    1. Didn’t have as much time for site-seeing as I hoped (had to do rehearsal dinner, wedding, reception, then dinner party sunday with an old friend, and we left pretty early on sunday), but I was intrigued by the city. We went to Mark’s (the place in the church – thanks for the tip!) for dinner. It was very good and the neighborhood looked interesting. We had lunch at the original Ninfa’s (on Navigation) and it was delicious. We went to the Menill (is that right?) Collection, saw the Byzantine icons, Rothko chapel, and the art museum. I have to say, the Rothkos didn’t do much for me and having been to several Greek and Russian orthodox churches, I’ve seen icons before too.

Houston is a very confusing place, I never did get the hang of the highway system. I did like all the different architectural styles for the houses, that was sort of fun to see. I’m sad we didn’t have a chance to go to the Galleria, even though we stayed right nearby. I think I’d like walking around some of the neighborhoods, too, like around Rice and around the museum.

I think I mentioned that my BF does some work with NASA and I am seriously considering going back with him if my schedule permits, because I would like to see more of Houston.

  1. Oh, also, has anyone done the Jacob’s Ladder thing that they show on Biggest Loser all the time? My gym just got one, and boy is it hard! I was amazed. It is BY FAR the best workout at the gym. I’m running a half marathon soon and couldn’t even make it 10 minutes on the Ladder.

    1. Looks like work! I, *finally*, decided to work out during the Biggest Loser (definitely my one guilty pleasure-reality show). It makes the extended commercials bearable because I don’t need to devote my full attention. It’s getting to the point where the contestants are starting to get in *my* weight range, which always motivates me to work a little harder…

      1. Wow! It’s awesome you’re doing one so soon after the bambino! Mine is in a couple of weeks. It’s my first one, but I really want to keep doing them. OCD me needs a goal and a schedule to really stick to doing cardio. I especially want to keep doing them after I have a baby, so you’re good motivation. :)

        1. Yes! I’m like you. I need the motivation to keep the training up. I’ve done 2 halfs and one full, all before both my kids. (And it’s been over a year since baby girl, plenty of time to train!) Let me know how you do!

    2. Is it the same Jacob’s Ladder/rope ladder used to climb aboard a ship? I had to do that for an exercise I was supporting a few years ago. Our little boat was transferring us to an aircraft carrier, we were in sea state 4/5 and we pulled up alongside the ship and out comes the Jacob’s Ladder – WHAT?! I took a deep breath and scurried up it. It was completely exhilarating.

  2. Kat, you should do an updated Corporette’s Guide to Dating! The one above is three years old .. time for a refresh. I bet it would drive a lively discussion. :)

  3. Holy crud I do not feel good today. Killer headache, stomach uneasy, etc… I just started working for a government agency though and am not allowed to use sick leave for 4 more months. My boss is pretty cool so if I really needed to I’m sure she would let me go, but right now I’m just trying to stick it out and hope I feel better soon.

Hiding in my office with the lights off…

    1. Feel better! Being sick at the office sucks. This sounds silly but don’t forget to drink water!

      1. Thanks, I actually think drinking water is helping. It’s weird when I’m sick I don’t want straight water, I want to put something in it or just drink soda, but water really is the healthiest!

    2. If you need an excuse to get sent home, my city has a norovirus outbreak. Several law firms and police departments have been knocked out by people coming to work with a little stomach ache and then the whole place got the virus. My friend works for one such police department and they had to take mutual aid from state and county b/c so many officers were out ill.

      Feel better!

      1. Holy cow! I heard of a school in SF that had to close down because of that but I hadn’t heard of police departments and law firms!

It’s definitely not THAT bad :-D I just wish I were curled up under the covers with my kittens sleeping away the day instead of trying to put on a brave front (in person, clearly not on here!). My coworker did come in and ask if I wanted to have my picture taken today for the website. I declined that so fast his head spun!

    3. Within a month of starting at a gov’t agency I had to take almost a full two and a half weeks off for full blown mono (first grown up job…god i was so sick, and I worked for almost a week with 104 fevers before I finally gave up). My boss basically let me take the time off and then for the first few months I was there, I had to take sick leave every two weeks as I accrued it until I accounted for the time, it wasn’t ideal, but it worked. If you’re really sick, talk to them

Also — what you described sounds like a migraine — fyi. If you’ve never had one before, I’d take two extra strength excedrin, two benedryl, and sleep and see if you feel better as soon as you can.

    4. I get migraines and this sounds like one. If you still have it, go to the pharmacy and take exedrin migraine (note, it’s super power tylenol and caffeine so look at the label to familiarize yourself). The caffeine in the exedrin restricts your blood vessels (or something like that). Water is your bff. Turning off your lights is good and filtering or blocking natural light/glare is good too. If you can, go to your car for 15 minutes and just shut your eyes. Since you have started a new job, it could have been stress induced so go home, take a long shower or bath and just take care of yourself. Get a good night’s rest if you can. Tomorrow, water water water water water.

The good news is that it’s almost 4, which means COB is near!

  4. Question for the hive – how do you all deal with making mistakes at work? I’m basically as Jr. as they come, in an administrative position, and i generally consider myself to be a good worker and not make a ton of mistakes. When I do, though, based on the nature of my position, it travels up the chain quickly and in a serious way – the way high ups find out about it. So basically, my name only gets attached to the bad stuff – if i do a good job, i fly under the radar, never getting any real credit for my good work. I’m fine with that, as I understand that this is about being a grown up – you don’t get a gold star for every little thing. But i really beat myself up over messing up, to the point where i am losing sleep, picking fights with family and friends, etc. It’s never been a big enough deal that it wasn’t fix-able, more just makes me (and the department) look stupid. I don’t even like my job, and it’s not what i see myself doing for more than a year or so, until something better comes along. Advice for not beating yourself up? Ugh, can one of you wonderful corporette-rs come work in my office now?

    1. Ditto what Maine Associate said. Especially don’t blame the workload or “someone said blah blah blah.” It doesn’t sound like you do that at all, but that’s the kind of thing that drives me bonkers as well.

All I can say about not beating yourself up is if you start, think about your plan for the error to not happen again, take a deep breath, remind yourself that it’s okay if errors come to mind because that means they won’t happen again, take another deep breath and then move on and deliberately think about something else, something good or at least interesting.

  5. I don’t have any advice regarding not beating yourself up, but I can share what I wish my staff did when they made a mistake. Admit to the mistake, apologize and tell me what the plan is so it does not happen again. I will move on and will appreciate your approach-everyone makes mistakes, even me. What makes me bonkers is hearing excuses, that it is not your fault (esp. when it is clearly your fault) or throwing someone else under the bus for your error. When my staff refuses to accept responsibility for their mistake, I think less of them and begin to doubt their work.

  6. Hi! My nickname is Kat too. I’m a new fan of the site. I’m a first year lawyer in LA. I am on a super tight budget bc of school loans. I can’t always buy a complete suit set and I usually don’t like the bottoms. I find they go too high (at the waist). I’m used to pant/skirts that hang lower on the hips. Could you please create a post about mixing and matching suit tops and bottoms? Thanks!
