iconiconWe like this merino wool top by Antonio Melani.  We love the detail around the neckline (which looks more sophisticated to us than a simple ruffle, but hey) and the vibrancy of the violet — and we generally like a ribbed high waist.  We’re also intrigued that in half of the pictures they show the model with the sweater tucked into skirts, so the ribbing all but disappears, which seems to be a great way to get more mileage out of the top.  Was $89, now down to $18 (in violet only). Suit of the Week

by C on 01/27/2010 · 21 comments

in Fashion, Suits

For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.

Dillards is having some great online sales, and if you try to ignore the fact that, without fail, the model is wearing ugly sandals with pants that are too short.  We like this charcoal Antonio Melani suit — we think it would go great with a dark purple or royal blue top.  The jacket (Antonio Melani “Zelia” Jacket) is marked down to $83.58 (sizes 4, 10, 12, 14 only), and the pants (Antonio Melani “Antonio” Pants) are now $54.18 (sizes 6 and 12 only).

We’re really liking this merino wool cowlneck from Antonio Melani — particularly the slight dolman sleeves and the way you can wear the neckline multiple ways (lower, like a boatneck; higher, like a scooped cowl; or wider, almost off-the-shoulder). It seems versatile and classic at the same time, and we love the range of colors it comes in: ivory (pictured), raisin, moss, espresso, eclipse, and black. It’s $119 at Dillards, available in sizes XS-L.  Antonio Melani “Clarissa” Cowlneck Sweater

We’re normally a bit iffy about colored suits, but we do seem to have a thing for purple ones.  (Actually, we just realized how much of a thing we have for purple suits — we promise, this’ll be the last one of ‘09.)  Today we like this deep, deep eggplant suit from Anne Klein — we like the interesting collar details, the double buttons in the front, and the tailoring of the jacket.  We also like the sale:  the suit (Anne Klein Suit 2-Piece Skirted Suit) is on sale at Dillards for $107 (marked down from $179), available in sizes 2-14.

The funny thing about a short week (like last week) is that it makes the next one seem even longer by comparison — so happy Friday to everyone.  For today, we like this basic tank that has some nice pleating at the top — definitely acceptable under a suit or a camisole, or perhaps a good way to raise the neckline of an otherwise iffy sweater.  We know a good sale when we see one, too — this was $59.50, and is now $17.85 at Dillards.  Available in black, purple, and blue (pictured), in a variety of sizes for each color.  Lauren by Ralph Lauren “Vatusia” Pleated Scoopneck Top

Today’s post is suggested by reader J, who — like us — wears dresses as often as possible in the summertime.  She recently purchased this dress, and notes that “for the price, the quality seems quite good (except for the belt, which is easily swapped).  Although it doesn’t say so in the description, the dress also has essentially invisible – yet deep – pockets. It’s incredibly flattering on. I think that it’s a great summer-to-fall dress.”  So do we — it’s lovely!  J got hers at Macy’s but we couldn’t find it on the website… it is also available at Dillards.com for $80.  Jessica Howard Belted Dress

Oooo: we’re loving this dress by Laundry by Shelli Segal, available in inkblot blue (sadly only available for the tiny girls) and in melon red (available up to size 6). Clean lines, solid patterns, a bit of interesting pleating, and a nice belt… lovely. It’s on sale for $129 (was $215) at Dillard’s. Laundry by Shelli Segal Belted Jersey Dress

iconOk, we’re totally loving this black and gray plaid dress. Great neckline, great hemline, great pattern. In order to keep the floaty fabric from seeming too “dinner party” we’d keep everything kind of neutral and professional: black or white cropped blazer (not a cardi), and closed-toe pumps to match. It’s available at Dillard’s for $169 (among, we might add, quite a few cute other Melani dresses that reader C alerted us to!) Antonio Melani “Chelsi” Dress

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend. iconWe don’t think the picture does this top justice — we love the idea of a satin inset at the square neck, and the puff sleeves add a nice detail. It’s an odd time to be selling it — we always think of a watermelon red as being better for July-February — but perhaps that explains the price: it’s $22 (was $78) at Dillard’s. We’d wear it with gray trousers and a pearl necklace. Nygard Collection Satin-Inset Puff-Sleeve Top

See? Here’s a better picture of the top in yellow (no longer available) — it looks far better than the picture of it in red looks.
