2019 was a great year for suits for women — these are some of my favorites from our regular feature, “Suit of the Week,” which, as we note each week, seeks to find “the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.”
If you’re on the hunt for basic suiting, note that we did some major updates to our roundups of interview suits for women, including doing roundups for budget-friendly interview suits, as well as regular, petite, and plus size suits.
Of course, don’t forget to check out The Corporette Guide to Basic Women’s Suiting (recently updated!).
Anything marked with an asterisk is still in stock — and please feel free to use this post as an open thread! (If it isn't clear, you have to click the hyperlinks below the picture to see the original post on the suit.)

Kat, I love the review of the dress suits and especially going back for years and years. It just goe’s to show us that classic cuts NEVER go out of style. I need to remember that going forward, as I am now not the young ingeneu I once was, and now must start to dress accordingly. I kind of figured this out the other night, when I went to the Matzo Ball on the west side, where my sequined gown did not get the reception I expected, with many guys stareing at me and a few just coming up to give me a squeeze. I told one that I was NOT an avocado and bruise easily, and he said “great! how about coming back to my apartement?” I said you have GOT to be kidding — he was like a younger version of Frank, with not much hair on the top of his head, and I would guess to much everywhere else! He also had a beer gut, Myrna told me, b/c she has seen him around before, but could not place him.
I hope the HIVE had a great holiday, and I look forward to 2020. Kat, you and your family and the Corporetes should too!
Today is my last day in the office b/c I will have gotten all of my billing done by the end of the day. I barley made my 7200 hours, and I am the only one here, so I can take a long lunch and walk up to Nordstrom’s b/c I think all the ice has melted from last week when all the streets over there were closed! I went over but decided NOT to buy anything. FOOEY!
Good morning. Am I the only one at work today?
You are not alone – but I am here. Only 4 people on a floor that holds 50.
I went in yesterday, but decided to work from home today since there were only about 8 people out of a floor of over 100 yesterday.
You would think today would be a good time to catch up on my expense reports. I have yet to convince myself that is the case.
You would think today would be a good time to catch up on a lot of things but I am just feeling unproductive!
So many productive things that could be done today. I saw the writing on the wall of getting nothing done and turned a CLE that I’ve been meaning to watch. Productively unproductive.
I am working, but from home today. I have a plumber and an appliance repairman coming today!
What I wouldn’t give to work at a company with a holiday shutdown period…
+1. DH and I are convinced that we’d lose zero to minimal productivity if everything except grocery stores were closed for two weeks at the end of the year.
I got spoiled so, so quickly when I got a job that this. The only downside is that my dog is going to be a complete and total brat when I have to go back to work.
I have a job with a two week paid holiday shutdown and I don’t think I will ever be able to leave it, no matter how bad certain elements of it are (cough, salary, cough…we basically never get raises).
Working from home here. One of my friends works for a company that just closes for the last two weeks of the year so everyone gets paid time off (tech company) and I am so jealous.
At home. Email and phone still blissfully quiet. I want to take the afternoon off but am covering in case of emergencies.
Here as well! Was here all week, except for Wednesday
I worked Monday, yesterday, and today, and we’ve surprisingly been slightly busier than last week.
I am at work!
I’m in the office! We’re actually shut down for two weeks over the holidays but this is a busy time of year for my particular role, so I’m here 10:30 – 2:30 catching up and getting organized. I’ll probably be back for a bit next Friday, too.
This is nerdy but I actually love the peace that comes with popping into the office this time of year. I can work on work stuff but also catch up on personal tasks that my kids make it impossible to get to…
I’m at the office but it’s really quiet. Wish I were home.
Same! But I’m literally in jogging pants and uggs. I will thinking of all you ladies that gave to go in to the office today.
Shopping help anyone? I’m trying to decide between the Houston and Clarkson blazers at OfMercer. I’m ~5′ 2″, hourglassy and pretty athletic and work in a business casual workplace if that’s helpful. And I’d probably be looking at like a green or dark red color. Which, if either of these would you get?

Burgundy. The green buttons up too high and at a weird point.
As a counterpoint, I think that Clarkson would be too long on someone who is 5-2 (I’m 5-4, but with a really short torso / high waist). And I don’t think that people actually button jackets (perhaps unless standing up to argue in court), so if you sit 90% of the time, I don’t think that the fasteners matter really.
What do the rest of your favorite jackets look like (open? shorter? longer?)? I just cannot make longer jackets work on my frame, but some people really like/need them. What sits on the hanger in your closet vs being a regular workhorse?
I like the Houston because it seems more fitted.
Neither. The model is 5’9 – I don’t think the proportions of either would be better on someone 5’2. I like the Clarkson better but it might be oddly 90’s loooooooooong jacket on the OP.
The long jacket is back. You’re just not used to it yet.
As a tall, I’m happy about it.
The long jacket is more popular but on a small petite frame, none of the proportions would work. Everything would be too long (sleeves, placement of pockets, buttons, sleeve holes, etc) and would look like playing dress up. A petite “long jacket” could work.
Right. Lots of things that are stylish on someone of even average height make me (5’2″, 110 lbs) look like I’m playing dress up.
Conversely, as the tall who posted above, the shrunken blazer trend made it look like I couldn’t find anything in my size. I felt like the hulk.
yeah, I understand it’s a look, but needs to be done intentionally — not “I bought a blazer that’s meant to be worn by someone 7 inches taller.”
Thanks for the help. I have like 100 in store credit that I’d like to use- any other items that may be better? I’m ok going over the 100 is to get an actually nice item.
I know that the models on the site are 5-10, but IRL my OM dress fits me and perhaps runs a bit shorter than I’d have expected and I’m only 5-4. I think that the dresses are lovely and would try one of those that is hour-glass friendly (I’m a pear). I have a wool one that is lined, but the travel-friendly ones would be what I try next (am in need of a wardrobe refresh as I am a size bigger than some of my clothes at the moment . . .).
I’m 5’2 and Victoria Beard’s jackets work the best for me. They have 15% off sale now, so this jacket will cost somewhat comparable to ofmercer. https://veronicabeard.com/products/rae-dickey-jacket?variant=27559048413284
I can vouch for quality and fitting. Also they have plenty of dickeys if you’re into it
How am I just now discovering this website?! How fun! I love a good pant suit. Anyone else find that Ann Taylor suits fit the best? I’m pretty average body type. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas!
