone else have a small to large personal goal met or victory to share about this week? Financial or otherwise. What are bright spots in your lives that you wouldn’t necessarily talk much about? I’d love to hear.

    1. Nice! My husband and I hit a net worth target faster than anticipated (thanks COVID for cutting our spending), which feels great after not contributing much to retirement during grad school. I’m hopeful that we can retire in 20 years or earlier.

    2. I was able to pay all my kid’s college tuition this year, so she didn’t have to take out any student loans. Next year might be iffy but it’s nice to know I could keep that burden off her a bit.

      1. That is awesome. This is a major gift you are giving your kid. Even if you can’t keep it up the entire time they’re in school, every year/semester helps. My mom was able to pay my college tuition all four years and it’s something I think about gratefully almost every day.

        1. Thanks. I’m glad OP asked this question because it made me think about it and realize that this was a cool thing.

    3. This will be the first year I could afford to max out my 401k! The paycheck with the final deduction comes this week, and I am so excited to see that nice round number.

      1. Well done! That’s a good feeling, even if it’s not really immediate gratification.

    4. I started a 529 for my infant. Just paid off my hospital bills, so I haven’t been putting a huge amount of money in. It is still good to know that we are saving consistently.

    5. My son is a senior in HS and we hit his 529 savings goal this week, a little ahead of plan (thank you stock market!)

      1. Hi – not sure if you will read this because I’m late to reply, but if your son is a senior in HS, be careful about the % of his 529 that is in stocks. Financial goals for the next 2-5 years should generally be largely in cash/cash-like instruments so that if the stock market drops you don’t lose what you have worked so hard for! (Happened in real life to a good friend. Her parents lost more than a third of her college savings when the tech bubble popped.) That said, congrats on hitting your goal!

  3. My dad had another stroke early this morning. Last we heard at 7 am he was being taken into interventional radiology. I’m terrified.

    1. You, your dad, and your family are in my prayers. Hugs from this internet stranger.

    2. Oh no Sloan, I’m so sorry. You and your family are in my thoughts. Big hugs.

    3. I’m so sorry to hear this. At least it is good to know he is in the hospital, where he can get immediate, excellent care. Sending you and your family all good thoughts.

    4. Oh I’m sorry – hugs and strong thoughts from an internet stranger. Hang in there.

    5. I’m so sorry – I must have missed the prior message. I wish him a speedy recovery and less stress for you and your family. ICUs in covid are stressful so hang in there.

    6. Thank you all. Doc said they were able to clear the clots. He’s awake but will likely have to go to 2-3 weeks of inpatient rehab, where we still can’t see him.

      1. Been MIA all day and just seeing this now. I am so sorry to hear about the scare, but relieved that doc said they were able to clear. Health issues are always scary, but I imagine it is even more difficult right now because you are isolated from your dad during this time. Sending your dad, you, and your family warm thoughts.

      2. I’m so sorry. This would be scary in “normal” times, but so much more so now. Sending love and well wishes.

  4. Any recommendations for a coffee maker that has options for pot and single cup but doesn’t use k-cups for the single serve option and is under $200?

    1. For a single cup, I like a pour-over cone. I’ve had a plastic one from Melitta since college. Apparently I was sophisticated and didn’t even know it.

    2. Not fancy at all but I’ve had this one for maybe 10 years:
      https://www.walmart.com/ip/Hamilton-Beach-10-Cup-Stay-or-Go-Thermal-Coffee-Maker/6498734
I mostly use it with my own tall thermal mugs bc I am the only coffee drinker in my house. It comes with a split basket so you can brew two different kinds into two different mugs at the same time. Also comes with a regular basket for a single kind. My only beef is that the thermal carafe isn’t super insulating – but it’s not a huge deal in this house.

    3. I have a Bonavita coffee brewer that is pour over style (it’s like a shower head in there instead of a single spout), I think it’s model number BV1901GW. It’s effective at making a single cup or a pot.
But I also have a ceramic pour over thingy that I think makes a better single cup, so I usually just use that.

  5. To answer Kat’s question, I am relying more on machine washable sweaters this year. I love my costco barefoot dreams knockoffs, and I’m also wearing some old heavier cotton cardigans. I just don’t feel like wearing my nice wool and cashmere stuff for working from home, especially since I’m always doing something in the kitchen (baking bread, getting dinner going, etc) which I would obviously never have been doing in the office.

    1. +1; I haven’t even gotten my cashmere or wool sweaters out of storage, much less felt any desire to shop for more of them. Fleece-type tunics and turtlenecks will be in heavy rotation this year.

    2. Yep, I’m living in “cute casual” – things like interesting sweatshirts that are quilted or tunics that have a bit of interest. WFH will be permanent for me when this is over (excepting big client meetings, etc), so I’m really all about interesting tops that aren’t fussy.

  6. I feel the same way as the other posters. Washable is the way to go at home. I cannot relax in something that cannot be machine washed, no matter how soft and luxurious it is. I’m really liking Barefoot Dreams stuff, too, thanks to Kat. However, I am a bit disappointed that they don’t have more sizes, especially on the smaller end. I got a robe in the smallest size, and it is just too big for me. I’m going to give it to my mom.

I also got the revlon hair dryer / blowout dryer that Kat mentioned above during the Black Friday sales. OMG. I tried it for the first time this week, and it was AMAZING. I have frizzy, curly, fine hair that has made it so hard to do my own blowouts at home. It takes FOREVER with only mixed results, and I end up being a sweaty mess, too, cuz I get hot while drying my hair because it takes so long. For years, I’ve just opted to stick with wearing my hair curly because I didn’t really have a choice. This week, I washed my hair with cowash, and put in leave-in conditioner and a little morroccan oil afterward. I pulled it up with a clip to air dry it but sort of pull it straight while it dried on top. When it was 70% dry after about 1.5 hrs, I blew it dry with the Revlon dryer, and it looked INCREDIBLE!! It was like I had just gotten back from the salon! I didn’t have all the hairspray and styling gunk in it either. So soft and smooth! LOVED IT!!!!

Thank you for the great recommendations!!!
