Here's a fun topic for today's open thread: what are your FASHION resolutions (if any) for 2015? Some different forms this may take:
- Cleaning out your closet, or trying to get rid of clothes that aren't worn (or just organizing your closet better with the clothes you have in it)
- Rebuilding your wardrobe after a change in size, taste, or budget
- Putting yourself on a shopping moratorium, or shopping your closet
- Wearing a suit on a regular basis (like once a week) so you don't raise suspicions at your current job when you start interviewing — pictured: the classic favorite, Theory's suiting (Gabe jacket, Emery or Max C pants)
- Challenging yourself with some patterns or colors to try in your wardrobe — maybe try a fun pattern with a scarf like the one pictured above, available at Nordstrom for $38
For my $.02, I'd love to start wearing heels again. Between the babies and the babywearing and the work-at-homing I've gotten out of the habit — I put on a pair of 3″ boots last week and nearly fell over. Part of the problem was that all of my old shoes haven't fit for a while <sob> because I seemed to pick up an additional half shoe size with each pregnancy. After Jack was born I knew I wanted to get pregnant soonish so I didn't want to bother with buying a ton of shoes in my new size, so I tried to squish myself into my old shoes — and it went about as well as it sounds. (Not good…. ow.) I've heard your feet can still change size (up or down) in the postpartum months, so I've been waiting a bit after Harry's birth as well. Obviously I don't need to wear heels — no one does! — but I really miss them! (Pictured above: I may just have to pull the trigger on these best-selling Cole Haan booties at Zappos. Hmmn…)
Ladies, what are your fashion resolutions? (Any other general resolutions you'd care to share?)
C
My new years fashion resolution is quality rather than quantity. I am also planning a big closet purge — taking everything out, trying everything on and then sorting appropriately (keep, mend/alter, donate).
Bonnie
This is my plan too. No more Old Navy, Gap, the Limited, H&M, etc.
Kimi
I just got some really great ankle boots with a 4 inch heel in a lovely soft black leather from H&M. They’re premium section has great stuff.
AIMS
I think organizing my closet is my resolution for all eternity but unless I move out of NYC and get an enormous walk in closet that’s bigger than my current kitchen, I don’t think I will ever quite get there. But one does need to have goals…
On a more realistic front, I want to get an awesome, feel-fantastic-wearing-’em pair of jeans. I feel like I used to live in jeans and now hardly wear them.
Diana Barry
I have 2:
– organize my closet and figure out which clothes I wear the most and the least
– no shopping until April!
2 Cents
I’m trying to figure out what clothes I don’t wear — and figure out why. Is it fit, color, a stain/tear, out of season? If it’s fixable (like I can’t decide what to put with it), I’m going to make it work. Otherwise, it’s getting the heave-ho. I spend too many mornings staring at my closet, wondering what to wear, though I have enough for a small village!
Diana Barry
Yes! I feel like I have too many things I never wear (see, e.g., cardigans) and I don’t really know why. Do I only wear them in Jan-Feb-March when I need another layer under my blazer? I know I get annoyed by button-downs and have stopped buying them completely, and have gotten rid of all but 2. Would like to repeat with other types of items.
2 Cents
I dislike button downs too! And for some reason, I can’t resist a cute tank top layer, but wear about 3 of them, even though I must own 15 (not kidding). Why?? Because I have nothing to wear over them? Because my sleep stupor in the morning can’t coordinate? Time to figure this out! :)
YouSaucyMinx
Do the reverse hanger method!
Hang everything in your closet with the hook of the hangar facing you, instead of away.
When you wear something, wash it and put it back, but with the hangar facing away from you (reversed from the other pieces) Do that every time you wear something.
At the end of a time period (say 1 or 2 months) check out what items are still in the original position–these are your unloved pieces!
It’s a great way to see what actually gets used, what doesn’t, and if any patterns arise from the unworn pieces.
2 Cents
Thanks! I’m considering this, since I figure it’ll lead to surprises of what I actually don’t wear. I told my friend the other day about this plan and she actually helped me figure out how to wear two pieces that were long-neglected in my closet. Friends help too!
CherryScary
Does fitting into old clothes again count? I have a handful of dresses that I love that are just a size or two too small. I love them, and can’t bear to get rid of them, so I want to fit into them again! (plus I don’t have to buy new professional dresses, since that’s what they are!)
Julia
I had saved things that were too small and when I did lose weight, I wore each thing exactly once before deciding they needed to be donated.
anonymous
I’ve always read that one shouldn’t keep clothes “to fit into later” but the pieces I’m saving are not fashon-y, they are business-formal type investment pieces that will last. Suits, suit separates and tailored sheaths. Sure, I’ve heard of people (and seen coworkers) wearing suits circa 1989, which is not what I mean. But these are generally conservatively colored (black, grey, tan) that really would be ok. I guess I’ll find out when I get there.
Cat
Stop. Buying. Clothes. I’m not spending too much – I just don’t need another thing. I’m going to start by unsubscribing to store mailing lists and not clicking over to JCrew just because I’m bored and want to see if anything good was marked down.
Also, drink less. My wine/c!cktail habit has been creeping upward lately, and not just because of holiday festiveness. Time to purposefully cut back. I’ll be trying out Lisa’s (from Privilege) technique of signaling “enough” to myself – I think it came up on this s!te some time back.
Wildkitten
I am going to cut back/stop drinking on weeknights. I’d like to save the calories and also I’d like having a cocktail to be a special occasion – not just because it’s Tuesday and I am stressed.
A Nonny Moose
I’ve done this for the past couple months. I’ve lost weight and saved a lot of money too– 2 people having 1-2 craft beers a night gets expensive! It helped to swap the booze out for fancy water (carbonate and then add fresh herbs) or tea, so I still had a sort of ritual to signal the workday was over and I could relax.
Anonymous
what herbs to you like to add? that sounds great!
Cat
seconded! I like the idea of replacing a tempting “thank god that day is over” c!cktail with something that only feels like one, both through the bubbles and the ritual of mixing something.
Parfait
I like mint or basil in my fizzy water. Also cucumber, but that’s not an herb.
A Nonny Moose
Sliced fresh ginger is really good! I’ve also liked rosemary, muddled mint; lemons and limes are good. DH likes to add frozen berries, too.
Bad idea, or at least poorly executed: cayenne (I had had a cayenne-infused c-tail at a bar once that was good, but I ended up with a bunch of it just sitting on top of the water, whoops!)
Cat
Those suggestions sound good! I especially like the basil idea – reminds me of a basil martini that I had in Palm Beach and LOVED.
Anonattorney
Since I got pregnant I’ve been finding fun nonalcoholic ways to unwind after a stressful workday. I like drinking vinegars (try Pok Pok Som, you can get it at their restaurants or online, or even at some grocery stores) mixed with sparkling water. I also like herbal teas.
cbackson
I also want to cut back on drinking, because I feel like I’m so dehydrated – ending the night with an herbal tea or just hot water and lemon seems like it would leave me feeling better in the morning.
AMB
I’m on a shopping moratorium until a trip to San Francisco in February (yay!). I am also trying to be more conscious of how I spend my money – that is partially because I know I need to set money aside for the couple of trips I want to take this year, including SFO. I’m hoping having set amounts of money to spend on clothes/going out/etc. will make me more deliberate in the choices I make.
Ellen
Yay! What a smart idea, Kat! I did NOT make any resolution’s about clotheing, but I think I will read these and adapt those that apply to me. I like this one, not b/c I am voluntarily on a moratorium, but b/c DAD put’s me on a budget and if I go over, he freeze’s my account. He say’s it’s kind of like the Price Is Right, and if I go over, I get NOTHING until the next month. He is trying to teach me budgeting, and by doeing this, he is abel to make me realize the value of money and the need NOT to spend to much of it.
Myrna’s brother asked me to go out with him to eat tomorrow. He eat’s a lot of Italian food, and that is FINE by me b/c I LOVE Italian food. There is a place near me that we can go to where they have GOOD food, and it is NOT to expensive so I think I will recomend that place. I will have MYRNA come with us, so that I do NOT feel to self conscius.
I saw Ivanka on TV last nite with her dad on Celebrety Apprentice. She is so cute, but I saw she was NOT wearing a wedding ring. Did anyone else in the HIVE notice this? I do NOT want to presume anything, but I onley wish there was a guy like Jared for me. If anyone else in the HIVE saw this, let me know, b/c I realy wonder why she would NOT be weareing her ring! I onley want the best for IVANKA — that is why I wish Jared had a brother or a relative with MONEY that I can marry and have children with! FOOEY!

Buy a fabulous wedding dress :)

For cleaning out my closet, I tried Like Twice dot com and sent them a bunch of old Ann Taylor blazers that no longer fit and I was just going to donate to Goodwill. I ended up getting about $4 each. Not a ton of money, but more than I would have gotten just giving them away, and I had no luck selling them on eBay (where my actual profit wouldn’t have been much more, plus all the hassle that goes with it). With Like Twice you just send it in with a free label, they tell you how much they’ll give you for the lot. If you don’t like their offer, you can get it back for $5 shipping. I’m going to send in a second pouch this week!
lucy stone
I did this too…I send in some old Ann Taylor and Talbots blouses and got $25 for the bag, which is $25 more than I would have if I gave them to Goodwill or St. Vinny’s. I’m going to keep using this too, since I have loads to get rid of.
YouSaucyMinx
You also may want to check if there is a Clothing Mentor in your area. They are a grown-up Platos Closet, where you take in your clothes, they sort through them, and give you a flat offer for what you bring in (rather than traditional consignment where you get a portion when the item sells).
I’ve gotten more money on eBay, but on lesser value items it’s just easier/faster to sell at Clothing Mentor than handle listings/shipping on eBay.
phx
OMG, thank you for this. I had never heard about them, but have so much that I hate to donate to Goodwill and have no time to list on ebay. Good Karma and high selling prices coming your way! :)
Apples
Thanks for the tip, didn’t know about this company! I would be happy to list you for referral credit if you’d like.
Parfait
Oh hey, this is timely. I have some nicer things that I was hesitating about giving to goodwill.
Anon
List one item of clothing on eBay every day until I can honestly say that I like and wear everything in my closet. Donate what does not sell. No shopping unless replacing a worn-out item.
Calico
Yes! My goal is to finally try eBay this year to sell some nice clothes I no longer wear.
Wanderlust
Does eBay work? I haven’t sold anything on there in years… but will people really buy my old clothes posted with clear but not professional photos?
BB
Also interested in this! I have a Kate Spade satchel that’s in perfect (only used twice) condition, but from about 5 years ago. Was honestly going to donate it, but wouldn’t mind getting like $100 for it if possible. I think it was originally ~$500.
Tradesy
What a coincidence! See my comment below
Tradesy
I had no luck selling a couple of Kate Spade bags on Ebay, but sold them both within a month on Tradesy. They do take a percentage of your sale (I think it may be around 9%) but send you a prepaid shipping kit, so you don’t have to worry about that. They take a much smaller percentage from what I’ve seen with consignment stores and other sites like shop-hers.
yousaucyminx
Yup! I actually resell clothes I find at thrift shops. My pictures aren’t professional–just clear photos of the item on a hanger-and I make really decent money-like 1500 a month in profit.
I sell brands like Banana Republic, White House Black Market, JCrew.
anon a mouse
If you list on ebay, make sure to list measurements! Sizes aren’t helpful if someone isn’t that familiar with a brand (and even within brands it can be inconsistent).
Anonymous
I don’t like eBay. I find buyers so needy, constantly sending questions. And what you can actually get is minimal…when you calculate the percentage that ebay takes out, the cost to ship it, including packing materials, and the time and effort to go to the post office, it’s just not worth it. Try Like Twice like I referenced above! So simple.
Anon
I’ve had very good experiences selling on ebay. I’m estimating it takes me less than 5 minutes to list an item (including photographing, measuring, writing description) and i dont tend to get many questions. I’ve unloaded a lot of gently worn items from brands like JCrew, Banana, Tory Burch, etc for good prices.
Shopaholic
My goal is to buy clothes for my body/lifestyle. I really need to stop buying things in my old size because I haven’t been that size in about a year and a half and having so many clothes that are too small is not good for my well being.
Also try fitting into the clothes I already own but that seems to involve lots of early mornings at the gym and drinking less wine which makes me sad.
2 Cents
Buying a few things in the size you currently are will do so much good for your self-esteem, even if you are a size you currently don’t like. Trust me. I’m someone who’s been up and down the scale (though mostly up) and there’s nothing more depressing than looking in your closet everyday, knowing everything you’re about to put on doesn’t fit and makes you feel uncomfortable.
Jennifer
Take better care of my clothes. I have a bad habit of accumulating a pile on top of my dresser of clothes I wore once or twice that are still good for another wear, but then everything gets wrinkled and I have to wash/dry clean it anyway. I also gamble a lot with using the gentle cycle for dry-clean clothes, which saves me money in the short term but has led to wrinkly or pilled fabrics over time.
Cat
oh, I have a tip for this one – you need to establish a system for what you do with the worn-but-not-dirty clothes so that there’s a place to keep them!
I had this problem because I would want to let tops air out for a day or two after wearing but before putting away. So, I always had sweaters draped around my bedroom. Solved the problem by keeping two nice wooden hangers on my closet door handle – so that every top I wear can hang “out” for two days before I put it back in the appropriate area of my closet or dresser, but once both hangers are full, I have to put away the oldest item before I take off the next thing I want to re-wear.
Must be Tuesday
I have a similar process. I have hooks inside my closet door for this. I don’t have a limit to the number of hangers, but once I get to 5 or 6, it starts to get crowded, so that’s usually when I’ll put things away if I don’t get to it before accumulating that much.
Amy H.
I do this with tops and sweaters too — and I hang work trousers upside down over the living room steam radiator, which steams out the wrinkles and leaves them nicer than the dry cleaner, honestly. I do dry-clean them every few wears.
Wildkitten
No shopping. Lose weight. Fit into old clothes.
Put effort into looking more professional – more suits/blazers less ponte/sweaters.

As a mid-30’s mother of three who doesn’t keep close track of the fashion world, my fashion resolutions in the past few years have been to incorporate 1-2 style trends to update my look. For 2015, it’s probably ankle boots (I know, soooo cutting edge) and layering necklaces.
Seriously, though, those are still trends, right?
EK
Ankle boots, yes. Layering necklaces, not sure.
A
Right now, I’m trying to stop spending so much and make do with what I have. Not just with clothes, but with cosmetics and personal care items like lotion and body wash – I have a major addiction to Bath and Body Works. It’s not exactly a shopping moratorium, but I’m really going to focus on only buying things I actually need, which isn’t much. The real goal here is to hack away at my credit card balance, which isn’t out of control per se but is higher than I’d like it to be. Hopefully by the time I’ve whittled it down to almost nothing, I’ll have established good spending habits that last.
I guess a closet purge is long overdue. I have so many things I’ve been meaning to donate, and a few things I’d like to take to H&M to have recycled (and I’ll use the coupon to get something, yes, but it’ll be something practical), and some things I’d like to have altered, and some things I don’t wear anymore and am actually not sure what to do with them. Might also help to get some space bags and put a bunch of things in storage. My drawers and closet are all so cramped, but I know there’s a lot of clothing that doesn’t need to be there.
CPA Lady
I got the Marie Kondo book about tidying, and did a MASSIVE closet purge this weekend. Right now I’m pretty sure that everything left in my closet and dresser brings me joy, so my goal as related to clothes, is to only have clothes that bring me joy. Not buy just anything because it’s a good deal. Or if I wear something I kept and realize it doesn’t bring me joy, let go of it right away.
Wildkitten
I got rid of so much stuff with that book! And I keep finding more things to jettison as I go.
BB
I don’t even have the book, but read a story on her in NYT where they talked about organizing drawers by rolling clothes up and putting them upright. Changed. my. life! I fit so much more clothing into drawers + they don’t wrinkle as easily + I can see everything and end up wearing everything more!
CKB
I have to figure out how my former work style in a business casual office translates to my new job in a casual office. And that may require getting rid of some clothes.
Carrie...
Optimize my hairstyle. That should be the one fashion accessory that looks good, current and is ideally manageable for me.
So for me that means…
Get on a regular haircut schedule.
Decide if highlights are for me, to help my transition into more and more grey hair.
Learn how to (quickly) style my bob-ish haircut so that I look more put together. This is the hardest.
KittyKat
I have a lot of very fine hair and I can flat iron my bob in 5 minutes flat, the only *secret* to it is my good straightener.
Carrie...
Interesting…. I have a curling iron, but not a straightener. Also with a lot of very fine hair. You don’t feel like you are all head, no hair when it is very straight/flat?
KittyKat
If you dry your hair upside down or use some sort of volumizing mouse you should be fine. I tend to start straightening about 2 inches down, not right at the root, to maintain volume
EK
Yes, I second the recommendation for a flat iron. I have very thick hair a couple inches past my shoulders and it only takes me like fifteen minutes altogether. I blow dry my hair upside down and then apply my make up (five minutes) to let my hair settle, brush it and then flat iron the ends that have flipped out. I now have grown up hair which I didn’t think was possible.
RR
I don’t consider it a resolution, but I’m doing a shopping moratorium through June, with the exception of spending gift cards I already have. I may allow exceptions for real necessary purchases, but I’m not sure what that would be. I know I need a new pair of black flats, but I can probably cover that with the $150 in Nordstrom gift cards. So we will see. I’m going to try to be creative and avoid “necessities.”
It’s not a money thing or even totally a space thing, although saving money and having less is always good. I’m just not really happy with my reasons for shopping lately. I think I need to find other ways to make myself feel good.
Pretty Primadonna
I’m also doing a shopping moratorium through June with hopes of using the saved money to decrease credit card debt and of forming better spending habits in general (i.e. stop being an emotional shopper). Also, I already have so. many. clothes. that I need to purge my overstuffed closet.
Once the moratorium has concluded, I resolve to buy more suiting separates and blazers for work.
BrokeBusinessUndergradStudent
I have a few for this year
1. Shop my Closet! As a fully broke college student with travel plans – I’m really severely limiting my ‘fashion’ clothing choices. I am buying interview and business casual & networking clothes but otherwise I’m good for the first 5 months of the year. I plan to go abroad next semester, so shopping spree..!
2. Form a habit of going to the dry cleaners and tailors. I have a lot of good shoes and clothing that just ‘broke’ in a little but significant way (i can’t wear these items) that i have stopped wearing. Super important for my suiting and coats as well
3. ‘Invest’ in some workout clothing – I’ve been wearing the exact same outfit for so long and its getting a bit ridiculous.
Minor Question for y’all: I am looking for a necklace (preferrably gold) to round out my business casual outfits and short of stores like H&M and Zara – I’m not sure where to look. Budget < $100.
Bonnie
Something like this would be versatile: http://www.bluenile.com/tri-color-pendant-gold-vermeil_43228?elem=img&track=product
Idea
Cap Hill Style does a lot of jewelry. I’d look at/follow some of her suggestions.
Cdn Acct
I got this one for my sister for Christmas and she really liked it, from the Bay and it’s from Nine West. In general, I’d check out mid-range department stores.
Idea
I am looking to buy a new dresser for me. My current one is tall and inherited from grandparents who passed away in the ’70s. I’d rather have a wide, long one, hopefully newer than 1950s style, maybe even sort-of modern.
This, along with cleaning out my closet (cue Eminem song in my head) will help.
I am currently pregnant and am oddly accepting about my body (fat and pregnant! yay!), depressed (fat AND pregnant?! Ugh!) and optimistic (let’s get moving ASAP to get my body back to, ahem, MY body!). I’d like to be more accepting and more optimistic about my body, and I do think these “fashion resolutions” will help with that. Get organized, get rid of physical clutter, then focus on baby & other kinds of clutter…
mascot
Having a child didn’t do my body many favors, but it really helped my self-confidence. Part of it was learning to trust my body to do what it needs to do and know that it is strong enough to carry a child (both internally and externally). It was also a bit of an equalizer. I was lucky enough to get my stretch marks during puberty and cellulite is part of my package. I was always really sensitive that I didn’t look as good as my friends, regardless of my size. But, when I look around the pool now at all the other moms, everyone has their marks and scars. Before I worked out to be a size x. Now I work out for stress relief, to set a good example for my child, and to ensure that I can be around to chase after him for a long time to come. I hope you find the same positive experience.
Idea
Very inspiring and motivating, thank you! Yes – I’ve embraced “be healthy” as a mantra, rather than “be within this weight” – a big difference!
hoola hoopa
Haha, I felt the same way, mascot! I also received stretchmarks in puberty and wasn’t built like an athleta model, so I never felt like super cute high schooler or s*xy college coed – but once I had my first I felt like I was hot for a mom ;) It was a totally achievable mental bar for once.
And instead of stressing over how I compared to other young women in a bikini, I feel awesome because I’m in the pool playing with my kids instead of hiding in a cover up on the deck. And maybe those snow pants don’t quite slide over my hips any more, but I’m happy to be able to pull the kids up the sledding hill one more time.
Amy H.
1. Get my hair cut in an actual style, in an actual salon (vs. Supercuts!).
2. Finally order new eyeglasses — I’ve had the ones I’m wearing now for about three years too long . . . .
Viv
I’m not buying anything new (some exceptions) and only buying second hand or refashioning what I already own. I’m also going to work towards decluttering my closet and paring down, and selling some things.
Great Lawyer
I am going to continue to tell stores that they should carry plus sizes.

– Purge closet of all the stuff that doesn’t fit and/or I just don’t wear
– Especially shoes that are worn out but that I haven’t found a good replacement for yet
– Be more mindful about buying stuff just because it’s on sale or whatever
– New glasses and haircut
– And I sure hope I get these braces off soon!
