Coffee Break – Nautical Nylon Tote

Milly Nautical Nylon ToteBergdorf Goodman’s “big sale” is on, with savings up to 40% off. For today’s Coffee Break, I’m liking nautical tote from Milly (available in both red and black). At 11.5″ high by 14″ wide, it’s big enough for even legal-sized papers — but the bright, happy color and lightweight nylon would be perfect either at the office or for that weekend getaway. The tote was $335, but is now marked to $201 at Bergdorf. Milly Nautical Nylon Tote

Should You Bring a “Brag Book” To Job Interviews?

Granny's Brag Book - a Mini Album, originally uploaded to Flickr by campbelj45ca.Should you create a “brag book” containing various career-related things you’re proud of — and then bring it to a job interview? Reader E wonders…

I have recently started a new career in the Privacy Field. After college I worked as a paralegal for about 5 years, then I took a break for graduate school, where I earned a Master in Information Science. I’ve held my current job in my field for about 6 months and I am gearing up to start looking for the next step in my career. With that in mind, I was thinking about creating a “brag book” for interviews. I’ve done some online research, and there are some good resources on the books, but I would love your opinion and the opinion of fellow readers on the value of such a “book,” what to include in the book, etc.

Congrats on your new career, E! I’ll admit it: I had to Google “brag book” in the job interview context, since I’m mostly familiar with it in the “grandma” context. (As in, the grandmother carries a small book of photos to brag about her grandchildren.) I will say that I think it’s kind of an unfortunate name, but it’s a great concept, at least for your personal use. I’m not sure I would bring it on job interviews, though.  (Pictured: Granny’s Brag Book – a Mini Album, originally uploaded to Flickr by campbelj45ca.)

Thursday’s TPS Report: Piped Birdseye Blazer

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

This blazer is on deep discount at White House|Black Market — and it has a ton of positive reviews. I do like the ruffles, the piping, and the peplum, but this is definitely one of those “need to try it on” to see how it fits you. For the price, though, it may just be worth it: was $158, now marked to $59.98 (sizes 6, 10, 14, and 16 only).  (They also have a number of cute dresses on sale for around $70ish.) Suit of the Week: J.Crew

Women's Ludlow jacket in herringbone linenFor busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.

Oooh: In addition to creating a women’s version of their popular men’s jacket, J.Crew has also made a version in linen. Love the black herringbone pattern, and the long lean lines. The jacket (Women’s Ludlow jacket in herringbone linen) is $350, and the pants (Women’s Ludlow trouser in herringbone linen) are $195. [Read more…]

Open Thread: Summer Hair Secrets

I thought it might be fun to share some of our best secrets for summer hair. For example, when my hair was straighter, I felt like I was constantly battling frizz — so I kept a container of Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon at the office and would smooth it on my locks before I left the office to meet up with friends. If Frizz-Ease was somehow unavailable, I just would take a slightly bigger amount of my hand lotion (I’m addicted to Curel) and, after moisturizing my hands, smooth the remaining amount on my hair.

I have never been a fan of blowdryers in the summertime, but especially over the past 5 years or so (as my hair has gotten curlier) I’ve been doing minimal blowdrying in the summer (sometimes just 3-5 minutes of blowdrying at the crown of my hair) and then letting the rest airdry into whatever waves or curls my hair wants to go into.  [Read more…]

Classiques Entier® 'Rustic Weave' Taped SkirtI was going to post something else today, but this skirt came up in one of those little “suggestion” windows and it’s just such a solidly great skirt that I had to post this instead. Knee-length? Check. Unusual but neutral color? Check. Flattering and interesting details like seams with silk-banded taping? Check. It’s not among the new markdowns at The Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale (my picks here), but I’m posting it anyway: it’s $168, sizes 0-14. Classiques Entier® ‘Rustic Weave’ Taped Skirt
